LeNeveu Thrilled to be Returning to Wolf Pack Net

By Bob Crawford

What was newly-signed Hartford Wolf Pack goaltender David LeNeveu’s reaction when he heard that the Pack were interested in him?

David LeNeveu“I said, ‘Let’s sign the papers right now!,’” the veteran netminder said with a chuckle.

Like his new Wolf Pack stablemate, Dov Grumet-Morris, LeNeveu is going “back to the future” with the Pack.  Grumet-Morris had spent time in the Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale net in 2010-11, and LeNeveu played 13 late-season games with the Pack in 2007-08, after the parent New York Rangers acquired him in a trade-deadline deal with the Phoenix Coyotes.

“I loved my time when I was here,” LeNeveu said Wednesday, a day after inking an AHL contract with the Wolf Pack.  “We tried to come back (after 2007-08), and unfortunately it didn’t work out before.  I’d been saying I’d want to come back every year since, so finally it came through for me, and I’m real excited to be back.

“Actually, it (this chance with the Wolf Pack) came right out of the blue.  Obviously I’ve seen the struggles that they’ve had this year, and they brought Dov in and I thought they were pretty set with what they were doing, but I was thankful for the opportunity to try and make the most of it here and get this thing going.”

LeNeveu had excellent success in his short earlier stint with the Wolf Pack, going 8-3-2 with a 1.83 goals-against average, a 92.4 % save percentage and one shutout in his 13 appearances.  That was for a Pack team that finished with 50 wins and a franchise-record 110 points under first-year head coach Ken Gernander, but were upset in the first round of the postseason by the Portland Pirates.

“I was just coming in here trying to do everything I could to win,” LeNeveu remembered of that stretch run in Hartford.  “Obviously, we were gearing up for playoffs, and we were trying to make a playoff run, but unfortunately we fell short that year, and that’s the real goal.  Coming in here, it’s the same idea again, we’ve got to win.  We’ve got to get a bunch of wins going here, and that’s all the focus is right now.”

This has been a bit of a strange year so far for LeNeveu, who is in his 11th year of pro hockey out of Cornell University.  After playing last season in Austria, the 30-year-old Fernie, B.C. native found himself squeezed out of a tight North American goaltending jobs market, and was without a team until signing with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL November 27.

“We decided last year that my goal was to get back to the NHL, and the only way to do that is to come back over to North America,” LeNeveu said.  “And unfortunately, there just didn’t seem to be a job that showed up.  We thought we could get one early and it didn’t happen, guys took spots and I was kind of left on the outside looking in.  And that unfortunately happens, especially as you get older, and sitting out is no fun.  I kept busy, though, we had a bunch of stuff going on, but at the end of the day I was going a little bit crazy, and I said, ‘I gotta play.  Just get me anywhere, I gotta play.’  And we were given an opportunity down in South Carolina, which is a great organization.

“The coaching staff down there is unbelievable, they move guys in and out all the time, their goal is to move guys on and upward.  That happened for me as well, so I was thankful for the opportunity there, and I was able to come out with this job.”

LeNeveu did a terrific job of maximizing his chance with the Stingrays, winning his first two ECHL starts by shutout and compiling a record of 4-4-0, with a 1.64 GAA, a 94.0% save percentage and three shutouts in eight games.  Clearly, he did not allow any rust to form on his game during his down time.

“I was raring to go,” LeNeveu said.  “It worked out well when I was at home (in Nanaimo, B.C.), too, because my goalie coach that I’ve work with over the summers, he lives 20 minutes north of me on (Vancouver) Island.  So I was seeing him every week, I was working out with my old junior club, the Nanaimo Clippers, they were nice enough to let me come skate with them and work with their goalies.  So it’s not like I was just sitting at home, I was on the ice every single day, I was working out every single day.  I was just chomping at the bit to get going, and once the opportunity came, I was just stepping right in.”

So LeNeveu has gone from being full-time at home with his wife April and three daughters, to being all the way across the continent, first in Charleston, South Carolina and now in Hartford.  With LeNeveu’s oldest daughter, Ashlynn, being six years old and already in school, and her four-year-old sister Hannah going to preschool, the family is going to stay in Western Canada.

“I’m going to go visit over the All-Star break, and then hopefully they’re going to come over here over spring break,” LeNeveu said.  “Then we’re just going to play it by ear, because there’s no point in pulling our kids out of school mid-year.  It would be too late, it would be tough on the family life.  And my wife’s got a good routine going at home too.

“We’ve got Face Time, we’ve got Skype, we’re talking every day.  It’s not the ideal situation, but it happens from time to time in a hockey life and we’ll make it work.

“That’s the life of a hockey player usually.  There’s a very select few that get to stay in one organization for most of their career or their whole career, and everybody else has to kind of go where the contracts are.  And that’s just life.  If you want to play hockey, you’ve got to go where your offer is.”

This latest offer gives LeNeveu not only the opportunity to return to familiar ground, but also to share a net with Grumet-Morris, who is a fellow Ivy League product (Grumet-Morris played at Harvard at the same time LeNeveu starred at Cornell) and has also had a much-traveled career throughout the pro ranks.

“It’s funny, me and him were talking this morning, everywhere I go or everywhere he goes, one of us follows,” LeNeveu said of his former ECAC foe.  “He went to Austria, and I followed and I was in Austria.  I was in San Antonio and then up in Phoenix, and he was in San Antonio.  Everywhere he is, I am, and vice versa.  We know each other very well and we have a great relationship, so I’m looking forward to working with him.”

It’s been over a decade now since the two years (2001-02 and 2002-03) in which LeNeveu and Grumet-Morris went head-to-head as backstops of a pair of bitter ECAC rivals, but LeNeveu remembers it fondly.

“Obviously it’s a huge rivalry,” he said, “and at that time we probably hated each other, because nobody wanted to lose those games, that’s for sure, but we had a blast.  We both had successful college careers, and I’m just happy to be riding this wave along with him.”

Though he already has ten professional seasons under his belt, LeNeveu is still relatively young, especially by the standards of the goaltending position, which has seen a number of individuals in recent history not make a breakthrough to the top level until past their 30th birthdays.  LeNeveu believes that the beginning of this year goes into the “whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” category, and feels that he still may be reaching his peak as a player.

“If I didn’t think I could play, this would have been a year that could have sent guys home, saying, ‘You know what, that’s it, I’m retiring,’” LeNeveu said.  “But I have the belief that I’m playing my best hockey right now.  These last couple of years I think I’ve been at the top of my career.  That belief has kept me going.  I believe it, and I know the coaching staff here supports me in it, and you’ve just got to keep going.  You’ve got to keep believing in yourself, get in the right place at the right time, put some wins together and get a little lucky, get the timing right, and you’re off and running.”

Video: UConn GK Andre Blake Taken No. 1 Overall By Philadelphia Union in MLS SuperDraft

UConn Huskies men's soccer junior goalkeeper Andre Blake will be taking his talents to the City of Brotherly Love as he was taken by the Philadelphia Union as the No. 1 overall draft pick on Thursday.

Philadelphia UnionThe Union actually traded the No. 2 pick and some of their allocation money to move up and draft Blake at No. 1

He's the second No. 1 overall pick from UConn joining Chris Gbandi who taken by the then Dallas Burn (now known as FC Dallas).

Blake is also a member of Generation Adidas meaning his salary won't count against the Philadelphia's cap until he graduates from the program. As part of Generation Adidas, Blake will receive a salary that's higher than the league minimum. He'll also receive a scholarship to continue his academic studies should he not make it in the professional ranks.

But something tells me that won't be a problem for the Jamaican National.

Here's UConn's press release:

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.  – University of Connecticut junior goalkeeper Andre Blake became the first goalkeeper ever to be taken with the top pick when he was selected as No. 1 by the Philadelphia Union in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa. Blake joined Chris Gbandi (Dallas, 2002) as the only other Husky to be taken No. 1 overall.

Senior Mamadou Diouf followed Blake when he was selected 30th overall by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the second round. UConn now boasts 31 overall MLS Draft picks, including 10 first-round choices.

Blake, a May Pen, Jamaica native, was widely viewed as one of the most exciting prospects in the years' draft. The keeper has had a tremendous career in a Husky uniform, earning 36 shutouts in his three years as a starter. Blake was twice named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and capped off his impressive run as the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013.

"Andre's selection today has verified what we have thought for some time," said 17th-year head coach Ray Reid. "He is a big time goalkeeper and will have a great professional career."

Blake's 36 career shutouts rank third all-time in program history, while his 46 wins are the fourth most by a Connecticut goalkeeper. In 2013, the keeper amassed a 0.75 goals against average and helped lead the Huskies to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal match. He was named as an NSCAA First Team All-American for the second consecutive season after being tabbed a Third Team All-American after his freshman campaign in 2011.

"For me, everyday I just want to get better," said Blake moments after being selected. "I'm just going to go in and work hard and try to make myself and my team better."

"It was truly a pleasure to work with a talented young man," said UConn assistant coach Mike Mordocco. "The best of Blake is yet to come."

Diouf departs Storrs as one of the most prolific scorers in recent history, tallying 36 total goals, which ranks eighth in Husky history. The Dakar, Senegal native recorded a career-high five assists in 2013 and added two goals. As a junior, Diouf was placed on the All-BIG EAST First Team and was tabbed as BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The forward was a 2012 NSCAA Second Team All-American after a 15-goal season and was named to the All-Conference Second Team in 2013.

"Mamadou leaves UConn with every possible honor he could have achieved," said Reid. "He is deserving of being drafted and will do a fantastic job at the next level.

Red Sox, Badenhop Avoid Arbitration With One-Year Deal

The Boston Red Sox had five players file for salary arbitration on Tuesday.

Boston Red SoxThey were RHP Burke Badenhop, 1B/OF Mike Carp, INF Jonathan Herrera, LHP Andrew Miller and RHP Junichi Tazawa.

As well all know dating back to the Theo Epstein days and continuing on with Ben Cherington, they have not had a single case go to arbitration.

On Wednesday, that streak continued as Badenhop and the Red Sox agreed on a one-year deal worth $2.15 million. The amount of the deal was reported by Alex Speier of WEEI.com.

Here's the full release from the local nine:

BOSTON, MA-The Boston Red Sox today agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Burke Badenhop on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract for the 2014 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration. Terms were not disclosed.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Badenhop was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor league pitcher Luis Ortega on November 22, 2013. The 30-year-old went 2-3 with a 3.47 ERA (24 ER/62.1 IP) in 63 relief appearances for the Brewers in 2013. He held right-handed batters to a .229 average (35-for-153) and finished the season with a 2.05 ERA (5 ER/22.0 IP) over his last 21 games of the season, allowing earned runs just twice in that span. With just 12 free passes allowed all year, he ranked seventh among qualifying National League relievers in fewest walks per nine innings pitched (1.7).

Over the last two years, his first two full seasons in the majors, Badenhop has posted a 3.25 ERA (45 ER/124.2 IP). His 1.7 walk rate in that time ranks fifth among major league relievers with at least 115.0 innings. Since the start of 2012, opponents have grounded into 16 double plays with Badenhop on the mound, a mark surpassed by only nine other major league relievers.

In parts of six big league seasons, Badenhop has a record of 18-20 with three saves, and a 3.98 ERA (166 ER/375.1 IP) in 280 games (10 starts) between the Miami Marlins (2008-11), Tampa Bay Rays (2012), and Brewers (2013). Originally a 19th-round selection of the Detroit Tigers in the 2005 June Draft, he was a part of the Tigers and Marlins trade for Miguel Cabrera which also included current Red Sox left hander Andrew Miller.

The Red Sox have four arbitration-eligible players remaining: first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp, infielder Jonathan Herrera, left-handed pitcher Andrew Miller, and right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa.

Red Sox To Make Three Appearances On ESPN Sunday Night Baseball

Of the schedule that ESPN Sunday Night Baseball announced on Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox are scheduled for three games so far in 2014.

Boston Red SoxThey are:

4/13 – Red Sox @ Yankees, 8:05 p.m.
4/20 – Orioles @ Red Sox, 7:05 p.m.
5/18 – Tigers @ Red Sox, 8:05 p.m.

As Red Sox fans and for the occasional Yankees fan that takes a glimpse at the site, we are all used to seeing the Red Sox and Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball. My problem lies with the game on April 20 against the Orioles.

April 21 is Patriot's Day in Massachusetts. That means it's the day of the Boston Marathon and also that the Red Sox play an 11 a.m. game against whomever is in town that weekend. This year it just happens to be the Orioles.

Look I understand it's the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings. The press release even states that it's going to be a "special telecast".

On average, the Red Sox usually play at least three hour games. So say the game ends at 10 p.m.

By the time the players are done showering and with media responsibilities, it's 11 p.m. at the earliest. They then need to turn around and be back at the ballpark at least 2-3 hours before the game.

To me that's not fair to the players. I'm actually surprised the Red Sox and the players agreed to it.

Or maybe I should at look at it another way and not be so cynical.

The Red Sox embraced the city after the bombings. A lot of what they did for the victims went under the radar. They basically took over the city with first time guys to the team embracing Boston like they were life long residents.

During the Red Sox World Series parade, they stopped at the 26.2 mile marker/finish line and placed the trophies there and had a special little ceremony within the parade.

So perhaps I rushed to judgment with my initial reaction which is normal.

But in the grand scheme of things, it was probably wrong of me to do so especially knowing that ESPN will handle the coverage with grace like it usually does in telecasts of this nature.

To see the full ESPN Sunday Night Baseball schedule that was released, head over to ESPN.

Bria Hartley Named to 2014 Lieberman Award Watch List

STORRS, Conn. – UConn Huskies senior point guard Bria Hartley (North Babylon, N.Y.) has been identified by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a candidate for the 2014 Nancy Lieberman Award. The award recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I College Basketball. The criteria for selection require that players demonstrate the floor leadership, play-making abilities, and ball-handling skills that Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman embodied in her career.

Nancy Lieberman AwardSince its inception in 2000, three Huskies have taken home the award a total of six times. UConn point guards earned the honors in the first five consecutive years of its existence, with Sue Bird earning it the first three years (2000-2002) and Diana Taurasi receiving the accolades in the subsequent two years after Bird (2003, 2004). Renee Montgomery was the last Husky to net the award in 2009.

Hartley has posted excellent numbers for the top-ranked Huskies this season and leads an offense that outscores opponents by an average of 36.7 points. The senior ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.9 points per game, and has been dynamic in her passing game with 4.4 assists per game.

The New York native came alive in the second half of UConn’s game against No. 7 Baylor on Monday night, rattling off 13 of her 17 total points in the second frame to help secure the win. Hartley also demonstrated her defensive abilities in guarding fellow Lieberman candidate Odyssey Sims, helping to hold the nation’s top-scorer to just 4-of-25 from the field in her lowest scoring performance of the season.

Her success this season has translated to recognition on several levels, including league nods as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 18 after a 29-point effort against Penn State to match her career-high. The conference also selected Hartley as a preseason All-Conference Honorable Mention choice, while her name has surfaced on the Wooden, Wade, and Naismith Awards Watch Lists so far this season. Hartley was a WBCA/State Farm All-American in her sophomore year and, more recently, an NCAA All-Tournament honoree following UConn’s ninth National Championship last season.

No. 1 UConn returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 19 when the squad travels to Rutgers for a 3:00pm American Athletic Conference showdown, with televised coverage on ESPN2 .
