Thursday’s Tiptoe Through Spring Training Camps

Here’s a look at some news from 10 randomly chosen teams from MLB spring training.

Brendan Donnelly won’t poke at Pokey Reese for what happened in 2004.

The Diamondbacks have no clue who their leadoff hitter is going to be this season.

New team. So what? Barry Zito gets the nod on opening day for the San Francisco Giants.

Kris Benson has a setback in his recovery and may have to have surgery now.

After pitching in Canada for three seasons, Kenny Ray hopes to stay in the big leagues.

Pedro Martinez played catch for the first time since his shoulder surgery.

Skip Schumaker is using his bat in his attempts to make the St. Louis Cardinals.

King Felix Hernandez says he is about 75% ready for the season right now.

Roger Clemens was at the Yankees game today and said he hasn’t decided whether or not he is pitching this season.

Brett Tomko has another talent besides pitching. He’s a painter. And it looks really good.

Robotic Beer Launcher

I came across an article on Yahoo that was really interesting. A former Duke graduate built himself a robotic beer launcher. You absolutely have to see this video.

How many people would buy this if it were on the market? It is probably one of the best inventions for the couch potato beer drinker.

Sox Spring Training News

It’s hard to get excited about things right now since after all it is spring training. But some good things are happening with the Sox. The starters are having early success. Lester is making his comeback. Dice-K may have thrown the gyroball the other day. Schilling is working on putting the changeup in his arsenal. He is also blogging. Papelbon is looking good right now. Tim Wakefield is working on his curveball. The closer position is still up in the air. Timlin will put his hat in that race on Saturday. So much going on at the Fort, I don’t know where to start.

As I wrote the other day, Jon Lester pitched in his first game since Aug 23, 2006. It is just a great story out of camp right now. It’s a shame that NESN didn’t pick up the broadcast of this game. Most of us here were left to watching the news highlights of him pitch. For everything he has been through since August, it had to have meant the world for him to retake the mound.

The Marlins hitters are saying that they experienced the gyroball when they faced Daisuke Matsuzaka in the game against the Red Sox on Tuesday.

“He threw four different pitches to me – a fastball, slider, gyro and curve,” said Stokes. On the gyro, “He threw it up and in. I could see it was obviously a ball right away. I’m thinking ‘Get out of the way.’ It kind of backs up on you.”

Hermida encountered the pitch three times. He affirmed Stokes’ version that it was a gyroball, saying it was somewhere between a changeup and split-fingered fastball.

“It’s got a good, hard and downward break but comes out with more speed than a changeup,” he said. “It comes out of the hand good and then it just dies on you.”

Hermida hesitated to use the word “gyroball” but he clearly had no idea what it was.

“I think that it is what it is, but it might not (be a gyro),” he said.

So does the gyroball really exist. The Sox pitching coach, John Farrell, says its the way he throws his changeup. Since the game wasn’t broadcast on any television outlet other than back to Japan, it will be hard to find evidence he threw it other than what the Marlins’ hitters are saying.

Curt Schilling said that he threw about 10 changeups in his last start against the Twins. He has thrown it in the past but has never really felt confident with it. Given his arsenal of pitches, a changeup will only make him better. And at his age, he might need any help he can get. Just kidding. He’s a great pitcher and gives it his all every time he is out on the mound. By the way, as I wrote earlier, Schilling has his own blog, 38 Pitches. It’s a great read.

Personally, I think it’s great that he is doing this. It will be really nice to see things from the player’s perspective. You see a lot of blogs by players that are moderated or run by MLB. This is not the case with Schilling’s blog. He has even opened up for comments.

Antonella Has Sung America & She’s Gonna Need Help Again

Well America, your favorite nude Idol has sung already on the show and I will just say this. She sucked. The judges agreed with me. Simon even said to her that she has gone as far as she could go because of the talent she is surrounded by.

That’s all on that front. I say don’t vote for her but that’s just my opinion. If your voting on looks, by all means vote for her. It’s just a matter of time before she returns home anyways.

Orange Eliminate Huskies For 3rd Straight Season

In front of a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden, Demetris Nichols and Eric Devendorf led the Syracuse Orange to a 78-65 victory over the UCONN Huskies in the first round of the Big East Tournament. Nichols had 28 points, including 7 three pointers, and Devendorf had 19 points, 15 in the 1st half, to lead the Orange. For UCONN, they were led by Jerome Dyson’s 21 points and A.J. Price’s 11 points.

It was a tale of two halves for the Huskies. They played inspired basketball in the 1st half and decided not to show up for the second half.

With the loss, UCONN’s season is probably finished. Their record was 17-13. According to NIT-ology, the Huskies are not one of the teams that will make the NIT. I do disagree with that as odds are if they made the NIT and were given a home game, it would be a good revenue maker for the NCAA. But I don’t make these decisions. I can only hope as a UCONN fan, a bitter one right now, that UCONN will be chosen.

Curt Schilling Has A New Place To Speak Out

Courtesy of the beautiful girls who run Babes Love Baseball, comes this tidbit of information. Curt Schilling is now a member of the blogosphere. 38 Pitches is Curt’s new way of speaking out.

I’ve been called everything from outspoken to blowhard to much, much worse. I believe those labels spring out of the fact that I care about the things people ask me as much as any other cause. I’ve never been a yes/no kind of guy, which probably hasn’t been received well by some. I don’t know that I’ll be changing my style, but I do know that getting ripped for something I say here will be getting ripped for something I actually said–with the entire contents of my comments included.

The best part about it all is that you can leave comments. He has even responded to a few. I have added the link to his blog in the blogroll so you can always get there from here.

Wednesday’s Half Marathon Around the NL

Here is a look at some of the news from the NL camps in spring training.

Tom Glavine is pursuing a milestone. The rest of the 40 somethings and him have to leave exhibition games early so they can get to the early-bird dinner specials.

The Phillies need to Tom Gordon to be healthy this season. No word on whether he will star in Flash Gordon 2.

The Nationals starting pitching isn’t looking good right now. At least the presidential race will gave the people of Washington, DC something to talk about this season.

Kyle Davies of the Braves struggled against the Nationals. The Nationals? I thought they sucked.

Joe Borchard and John Gall have been playing catchup at Marlins camp. They must be talking about the times when they were the Tree.

Izzy is struggling with his control early on in spring training. It must be hard to pitch with a cane.

Jared Burton of the Cincinnati Reds hopes to make the team. I wonder if he is related to Ward or Jeff Burton.

Vinny Rottino is trying to get 500 spring training at bats. He must be a plumber filling in all those cracks.

Freddy Sanchez hurt his knee in a spring training game. The Pirates are now thinking about canceling their season.

The Cubs president wants to win. Somewhere in the world, Steve Bartman is happy about this.

Hunter Pence is on the ride of his life at Astros camp. He must have been riding the rides this weekend Disney.

Woody Paige was asked to be nice to the Rockies. His appearances on Around the Horn must be getting to him.

David Wells tell tales of his African safari. No word on whether he was the one being hunted.

The Diamondbacks hitting coach is good at finding flaws in the player’s swings. That can’t be for the players psyche.

Chin-lung Hu is showing some speed at Dodgers camp. Who or Hu?

Bruce Bochy has moved Barry Bonds to the 3 spot in the lineup. He must be trying to get Barry more abs in his quest for the All-time Home Run title.

K-Fed Shaves Head; Britney Wants Another Baby

In support of his estranged wife Britney Spears, Kevin Federline decided to show some support for her and shave his head. At least as a guy, it can’t look as bad as on him as it does her.

Reportedly, there may be a reconciliation when Britney gets out of rehab. One of K-Fed’s friends had this to say:

“Britney has realized what a rock Kevin has been to her, and how out of control she has acted recently. She has been talking to Kevin every night for hours on the phone, telling him she still loves him. She just wants to be with him again, and thinks having another baby will seal their marriage.”

Also US Weekly is reporting that Britney is having a real tough time in rehab and may have tried to kill herself over the weekend.

Us Weekly claims her cousin Alli has all but moved into the clinic to help keep an eye on her but the family still don’t think it’ll be enough to keep Britney on track. A source told the magazine: “They hope that Britney will stay at Promises for a month, but they’re nervous she might not last that long.”

After Britney checked herself in the Promises rehabilitation center in Malibu, British tabloid News of the World reported that the staff at the clinic said she was put on “suicide watch” after she tried to hang herself with a bed sheet.

A friend of hers told the newspaper that right before attempting to take her life, she had the number 666 written on her head and ran around the clinic yelling: “I am the Antichrist!”

“She is still very vulnerable. Last Saturday she said she had the number 666 written onto her bald head. She was crying, and shouting, ‘I am the Antichrist!’ The clinic people just didn’t know what to do. Then she started screaming, ‘I’m a fake! I’m a fake!’ It must have been really frightening,” the News of the World quoted the pal, as saying.

“Later that night she tried to kill herself. She attached a sheet to a light and tied it around her neck. Paramedics were called, but luckily she was unhurt,” the pal added.

It’s just really sad to hear how far she has fallen. I really hope for hersake and her children’s sake, that she does get better. No child deserves to grow up without her mother.

Rutgers Shocks UCONN; Wins Big East Tournament

A 17-4 run by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights propelled them to a 55-47 victory over the UCONN women to give them their first Big East Tournament crown. This marks the fourth straight time that the regular season champ hasn’t won the postseason tournament title. It also ended UCONN’s 15 game winning streak.

Essence Carson led the way for the Scarlet Knights with 15 points. Matee Ajavon had 11 points and Kia Vaughn had 10 points. For UCONN, they were led by Charde Houston, who had 12 points. Renee Montgomery had 11 points while Tina Charles and Mel Thomas both added 8 points.

Notes and Observations:

  • The starting five was Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles, and Houston.
  • Charles spent the last 10 minutes of the first half with her ass planted on the bench because she got into foul trouble. Of the Huskies who saw significant time in this game, she shot the best making 3 of her 4 shots.
  • After scoring 20 points in the semifinals, Greene didn’t have one of her better games. She was 3 of 10 from the floor and finished with 6 points. She did have 10 rebounds.
  • Ajavon of Rutgers was a ballhog during the game. She was 4 of 22 from the floor.
  • UCONN as a team shot 20 of 58 (34%) from the floor. Rutgers wasn’t much better as they were 20 of 60 (33%).
  • UCONN committed 17 turnovers and Rutgers converted those into 23 points.
  • UCONN only got to the line 4 times, making all 4 of them. Coach Geno Auriemma had said for them to beat Rutgers, they had to get to the free throw line and not commit turnovers. As evidenced from the stat sheet, this wasn’t the case.
  • Greene, Montgomery, and Houston were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Just a really poor effort by the Huskies tonight. They had no offensive flow at all. They didn’t get to the line, they couldn’t hit a shot to save their lives. To me, it is probably a good thing that they lost now because it will make them more focused as they try to reach their goal of winning the NCAA championship.

I don’t expect this loss to hurt the Huskies chances of being a number 1 seed in the NCAA’s. They should still get a #1 seed and will most likely open up the 1st and 2nd round at the Hartford Civic Center.
