Red Sox News & Notes – 5/11

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Josh Beckett wipes his head in the dugout after being taken out in the third inning of a baseball game against the Cleveland Indians in Boston, Thursday, May 10, 2012.

The Boston Red Sox have now played nine games in the month of May. Want to take a guess as to how many of those they have won?

If you guessed one, you’d be correct. That win came four days ago when they opened up the series with the Kansas City Royals. That win also snapped a five-game losing streak at the time.

So with last night’s 8-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians, the new losing streak stands at three games and their record at 12-19. It was just at .500 (11-11) 10 days ago.

Josh Beckett made his return to the Red Sox rotation last night and when was all said and done, he was booed off the mound as he stunk worse than a pile of manure. And we all know how bad that stinks.

Beckett’s pitches were flat, which may have been a sign of the long layoff he had after missing his last start with lat soreness. Or it could have been that he’s still hurt. But Beckett did say after the game that there was no residual soreness from the injury and that he stunk last night.

While it was nice to see Beckett own up to the putrid smell of his outing, he was pretty defiant about the questions being asked about his golfing outing. Honestly, there’s no point in me getting into that because in ways I agree with what he said and in others I don’t. I’d rather focus on his effort.

Beckett wasn’t all that good in his first start of the season with Jarrod Saltalamacchia behind the plate. Since then, he’s had Kelly Shoppach with him. He pitched pretty well his first time out with Shop and they’ve been together ever since. After last night’s debacle, I don’t think it really matters whether or not Beckett is more comfortable with Shop behind the plate. He hasn’t really done any better overall with him.

Beckett is the elder statesman of this Red Sox rotation and is supposed to lead by example. We all know how fiery he can be as he was towards the media last night. He was part of the Red Sox trio in the stories from last season and now you have this golf outing while supposedly hurt.

We all thought maybe it was the influence of John Lackey on the others but it’s obvious now that Beckett may have been the ring leader. Either way, that’s not good for the team at all.

It really is starting to appear that this team has no chemistry whatsoever. And folks that’s not good at all.

Fenway Park is supposed to give the Red Sox a huge advantage over other teams. Judging by the 4-11 mark there, it’s obvious there is no advantage.

This team really needs to be shaken up.

Whether it being trading someone, firing Bobby Valentine or some coaches, remains to be seen. But something has to be done and quickly before this entire season gets out of hand and we are toiling in mediocrity.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

First-rounder McIlrath Happy to Get into the Mix with Whale

By Bob Crawford

Six-foot-five, 215-pound defenseman Dylan McIlrath, the tenth overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft by the New York Rangers, wasn’t sure what kind of opportunity he would get when he joined the Connecticut Whale April 30 from his Junior Hockey team, the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League.  The Whale were coming off of a three-game sweep of the Northeast Division-champion Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the opening round, a series in which the Whale had allowed a total of three goals in the three games.

CT Whale“I didn’t know what to expect coming in,” McIlrath said after a recent Whale practice.  “This team was doing well, firing on all cylinders, sweeping Bridgeport.  They had a good thing going, then I was fortunate to hop in the lineup and I feel really comfortable hopping in.  I think this time around I’m just trying to go in with an open mind and just go play hockey and not think too much.”

This year’s stint is not McIlrath’s first kick at the pro hockey can.  He also came to the Whale last year at the end of his WHL season, and got into Connecticut’s last two regular-season games.  That experience, according to McIlrath, was good preparation for his first career pro playoff action this year.

“Absolutely, I think just getting familiar with the city, with the coaching staff, sleeping arrangements, it’s all familiar this time around,” the Winnipeg native said, “and it makes it a lot easier just coming to the rink every day, knowing the guys and just kind of feeling comfortable.”

A big part of that comfort zone has been the fact that, during the majority of his shifts in his first three playoff games in a Whale uniform, the 20-year-old McIlrath has been paired with 15th-year pro Wade Redden, the Whale captain and a veteran of nearly 1,000 NHL games.

To continue reading, please click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

“It’s great, not only on the ice but off the ice,” said McIlrath of the opportunity to play with Redden.  “After we come off from a shift, say one of us does something a little wrong, we can just talk it out.  And he’s just a calming presence, like I’ve said before, and definitely appreciate all he’s done for me.”

After he sat out his first game on the Whale roster, Connecticut’s 3-2 overtime win at Norfolk in Game One, McIlrath’s chance to get into the lineup came because of an injury to another experienced Whale blueliner, Brendan Bell.  The offensive-minded, puck-moving Bell plays almost a completely different style than McIlrath, a bruising, physical sort, but McIlrath hopes that his game provides an element that is key to having a chance to defeat the regular season league-champion Admirals.

“I definitely didn’t try to come in and replace Brendan Bell, I can’t do that,” McIlrath said.  “I just tried to play my game, just a physical, hard-nosed game, and it seems to be working out for me so far.  Hopefully I just can keep playing like I have been.

“I think I bring a different element and it’s a good element to bring, just to stop the rush.  My game isn’t really puck moving, it’s more just defending the rush and just being a big-body presence.  I’m going to do everything I can to help the team.”

One additional way in which McIlrath can help is by adding some extra physicality and “jam” to the Whale team, and by using the noteworthy fistic skills he has developed in the WHL  to help keep Whale opponents honest.  An example of that came in Game Four at the XL Center, when McIlrath put an exclamation point on a series-tying, 4-1 Whale win by dropping the gloves with Norfolk defenseman Scott Jackson, after he had laid a high hit on Ryan Bourque.

“It’s nice when you can stick up for a teammate, and definitely after the game everyone gave me high-fives and they were all pretty pumped for me,” McIlrath said of the scrap with Jackson.  “It’s pretty rewarding that you can stick up for a teammate and everyone has your back.”

McIlrath also jumped on to the Whale roster at the perfect time to do some bonding with his new AHL teammates, as the nearly nine-hour bus ride from Hartford to Norfolk is the Whale’s longest bus trip of the year, and they have had to do it twice in this series.  The Whale had a special bus, equipped with sleeping bunks, for both journeys, but for a guy as big as McIlrath, it’s still a long time to be cramped inside the “iron lung”.

“It’s a little tough, especially being rookies, we all have to huddle up together it seems,” he laughed.  “You make it work, and I’m used to those long bus trips, coming from out west.  So it’s not too bad.

“Out in the prairies (in the WHL) there’s a lot of distance between teams.  I definitely got used to it and it’s not that bad any more.”

Since the excitement of being a top ten pick by an Original Six organization two summers ago, McIlrath has had two more solid WHL seasons with the Warriors, plus a couple of cups of coffee in the AHL.  He is now about to reach another exciting threshold in his career, as, having turned 20 in April, he is old enough to leave the Junior ranks behind and play full-time in the AHL next year, if, of course, he does not hit it big and grab a spot with the parent club.

“Definitely my number-one goal is obviously to make the Rangers,” McIlrath said, “but that being said, if I come back here (to the Whale), I’ll definitely keep an open mind, and try to be a sponge and learn from guys like Wade Redden and older, veteran guys, and just kind of know the ropes and how it is to be a pro.  I’ve enjoyed my time here so far, and I’m definitely going to take as much out of it as I can to get ready.”

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/10

Derek Lowe (L), Josh Beckett (R)

After losing two-of-three against the Kansas City Royals, the Boston Red Sox return home to the not-so friendly confines of Historic Fenway Park for a six-game homestand. They’ll begin tonight with the first game of a four-game set against the AL Central leading Cleveland Indians.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Indians television market, you can catch the game on SportsTime Ohio (STO). And if you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as the MLB Network will coverage of the game outside of the Red Sox and Indians television markets. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

After allegedly going golfing with the sore lat that caused him to miss his last start, Josh Beckett returns to the hill to make his sixth start of 2012. In his previous five starts, Beckett is 2-3 with a 4.45 ERA. He made three starts against the Indians in 2011 and was 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA (6 ER/17.2 IP).  Beckett’s made 10 career starts and is 4-5 with a 4.84 ERA.

Former Red Sox starter and closer Derek Lowe gets the ball for the Windians tonight in his seventh start of the season. In his previous six starts, Lowe is 4-1 with a 2.39 ERA. Lowe has only faced the Red Sox once in his career and that came in 2009 when he was a member of the Atlanta Braves. In that start at the Fens, he took the loss after allowing three runs in 6.1 innings. He has made 194 career appearances (53 starts) at Fenway going 42-24 with a 3.13 and 39 saves.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/10

Alex Gordon #4 of the Kansas City Royals makes a sliding catch during the 9th inning of the game against the Boston Red Sox on May 9, 2012 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

On paper, this was supposed to be a relatively easy stretch of nine games for the Boston Red Sox. They had three games each with the Oakland A’s, Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals.

Their record in those nine games was 2-7.

The Royals had been struggling at home having won their first two games of the season there in their previous series against the New York Yankees. And after the Red Sox came to town, they had two more wins.

A majority of baseball games are won on pitching and defense. Last night the Royals won the game on their defense while the Red Sox lost it on defense.

Sox starter Jon Lester was done in by his defense in the 1st inning when Marlon Byrd misplayed a line drive that allowed a run to score. Then Cody Ross made a catch in left and as he went to brace himself, the ball popped out of his glove and off the wall where he caught it again. The inning should have been over but the umpire ruled no catch and that allowed two more Royals to score.

In the 9th, the Royals defense saved the day.

With runners on second and third, Ryan Sweeney hit a liner to left that Alex Gordon made a sliding catch on. He quickly got up and threw the ball in preventing Darnell McDonald from tagging up and scoring the tying run. Had DMac tried to score, he probably would have been out by at least 45 feet. Royals closer Jonathan Broxton then got former Royals SS Mike Aviles to ground out to end the game.

After consistently being among the leaders in strikeouts, Lester’s ability to finish off hitters just isn’t there right now. He ended up with just three strikeouts on the night.

With the exception of a bad pitch by Matt Albers on Tuesday night, the Red Sox bullpen has been outstanding. That continued last night when Clayton Mortensen scattered three hits over the final three innings striking out one along the way.

Offensively, Aviles did lead the way for the visiting nine with a two-hit effort. Adrian Gonzalez ended up going 1-for-4 but his one hit was huge. It was his three-run double in the 3rd inning that tied the game up.

The Red Sox did play last night’s game with a heavy heart as they lost a member of their family.

Fenway Park public address announcer Carl Beane passed away after suffering a heart attack while driving on Wednesday afternoon. It’ll never be the same going to a game at the Fens.

Things won’t be an easier for the Red Sox this weekend. The Cleveland Indians are playing some good baseball right now and hold the lead in the AL Central. They’ll send former Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe to the mound. The Red Sox will counter with Josh Beckett, who will probably have to answer a thousand questions on whether he went golfing before missing his last start after the game.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
