Video: Jerry Remy Is a Class Act

During last night’s the Boston Red Sox win over the Cleveland Indians, the NESN cameras panned over to a family who was holding up a sign that said “Hi Don & Jerry, I am 6 today and this is my first time to Fenway Park. Jerry buy us a hot dog. Don how about a shark bite.”

An inning or so later, NESN Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy made it happen by having some hot dogs delivered to the family.

Sunday Red Sox Delight – 5/13

Justin Masterson (L), Daniel Bard (R)

After winning 4-1 last night, the Boston Red Sox look to avoid a split of their four-game set with the Cleveland Indians this afternoon at Historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Indians television market, you can catch the game on SportsTime Ohio (STO). If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Daniel Bard makes his seventh appearance (sixth start) of 2012 for the Red Sox. In his previous six appearances (five starts), Bard is 2-4 with a 4.83 ERA. He made four appearances against the Indians in 2011 going 0-3 with a 16.88 ERA (5 ER/2.2 IP). Bard has made 11 career appearances against the Tribe and is 0-4 with an 8.64 ERA (8 ER/8.1 IP).

Former Red Sox pitcher Justin Masterson makes his 8th start of 2012. In his previous seven starts, Masterson is 1-2 with a 4.89 ERA. He made two starts against his former club in 2011 going 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA (5 ER/13.2 IP). Masterson has made four career starts and has had some good success as he is 3-0 with a 1.95 ERA (6 ER/27.2 IP). He’s made 38 career appearances (10 starts) at the Fens and is 10-2 with a 3.57 ERA.

Norfolk Admirals 2, Connecticut Whale 1 (OT)

Norfolk, VA, May 11, 2012 – Richard Panik’s goal at 13:01 of overtime ended the Connecticut Whale’s season Friday night at Scope Arena, giving the Norfolk Admirals a 2-1 win in Game Six of the Eastern Conference Semifinal series between the two teams, and a four-games-to-two triumph in the best-of-seven set.

CT WhalePanik took a pass from Alex Killorn and got a step on Whale defenseman Brendan Bell, then made a move to the forehand to put the puck past Connecticut goaltender Cam Talbot, who made 44 saves in the game, including a combined 32 in the third period and overtime.

The Whale nearly found themselves behind just 41 seconds into the game, but an apparent goal by Norfolk’s Alexandre Picard was disallowed when it was ruled that he knocked the puck into the net with a high stick.

The Whale controlled play thereafter, but were frustrated by Admiral netminder Jaroslav Janus (30 saves) until the 14:49 mark, when Connecticut got a goal as a result of a fortunate bounce.  Janus stopped a shot by Casey Wellman but could not control the rebound, and Norfolk forward Pierre-Cedric Labrie inadvertently knocked it into the net with his skate.  Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, who got the last touch on the puck, was credited with the goal.

The best chance of a scoreless second period came at 10:10, when Audy-Marchessault was awarded a penalty shot after he was hooked while working his way past the Admiral defense.  Janus, though, came up with a glove save on Audy-Marchessault’s penalty shot bid.

The Admirals dominated the third period, outshooting the Whale 18-2, but Talbot held the fort until the 10:52 mark, when Tyler Johnson tied the score.  The Whale won a defensive-zone draw but were unable to control the puck, and Ondrej Palat was able to work it off the left-wing boards to Johnson in front of the net.  Johnson nearly fanned on his shot, but was able to shove the puck through Talbot’s pads, for the goal that would end up forcing the overtime.

The series win was the first ever in a best-of-seven series for Norfolk, which will now go on to the Eastern Conference Finals to face the winner of a Game Seven Saturday between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and St. John’s in St. John’s.

It’s never too early to think about a Whale ticket package for the 2012-13 season.  For information on season seats, mini plans and group discounts, visit www.ctwhale.com, or call the CT Whale ticket office at (860) 728-3366 to talk with an account executive today.

Patriots Make Staff Changes; Sign Two UDFA’s

The New England Patriots made some changes amongst the coaching staff official on Thursday by announcing that Matt Patricia is now the defensive coordinator.

New England PatriotsPatricia, who was the safeties coach, has called all the defensive plays from the sideline since Dean Pees left the team after the 2009 season.

The RPI grad has coached at his alma mater as a grad assistant, then he went on to Amherst College as defensive line coach, then Syracuse as the offensive grad assistant, before he came to New England as the offensive coaching assistant in 2004.

In his time with the Patriots he has been an assistant offensive line coach, linebackers coach, safeties coach and now defensive coordinator.

In addition to the Patricia promotion the team also announced that Steve Belichick was named as a coaching assistant.

Belichick, the son of the head coach, is following in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather, for who he is named.

The younger Belichick, a Rutgers grad, walked onto the football team as the long snapper in 2011 after having played lacrosse for four seasons at the university.

As a coaching assistant his duties and responsibilities will vary with the needs of the team.  The younger Belichick is no stranger to breaking down film and being on the sidelines as he has been seen numerous times near his father during games.

Other differences in this seasons coaching staff from last season are: Pepper Johnson is now the linebackers coach, Patrick Graham will coach the defensive line, Brian Flores is the safeties coach and Josh Boyer has the cornerbacks.  George Godsey moves from offensive assistant to tight ends coach and Joe Judge will be the special teams assistant.

Holdovers from last season include offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who came back to the Patriots during the playoffs, running backs coach Ivan Fears, wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea, special teams coach Scott O’Brien and offensive line coach/assistant head coach Dante Scarnecchia.

The Patriots also signed two undrafted free agents they are RB Brandon Bolden out of Mississippi and DL Justin Francis from Rutgers.

Bolden is second in Mississippi history in touchdowns with 33 including 27 rushing and 4th in rushing yards with 2,604.  In 2011 he played in 10 games and had 4 TD’s and ran for 462 yards.

Francis appeared in 12 games for Rutgers and made 60 tackles, he had 5.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception and 5 passes defensed in 2011.
