Red Sox Avoid Arbitration With Carp, Herrera, Tazawa

The trend continues for Boston Red Sox GM's avoiding arbitration as Mike Carp, Jonathan Herrera and Junichi Tazawa all signed one-year deals on Friday.

Boston Red SoxThis leaves LHP Andrew Miller as the only player who could go to arbitration. Miller is seeking $2.15 million while the Red Sox are offering $1.55 million.

So while a hearing while be scheduled, the Red Sox and Miller can negotiate on a contract to avoid arbitration and keep the streak alive that started with Theo Epstein and that has continued under Ben Cherington.

According to published reports, Carp will receive $1.4 million, Herrera $1.3 million and Tazawa $1.275 million.

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox today agreed to terms with first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp, infielder Jonathan Herrera, and right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa on one-year, non-guaranteed contracts for the 2014 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration. Terms were not disclosed. 

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Carp, 27, hit .296 (64-for-216) with 18 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 43 RBI, and 22 walks in a career-high 86 games in 2013. It was his first campaign with the Red Sox after being acquired from the Seattle Mariners last February. The left-handed batter reached base safely in 40 of his 56 starts between left field (31), first base (23), and right field (2). His .523 slugging percentage ranked eighth among American Leaguers with at least 200 plate appearances last season. He also appeared in six postseason games during Boston's run to the World Series title. Originally signed by the New York Mets as a ninth-round selection in the 2004 June Draft, Carp has hit .267 (203-for-761) with 46 doubles, four triples, 27 homers, and 114 RBI in parts of five major league seasons with the Mariners (2009-12) and Red Sox (2013).

Herrera is entering his first season with the Red Sox after being acquired from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Franklin Morales and minor league right-hander Chris Martin on December 18, 2013. The 29-year-old posted a career-high .292 average (57-for-195) with seven doubles, two triples, one home run, and 16 RBI in 81 games with Colorado in 2013 while appearing defensively at shortstop (42 games), second base (22), third base (5), and left field (2). Signed by the Rockies as an international free agent in 2002, the switch-hitter has batted .265 (261-for-984) with 28 doubles, seven triples, eight homers, 66 RBI, 87 walks, and 14 stolen bases in 375 career big league games over parts of five seasons with the Rockies (2008, 2010-13). 

Tazawa went 5-4 with a 3.16 ERA (24 ER/68.1 IP), 72 strikeouts and a team-high 25 holds for the Red Sox last year, his first full season in the major leagues. The 27-year-old right-hander walked just 12 batters and ranked among AL relief leaders in strikeout-to-walk ratio (T-3rd, 6.0) and fewest walks allowed per nine innings (5th, 1.6). He appeared in 13 of Boston's 16 postseason games, allowing just one run in 7.1 innings for a 1.23 ERA. Tazawa is 8-8 with a 3.45 ERA (54 ER/140.2 IP) and 134 strikeouts compared to just 27 walks in 117 outings (four starts) over four major league seasons with the Red Sox (2009, 2011-13).

With today's agreements, left-handed pitcher Andrew Miller is the only remaining unsigned Red Sox player eligible for salary arbitration.

Four Huskies Appear on Wooden Award Midseason Top-20 List

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The four Connecticut women’s basketball players who earned a spot on the Wooden Award Preseason Watch List have retained their status on the now-narrowed Top-20 Midseason List. The UConn Huskies quartet of Stefanie Dolson, Bria Hartley, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, and Breanna Stewart, who all average double figures for the Huskies, represent the American Athletic Conference along with Louisville’s Shoni Schimmel. UConn leads all universities with four selections, while three players hail from Notre Dame and two from Duke.

John R. Wooden AwardDolson has posted big numbers so far in her senior season, making history with UConn’s second triple-double against Oregon (26 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists) on Nov. 20. Dolson averages 13.2 points per contest and, against Houston, set a career-high with eight blocks. The senior then matched that performance with eight blocks in the team’s subsequent game against Temple. Dolson eclipsed 1,500 career points against Memphis on Jan. 4, joining fellow senior Bria Hartley and becoming the third set of UConn classmates to net 1,500 career tallies.

Hartley, who was just named to the 2014 Lieberman Award Watch List earlier this week, averages 13.9 points per game and 4.4 assists per game. The senior hsa scored 20-plus points in three contests this season, including a career-high tying 29 points against Penn State on Nov. 17 to help her earn Conference Player of the Week Honors from the American.

After suffering an injury that sidelined her for eight games, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis returned to the court against No. 2 Duke on Dec. 17 and wasted little time returning to form as the NCAA’s reigning 3-point shooter. The junior set a career-high by making seven 3-pointers, finishing with 21 total points against the Blue Devils. The California native is averaging 11.1 points and 1.5 assists per game.

Stewart leads the squad from a statistical standpoint, averaging 18.1 points per game and 2.7 blocks per contest. In what has been an excellent sophomore campaign she has tied her career-high in points (29 against then-No. 21 Cal), blocked shots (6 against Houston), and set a career-best with 13 rebounds against UC-Davis.  Stewart has recorded five double-double games and scored more than 20 points on seven occasions this season. She has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week twice (Dec. 23, Jan. 13), WBCA National Player of the Week (Dec. 24), and, for the second time in three years, received USA Basketball’s Female Athlete of the Year Award.

Hartford Wolf Pack 4, Adirondack Phantoms 2

Glens Falls, NY, January 17, 2014 – Andrew Yogan’s early third-period goal was the winner for the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center, in a 4-2 victory over the Adirondack Phantoms.

Hartford Wolf PackAfter the Wolf Pack had trailed 1-0 and 2-1, Yogan put the Wolf Pack ahead 1:24 into the third.  Yogan was allowed to step out from behind the net to the left of Adirondack goaltender Cal Heeter, and Yogan snapped a shot between Heeter and the goal post.

Ryan Bourque and Darroll Powe also scored for Hartford, and Jesper Fast had an empty-netter.  Aaron Johnson had three assists and J.T. Miller had a pair of helpouts.  David LeNeveu made 26 saves to get the win in his first Wolf Pack game of the year.

The victory snapped an 0-5-0-1 streak for the Wolf Pack, who improved to 12-20-0-5 for 29 points on the season.

“I thought it was a much better effort,” Wolf Pack head coach Ken Gernander said.  “We took some penalties that certainly we can’t afford to take, and we’ll have to address that, but by and large it was a pretty good effort and I liked a lot of things in the game.”

Jason Akeson had a goal and an assist for Adirondack, and ex-Wolf Pack Kris Newbury also scored for the Phantoms.

Power plays ruled the day in the first period, as the two clubs combined for three man-advantage goals, two by Adirondack.

The Phantoms grabbed the game’s first lead at 5:55 of the first frame, on an Akeson slap shot from the middle of the blue line.  Brandon Manning fed a pass to Akeson, whose shot got by the stick side of LeNeveu, who signed an AHL contract with the Wolf Pack Tuesday.

The Wolf Pack tied it at 9:20, with Zack FitzGerald in the box for interference.  Ryan Bourque scored his eighth of the year, and extended a point-scoring streak to a pro career-high five games, when he deflected the puck in from close range to the left of Adirondack goaltender Cal Heeter (33 saves), after Johnson snapped it at the net from the left circle.

Newbury put Adirondack back in front with 2:23 remaining in the period, after Micheal Haley picked up four minutes in penalties at 14:46.

Manning set Newbury up at the top of the right circle, and Newbury released his shot quickly and got it behind LeNeveu.

The Wolf Pack got the only goal of the second period, and it was the third in the last five games for Powe, at 6:02.  Johnson worked the puck off the left-wing boards to Powe at the top of the circle, and Powe unloaded a perfect shot that went off the post on Heeter’s stick side and into the net.

That came after Fast was awarded a penalty shot at 4:53, after he got behind the Phantom defense and was knocked off stride by Oliver Lauridsen.  Heeter, though, made a pad save on Fast’s penalty-shot attempt.

Yogan’s goal was part of a strong third-period effort by the Wolf Pack, who outshot Adirondack 15-8 in the third.  Fast put the final touch on the victory with 3.5 seconds left, taking a pass from Oscar Lindberg and sliding the puck into the empty net from just above the left-wing faceoff dot, after the Phantoms had pulled Heeter.

2013 Red Sox World Series Trophy Heads to Japan

BOSTON, MA – Boston Red Sox bullpen members Junichi Tazawa and closer Koji Uehara will be joined by Wally the Green Monster in Tokyo to share the 2013 World Series trophy with baseball fans in Japan. The trophy will be in Japan January 20-22. The tour is part of a broader effort to share the World Series trophy with fans throughout New England, the U.S., and the globe.

Boston Red SoxThe schedule will include a visit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe at his residence on January 21. During that visit, Tazawa, Uehara, and Wally will present the trophy and a Red Sox jersey to the Prime Minister. 

The trophy will then be unveiled at Akasaka Sacas, the Tokyo Broadcasting System. The event is open to the public.

Later in the evening, the trophy is scheduled to appear at a reception at the residence of U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Bouvier Kennedy. In addition to Tazawa, Uehara, and Wally, Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa will be in attendance.

Baseball fans in Japan will have a chance to see the trophy on January 22 at a viewing at the MLB Café Tokyo.

Before making the trip to Japan, the trophy will first stop in California, today, January 17, where it will visit three popular gathering spots for Red Sox Nation residents living in Southern California, including Fat Face Fenner's Fishack in Hermosa Beach, The Garage in Los Angeles, and Sonny McLean's in Santa Monica.

As of Thursday the line on the game from Sports Betting via Yahoo Sports has the Patriots at PLUS 6.  The over/under is 56.

My Prediction is Broncos 34, Patriots, 30.  Take the points (Patriots) and take the over.  I am 5-11 against the spread and 9 of 16 on calling the over/under in 2013.

Broncos have sold out every home game since the 1970 season.  With regular season and postseason combined Denver has sold out 360 consecutive games.

Television

CBS is televising the game nationally Jim Nantz will do play by play while Phil Simms will provide the game analysis and Tracy Wolfson will work the sidelines.  You can look here for your local affiliate.

CBS is also streaming the game via your computer, laptop or tablet.  Cell phone streaming rights belong to Verizon.

There is no DirecTV designation.

Radio

The Patriots Radio Network broadcasts the game from flagship station WBZ-FM, 98.5 the Sports Hub in Boston. Bob Socci handles the play-by-play and former Patriots QB Scott Zolak will do game analysis. It all starts with Gary Tanguay and Andy Gresh with the pregame show at 12 p.m. on the network. The post game starts after the final gun and continues for three hours along the network.

The Patriots Radio Network game call is available on Sirius Channel 92, XM Channel 225 and SiriusXM Internet Channel 818.

The Broncos Radio Network has former Broncos players Dave Logan calling the play by play and Ed McCaffrey does the color via their flagship station 850 KOA AM and KRFX 103.5 FM.

Bill Belichick is 7-10 vs. the Broncos overall in his career.  He is 7-6 as the head coach in New England including 1-1 in the playoffs.

Overall in his NFL career Belichick is 199-105 in his 19th NFL season as a head coach.  He is 163-61 with New England and 36-44 with Cleveland.  He is 19-8 in the playoffs, 18-7 as head coach of the Patriots in the post season.  When you combine his regular season and post season records he is 218-113.

Belichick’s 19 postseason wins tie him for 2nd all-time with Don Shula (19) and he is one away from career leader Tom Landry (20).

He has won 5 conference titles; he needs one more to tied Don Shula’s record of 6.

Belichick is one of just four coaches to win three Super Bowls, joining Chuck Noll (4), Joe Gibbs (3) and Bill Walsh (3).  Those men are all in the Hall of Fame.

This is Fox’s third season as the head coach in Denver he is 34-14 in the regular season and 2-2 in the playoffs for an overall record of 36-16. Prior to that Fox was the head coach of the Carolina Panthers for 9 seasons and had a record of 73-71 in the regular season and 8-5 in the playoffs.  Combined between Denver and Carolina he is 107-85 in the regular season and 10-7 in the playoffs for an overall mark of 117-92.

Fox is 1-6 vs. New England as a head coach including 0-2 in the post season combined between Denver and Carolina.

His 114 career wins are 5th among active head coaches.

Fox missed several games midseason due to health reasons and was replaced by defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.  Fox missed the Week 12 games vs. the Patriots at Foxboro.

Video: UConn Men Upset No. 17 Memphis, 83-73

At this point, does anyone even remember the Texas two-misstep the UConn Huskies men's basketball had around the New Year? If you do, they are certainly doing their collective best the last few games to make you forget.

UConn's Shabazz Napier, left, and Lasan Kromah react on the bench during the second half. And Thursday night on a national stage was no different and in a place that is one of the hardest to pick up a road victory.

An 8-0 run after the score was tied at 62 was good enough to push UConn to an 83-73 upset win over the No. 17 Memphis Tigers at FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN.

The Huskies improve to 14-3 (2-2 American) while the Tigers fall to 13-4 (2-2).

DeAndre Daniels led the way for the Huskies with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds and he also had three blocked shots. Not to be outdone, Shabazz Napier had a double-double of his own with 17 points and 10 assists. Lasan Kromah added 13 points.

Michael Dixon, Jr. led the way for the Tigers with 16 points. Austin Nichols had 13 points while Joe Jackson had 11. Shaq Goodwin finished with 10 points.

Geron Davis had a team-high six rebounds and seven assists while finishing with eight points in a losing effort.

The first half was a game of runs that saw each team get out to a lead then have it disappear. The Tigers would a one-point advantage at the half.

But UConn would open up the second half on a 10-2 run to get back out in front. Of course it went all for naught as the Tigers got back to one at 49-48. It stayed close over the next minutes of action until Goodwin tied the game up at 62.

From there, the Huskies used the 8-0 run to seize control. They also didn't miss a shot of the rest of the way from that point going 5-for-5 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the line.

This win a is a resume building win. A road win against a ranked team in a place that is nearly impossible to win at.

Things won't get any easier for UConn either. They'll host the No. 18/14 Louisville Cardinals on Saturday night at 9 p.m. ESPN's College GameDay will be in house at Gampel Pavilion and broadcasting from Storrs, CT all day.

Another win against a ranked opponent and the Huskies could see themselves slide back into the top 25.

Video: UConn F Mamadou Diouf Taken By Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Second Round of MLS SuperDraft

After watching his UConn Huskies men's soccer teammate Andre Blake get drafted No. 1 overall by the Philadelphia Union, Senegal native Mamadou Diouf had to wait for his turn.

Vancouver Whitecaps FCIt took 29 more picks but with the 11th pick of the second round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft (No. 30 overall), the Vancouver Whitecaps FC took Diouf.

He finished up his UConn career as the No. 8 all-time leading scorer with 36 goals. His 2013 was injury-riddled but did see him score two goals and five assists and earn second team American Athletic Conference.

In his junior season, he was named to the All-Big East First Team and was 2012 NSCAA Second Team All-American after he scored 15 goals.
