Former UConn Huskies and current Houston Astros OF George Springer picked up his first career walk-off hit on Friday night when he singled in Jose Altuve for the winning run against the Seattle Mariners.
Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/2/14

After being swept in a doubleheader yesterday, the Boston Red Sox look to get back on track tonight in the first game of a three-game set with the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the A’s television market, you can catch the game on Comcast SportsNet California. If you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game. And if you can’t catch the game on television, you can always listen on the 2014 Red Sox Radio Network.
Clay Buchholz takes to the Fenway mound for the third time in his sixth start of 2014. In his previous five starts, Buchholz is 1-2 with a 6.66 ERA. He last faced the A’s in 2012 when he picked up the win despite allowing six runs in 6.2 innings of work. He’s made six career starts against them and is 2-2 with a 7.90 ERA. Three of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 1-o with a 6.88 ERA.
Dan Straily will walk to the bump for the sixth in 2014. In his previous five starts, Straily is 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA. Tonight marks his first career start against the Red Sox and at Fenway Park.

Leon Tolksdorf To Transfer From UConn

STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore forward Leon Tolksdorf (Berlin, Germany) has decided to transfer from UConn and will continue his education and college basketball career at American University in Washington, D.C.
“Leon did everything we asked him to do at UConn, on the court and in the classroom,” Coach Kevin Ollie said. “He came to practice every day ready to work hard and push his teammates to improve. He was a big part of our winning the national championship. We wish him the best of luck as he moves on.”
“I have enjoyed two unforgettable years at UConn and I am proud to have been part of the Husky family,” Tolksdorf said. “I never thought I would call Storrs a second home, but being at UConn and knowing my teammates has had a huge impact on me. At the same time, I am also excited to accept this new challenge in my life.”
Tolksdorf, a 6-8 forward, appeared in 24 games for UConn, averaging 1.5 points and 0.8 rebounds in 5.3 minutes per game.

Tom Caron Will Be Red Sox In-Game Reporter Tonight
This just in from NESN:
NESN’s Red Sox studio host Tom Caron will switch roles to serve as the Red Sox in-game reporter tonight. Adam Pellerin will host NESN’s pre and post-game shows tonight and will be joined by Hall of Famer Jim Rice. Tonight’s Red Sox coverage begins at 5:30 pm with Friday Night Fenway.
Caron was the first person to serve as an in-game reporter for NESN, serving in this role during the 2002 & 2003 seasons. In 2004 Caron moved into the studio and has served as NESN’s primary Red Sox studio host since that time.
NESN continues to search for a full-time Red Sox reporter. The network has been rotating several NESN Sports Today reporters into that role during the first month of the season.
Video: Rays Sweep Double Dip From Red Sox

For all that bitching that Joe Maddon and the Tampa Bay Rays did, you’d think they’d be happy with the fact they swept the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Instead, Maddon decided to take a cheap shot at the Red Sox visiting clubhouse thus earning a-hole No. 1 status.
Proud of our boys . All the convoluted stuff yesterday, then spending all day in Fenway's diminutive clubhouse made it tough to win a split.
— Joe Maddon (@RaysJoeMaddon) May 2, 2014
The Rays picked up the win in Game 1 of the doubleheader 2-1 while winning the second game 6-5. The first game was not without controversy as the Red Sox saw another replay go against them when there was clear enough visual evidence that Dustin Pedroia was safe with the tying run.
Instead, he was out and the Rays went on to win.
In the second game, Yunel Escobar homered off of Koji Uehara in the 9th and the Red Sox couldn’t push across Shane Victorino to tie in the bottom half against Grant Balfour.
Just one of those days the Red Sox would like to forget about and move forward tonight against the Oakland Athletics.
