Syracuse Crunch 4, Connecticut Whale 0

Syracuse, NY, February 24, 2013 – Cedrick Desjardins made 28 saves to get the shutout, and Tyler Johnson scored twice, as the Syracuse Crunch defeated the Connecticut Whale 4-0 Sunday at the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter.

CT WhaleIt was the second consecutive shutout for Desjardins, and his second in three games since he joined the Crunch in a trade.  Pierre-Cedric Labrie and J.T. Wyman also scored for Syracuse, which was 2/5 on the power play.  Ondrej Palat had three assists and Mark Barberio had two helpers.

Cam Talbot made 34 saves in the Whale net.  The Whale played two skaters short of the normal roster limit of 18, after defenseman Blake Parlett was injured in Saturday’s 2-1 overtime loss at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

“I thought we gave a pretty honest effort,” Whale head coach Ken Gernander said.  “The first goal was a little bit tough to take, an unfortunate bounce, and then we had a couple of individual breakdowns on some penalty-kill situations.  I thought the score wasn’t necessarily indicative of the game.  I thought we had some chances and that we carried the play for stretches of time.”

The Crunch built a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Labrie and Johnson.

Labrie opened the scoring at 9:11, after Whale defenseman Sean Collins didn’t see a loose puck near his own goalmouth.  Vlad Namestnikov fed it to Labrie, who moved right to left across the slot and fired a shot past the stick side of Talbot.

Johnson then tallied his AHL-leading 27th of the year on the game’s first power play at 14:29.  With Logan Pyett in the penalty box for holding, Johnson took a cross-slot feed from Palat at the left side of the goalmouth and got a low, hard shot past Talbot.

The only goal of the second period also came off of Johnson’s stick, on another power play at 18:16.  Barberio found Johnson in the left circle and Johnson had time to wind up for a shot, beating Talbot on the glove side.

Wyman completed the scoring at 7:34 of the third period, after the Whale misplayed an exchange of the puck just inside the Crunch blue line.  Palat carried the puck into the Connecticut zone and dished to Wyman, who deflected it just underneath the pads of a sliding Talbot.

The loss dropped the Whale to 25-23-5-2 on the year.  With 57 points, the Whale continue to hold down the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Worcester.

The Whale’s next action is on home ice, this Friday, March 1 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 PM.  As at all Friday-night Whale home games, fans that night can enjoy $1 hot dogs and $2 beers at the XL Center until the end of the first intermission.

For all Whale home games, tickets start as low as $10 each ($12 each when tickets are purchased on the day of the game), at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, through TicketMaster Charge-by-Phone at 1-800-745-3000 and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.

Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB Preview – Day 1 – NL West

Welcome to the Gigantic Sox and Dawgs 2013 MLB preview.  Over the next week you will get a team by team look at its key players, new faces, their potential MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year candidates, their possible starting lineup and rotation as well as a quick summary.

2013 SOX & Dawgs NL West PreviewWe will also select a MVP candidate and Cy Young candidate for each team no matter what their predicted team outcome is.

This preview was sculpted over the off season with some mild tweaking as we went along prior to publication.  It comes from a culmination of reading many hours of baseball research.

I hope you enjoy this look at the upcoming season.  I know everyone will not agree with me and that’s fine put it in the comments or hit me up on Twitter or via email

It was a lot of work but a lot of fun compiling this preview and starting today we will take a look at the National League West.  The rest of the schedule follows with a different division being profiled each day and the final day will bring you the winners, award selections and a list of managers who have a lot to prove in 2013 if they want to be on the bench in 2014.

Tomorrow you will get the American League West preview followed by the NL Central, AL Central, NL East and AL East.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you're on the home page.

National League West

The National League West will once again see the Giants take the division flag come years end but will also see the Dodgers contend for the division title.  It will be the Giants pitching that will overcome the Dodgers hitting.  The Diamondbacks should also be in the picture at least until August while the Padres and Rockies expect to be on the outside looking in.

San Francisco Giants1. San Francisco – Manager Bruce Bochy (7th year/19th overall)

When you win two World Series titles in a three year span you should be the favorite for your division and that’s where I have the Giants.  Buster Posey may be the game’s best player but once again after him there is not a lot of pop in the line up although it’s possibly better than last year.  It will be the defense and the outstanding pitching, both the starters and bullpen, that propels them.  What has set them aside the last few years is the late season moves always seem to work out for the best even though they may have overpaid to retain two of those late season acquisitions in CF Angel Pagan and 2B Marco Scutaro.

Buster Posey #28 of the San Francisco Giants looks on against the Detroit Tigers during Game Four of the Major League Baseball World Series at Comerica Park on October 28, 2012 in Detroit, Michigan. Home Field: AT&T Park

Key Players: C Buster Posey; RF Hunter Pence; SS Brandon Crawford; SP Matt Cain; RP Sergio Romo

MVP Candidate: C Buster Posey

Cy Young Candidate: P Matt Cain

ROY Candidate: 1B/3B Conor Gillaspie

Key Additions: OF Andres Torres; RP Sandy Rosario; RP Chad Gaudin

Possible lineup: Pagan CF; Scutaro 2B; Sandoval 3B; Posey C; Pence RF; Belt 1B; Crawford SS; Blanco LF

Possible rotation: Cain; Bumgarner; Lincecum; Volgelsong; Zito

Los Angeles Dodgers2. Los Angeles – Manager Don Mattingly (3rd year)

New owners, the Guggenheim Group, came in with deep pockets and showed they weren’t afraid to spend money and now they have baseball’s largest payroll at this time.  They have a good lineup but could use a better option at third other than Luis Cruz or Juan Uribe.  Even though they lack a true closer and could possibly use an additional situational lefty in the pen it is expected that they will seriously challenge the Giants for the division.

Matt Kemp #27 of the Los Angeles Dodgers cewlebrates as he crosses home after hitting a solo home run in the second inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 2, 2012 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CaliforniaHome Field: Dodger Stadium

Key Players: 1B Adrian Gonzalez; SS Hanley Ramirez; CF Matt Kemp; P Clayton Kershaw; P Chad Billingsley

MVP Candidate: 1B Adrian Gonzalez; CF Matt Kemp

Cy Young Candidate: P Clayton Kershaw

ROY Candidate: P Hyun-Jin Ryu

Key Additions: 2B/OF Skip Schumaker; P Zack Greinke; P Hyun-Jin Ryu; RP J.P. Howell; RP Rob Rasmussen; C Tim Federowicz

Possible lineup: Crawford* LF; M. Ellis 2B; Gonzalez 1B; Ramirez SS; Kemp CF; Ethier RF; Cruz 3B; A.J. Ellis C;

*Crawford may not be ready to play until early May after Tommy John surgery.  If that’s the case flip his spot with Either and Hairston will LF.

Possible rotation: Kershaw; Greinke; Beckett; Ryu; Harang**

**Billingsley is up in the air for 2013 after an elbow injury and Harang would be a candidate for his spot.

Arizona Diamondbacks3. Arizona – Manager Kirk Gibson (4th year)

The Arizona Diamondbacks are looking for some consistency they had too many mental lapses in 2012 and it cost them.  After making the playoffs in 2011 they failed to get back to the post season even with the additional wild card team in each league.  They have a young talented starting rotation and they did some overhauling of the roster again which included dealing Justin Upton to Atlanta but I don’t see them beating out the Giants or Dodgers for the division but they could hang in there for a wild card berth.  Look for rookie Adam Eaton to be an impact player on offense and defense.

Ian Kennedy #31 of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on May 30, 2012 in San Francisco, California. Home Field: Chase Field

Key Players: 3B Martin Prado; 1B Paul Goldschmidt; CF Adam Eaton; P Ian Kennedy; P J.J. Putz

MVP Candidate: 3B Martin Prado

Cy Young Candidate: P Ian Kennedy

ROY Candidate: CF Adam Eaton and P Tyler Skaggs

Key Additions: OF Cody Ross; 3B Eric Chavez; P Brandon McCarthy; SS Cliff Pennington; RP Heath Bell; 1B/OF Eric Hinske; 3B Martin Prado; P Randall Delgado; RP Matt Reynolds

Possible lineup: Eaton CF; Hill 2B; M. Montero C; Kubel LF; Goldschmidt 1B; Prado 3B; Ross RF; Pennington SS

Possible rotation: Kennedy; McCarthy; Cahill; Miley; Delgado

Colorado Rockies4. Colorado – Manager Walt Weiss (1st year)

The Rockies floundered in 2012 after a major overhaul of the major league roster and that cost some people their jobs including manager Jim Tracy who has been replaced by Walt Weiss who was coaching high school baseball and Colorado only gave him only a one-year contract.  They’re going to have to fight to stay out of the cellar in 2013, they should score some runs especially at Coors Field but it is the pitching that will doom them.  The starters have a history of injuries and giving up tons of runs, the bullpen was overworked in 2012 and that needs to change.

Carlos Gonzalez #5 of the Colorado Rockies hits a homerun against the San Diego Padres during an MLB game on July 20, 2012 in San Diego, California. Players of the Colorodo Rockies are wearing 7-20 eye black stickers in mourning over the Aurora, Colorado shootings. Home Field: Coors Field

Key Players: LF Carlos Gonzalez; SS Troy Tulowitzki; RF Michael Cuddyer; P Jorge De La Rosa; P Rafael Betancourt

MVP Candidate: LF Carlos Gonzalez

Cy Young Candidate: P Jorge De La Rosa

ROY Candidate: RP Daniel Rosenbaum

Key Additions: Mgr Walt Weiss; RP Daniel Rosenbaum; 3B Ryan Wheeler; OF Ken Williams; RP Wilton Lopez

Possible lineup: Fowler CF; Rutledge 2B; Gonzalez LF; Tulowitzki SS; Cuddyer RF; Helton 1B; Rosario C; Nelson 3B

Possible rotation: De La Rosa; Chacin; Pomerantz; Nicasio; Francis

San Diego Padres5. San Diego – Manager Bud Black (7th year)

The Padres should once again struggle to get to .500 this season and they’ll have trouble scoring runs even with the fences at Petco moved in.  Any success that San Diego has will most likely come if the pitching holds up but the staff as a whole lack depth due to injuries and resources.  They’re defense is poor except on the infield corners where they are anchored by Chase Headley and Yonder Alonso. They will miss C Yasmani Grandal who is suspended 50 games for PEDs and was expected to play a part this season.

Chase Headley #7 of the San Diego Padres watches the flight of his grand slam hit during the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park on September 9, 2012 in San Diego, California. Home Field: Petco Park

Key Players: 3B Chase Headley; 1B Yonder Alonso; LF Carlos Quentin; P Edinson Volquez; RP Huston Street

MVP Candidate: RF Carlos Quentin

Cy Young Candidate: P Edinson Volquez

ROY Candidate: P Casey Kelly

Key Additions: P Jason Marquis; P Tyson Ross; RP Wilfredo Boscan; IF Cody Ransom; P Freddy Garcia

Possible lineup: Cabrera SS; Forsythe 2B; Headley 3B; Quentin LF; Alonso 1B; Denorfia RF; Maybin CF; Hudley C

Possible rotation: Volquez; Richard; Marquis; Stults; T. Ross

Video: Napier Helps UConn Get Past DePaul, 81-69

UConn's Shabazz Napier goes airborne looking for a teammate against DePaul at the Allstate Arena Saturday night.

Someone needs to make a new version of the Ghostbusters theme song from "Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!" to "Who ya gonna call? Shabazz!?

Seriously folks, if it weren't for Shabazz Napier, there's no telling how Saturday night's game would have ended up.

Behind 28 points from Napier, the UConn Huskies rallied from a first half deficit to beat the DePaul Blue Demons 81-68 in front of 8,862 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL.

UConn improves to 19-7 (9-5 Big East) while DePaul falls to 11-16 (2-12).

Besides his 28 points, Napier also had a team-high seven rebounds and four assists. Omar Calhoun was a big part of the second half comeback as he scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half. He also had five rebounds and four assists.

Ryan Boatright, who hails from nearby Aurora, didn't disappoint the hometown fans as he had 17 points, four rebounds and six assists. Niels Giffey came off the bench to add 10 points.

One-time UConn commit Cleveland Melvin led the Blue Demons with his 14th career double-double and seventh of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds.  Brandon Young added 13 points and six assists while Worrel Clahar had 10 points and a team-high seven assists.

The Huskies controlled the middle part of the first half before DePaul took control and an eventual three-point lead at the half, 37-34.

After Clahar opened up the second half, UConn went on a 11-2 burst to take 45-41 lead. Melvin then followed with a six point run of his own that included two dunks to put the hometown team back on top.

But behind Napier and Calhoun, the Huskies seized control of the game with a 13-0 run. They would continue to build their lead to 74-57 and never looked back.

I'm sure Napier won't win Big East Player of the Year but he has to be considered. What he has done for the Huskies this season, there are no words for. Sure there's been times where he's been off. But for the most part, he has carried this team on his back.

You also have to think that Kevin Ollie has a really good chance of winning Big East Coach of the Year. What he has done with what was left for him is beyond remarkable. He got these kids to play for him and believe in his system. Now he's one win away from 20 in his first year as coach.

Getting No. 20 won't be easy though next time out as the Huskies wil host the Georgetown Hoyas on Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2, Connecticut Whale 1 (OT)

Wilkes-Barre, PA, February 23, 2013 – Rookie defenseman Joe Morrow’s goal with 52.5 seconds left in overtime gave the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 2-1 win over the Connecticut Whale Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

CT WhaleWith the win, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton moved to two points ahead of the Whale (25-22-5-2, 57 points) in the Eastern Conference playoff race.  The Whale currently hold down the eighth-and-final playoff spot in the conference, three points ahead of ninth-place Worcester.

Brandon Segal scored the only Whale goal Saturday, and former Whale Chad Kolarik had the other Penguin tally.  Trevor Smith assisted on both Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goals.  Jeff Zatkoff got the win in the Penguin net with 26 saves, and Cam Talbot stopped 30 shots for the Whale, who played the game one skater short of the roster limit of 18.

“It was a hard-fought game by us,” Segal said.  “We had a depleted lineup, and it was a little rough at the start, but as the game went on we got better and better.  We gave a heck of an effort and can definitely take a positive out of this game.”

The deciding goal resulted from a faceoff win by Smith in the Whale zone.  He drew the puck back to the left point to Joey Mormina, and he sent it to Morrow at the middle of the blue line.  Morrow’s long snap shot found its way past Talbot to end the game.

Scoring chances were scarce in the first period, in which the Whale were outshot 8-5, and the Whale’s best chance of the second period was a partial breakaway for Andrew Carroll around the seven-minute mark.

Carroll made a move to the forehand but Zatkoff got his right skate to the post, and Carroll’s try went wide.  Near the end of the period, Kolarik was able to walk up the slot in the Connecticut zone, but his shot went off the crossbar behind Talbot.

The game remained scoreless headed into the third period, before the two teams traded power-play goals only 1:27 apart early in the third.

First it was Kolarik finding the net at 4:16, with Segal in the penalty box for closing his hand on the puck.  Smith fed a pass across to an unchecked Kolarik at the left side of the slot, and he was easily able to bang the puck in.

The Whale responded at 5:43 on a two-man advantage, after Zach Sill was hit with a double-minor for high-sticking Kelsey Tessier only 34 seconds after Tom Kostopoulos took an interference minor.

On the five-on-three, Kris Newbury fed the puck from the right-wing faceoff dot across the slot to Segal, whose one-timer from the bottom of the left circle beat Zatkoff.

The Whale continue a two-game road weekend Sunday afternoon in Syracuse, with a 3:00 PM game against the Crunch.  All of the action of that game can be heard live on “Beethoven Radio” AM 1290, as well as on-line at www.ctwhale.com.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com

The next home game for the Whale is this Friday, March 1 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 PM.

Video: No Senior Day Letdown in UConn’s 90-30 Win Over Seton Hall

UConn coach Geno Auriemma with his graduating seniors Kelly Faris, Caroline Doty and Heather Buck.

In 2012, the UConn Huskies women's basketball team suffered a meltdown against the St. John's Red Storm and lost. It ended all sorts of winning streaks for the UConn women's team.

In 2013, UConn's seniors along with the rest of the team made sure that didn't happen. Plus coming off of a loss on Monday, you knew the Seton Hall Pirates were in trouble.

The Huskies started out on a 13-3 run to start the game and never looked back in a very easy 90-30 win over the Pirates in front of 9,107 on Senior Day at Gampel Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

UConn improves to 25-2 (12-1 Big East) while Seton Hall falls to 9-18 (4-10).

The Huskies were led by Kelly Faris and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis who both had 18 points. Ironically enough for both them, they reached the 1,000 point plateau in their careers. KML did it first and Faris did it later in the game. They are the 37th and 38th players to reach that milestone while at UConn.

Faris also had seven assists and seven steals. The seven steals put her over the 500 mark in her career.

Breanna Stewart, noticeably absent in the scoring column lately, returned to form with 16 points and eight rebounds. Stefanie Dolson rounded out the Huskies in double digits with 12 points and nine rebounds.

UConn's two other seniors, Caroline Doty and Heather Buck, had five points and four points respectively.

Terry Green came off the bench to lead Seton Hall with 12 points. The only member of the Pirates starting five to score was Ka-Deidre Simmons who had nine points and team-highs of four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Seton Hall's main problem was taking care of the ball and that helped the Huskies out tremendously early on. Of course with KML bombing in threes as well, the Pirates had no chance in this game from the get go.

It was nice to see Stewart bounce back in this one. She had been in a serious funk lately. And one point, head coach Geno Auriemma was seen screaming at her.

Next thing you know, Stewart scores the next eight points and is crashing the boards, blocking a shot and playing like the Stewart we all saw earlier in the season.

She'll need to continue this going forward because she is an integral part of this UConn team.

The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday night when they'll host the Pittsburgh Panthers in their XL Center regular season finale. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Rangers Recall Christian Thomas From Whale

NEW YORK, February 23, 2013 –New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has recalled forward Christian Thomas from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

CT WhaleThomas, 20, has tallied four goals and three assists in the last six games with Connecticut, including a career-high, three-point effort on February 9 at St. John’s (one goal, two assists). He has registered 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points, along with 13 penalty minutes in 52 games with the Whale this season. Thomas leads all Connecticut rookies in goals, points, power play goals (three) and shots on goal (104), and is tied for fifth on the team overall in points, ranks fourth in goals and shots, and is tied for third in power play goals. He has posted four multi-point performances, including multi-goal efforts on November 10 at Worcester (two goals) and February 15 against Portland (two goals).

The 5-9, 170-pounder registered one goal and one assist in five games with Connecticut last season. He made his professional debut with Connecticut on April 7, 2012, at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and recorded his first professional points with a goal and an assist on April 13, 2012, against Manchester. Thomas also skated in six postseason contests with the Whale during the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Prior to turning professional, Thomas skated in 244 career games over four seasons with the Oshawa Generals and London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), registering 137 goals and 120 assists for 257 points, along with 91 penalty minutes. He established OHL career-highs in games played (66), goals (54), assists (45), points (99), power play goals (19), penalty minutes (38) and plus/minus rating (plus-20) during the 2010-11 season. He and his father, former NHL forward Steve Thomas, became the first father-son duo to record 50+ goals in an OHL campaign. Thomas led the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) in goals over a two-year span, registering 95 goals combined over the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

The Toronto, Ontario native was originally selected as the Rangers’ second round choice, 40th overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
