Matsuzaka Has Hitters Wondering What’s Coming

If you’re a hitter about to face Daisuke Matsuzaka, you have to wonder what pitch is coming. He has at least 6 pitches that we know, only because Pirates 1B Adam LaRoche asked Jason Varitek and he said he needs to use two hands when he calls a pitch for Dice-K.

Dice-K left many impressions with the hitters he faced during spring training. This is what some of the hitters he faced during spring training had to say:

“I saw the gyroball. It’s like a split-finger, downward angle, maybe runs in a little bit,” said Jason Stokes, who took the pitch for a 3-2 count before striking out on a slider.

“I’m glad he’s in the American League,” said Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez. I told him, ‘Come on, man? You come here from Japan and you’re stealing my hits. He’s good. His slider is good.”

“I thought his fastball was sneaky quick,” Dan Uggla said. “This [was] his first time out. I imagine he is only going to get better.”

“His slider is nasty,” said Miguel Olivo, who claimed it broke in two directions — down and over. “With men on, he works faster.”

“He’s got good stuff,” O’s second baseman Brian Roberts told The Baltimore Sun. “Shoot, you don’t give guys $50 million for nothing. He threw everything for strikes at different times in the count. He mixed it up. He’s here for a reason.”

“I don’t know what I hit,” shortstop Miguel Tejada told the Sun. “I just know that ball moves. I don’t know if it’s the gyroball or a slider he threw me. He’s pretty good.”

“I put a pretty good swing on it and made contact,” Jason Dubois told the Sun. “That’s all I was trying to do. He’s got a pretty good slider. He’s a pretty tough pitcher. We just got to him in that one inning.”

“It was the last thing on my mind,” Jon Knott said in the Sun. “I [had] been pressing a little bit the last couple days. I was just trying to get a knock.”

“He’s not the least bit shy about throwing any pitch in any given count, which suggests how much confidence that he has in throwing all of his pitches for strikes,” said Pirates manager Jim Tracy. “If you have the capability to do that, you’re going to keep hitters off balance for a very long time.”

“I was impressed,” said Adam LaRoche, the only Pirate to record a hit off Matsuzaka. “He had pretty good command with all his pitches. Obviously, he had a very good changeup, a slider. He must have a dozen pitches. I was asking [Sox catcher Jason] Varitek how many, and he said, ‘I don’t know, but I have to use both hands to give signs.'”

“He’s worth every penny,” Pirates leadoff hitter Chris Duffy told the Boston Herald. “He throws every pitch imaginable and throws them all for strikes. With most pitchers, when you get in a hole against them, you at least have an idea what pitch they are going to throw to try to finish you off. With this guy, there is no sense sitting on a particular pitch because he throws everything.”

“We didn’t get any hits, so obviously he did something,” Reds right fielder Ken Griffey said. “It’s a matter of seeing him a couple of times and reacting. The first time that you see anybody, he has the advantage over you. But he’s a guy who thinks his way through the order and knows what he wants to do.”

I don’t think he had his best stuff today,” said left fielder Adam Dunn, before catching himself. “What am I saying? I’ve never seen the guy before in my life. But from what I saw today, it was as advertised. He didn’t have very good location today. It probably made it a little easier on us. But he still got away with no runs and no hits. He did what he had to do.”

“Daisuke was funky, for one thing,” manager Jerry Narron said. “He throws a lot of different speeds. He throws a lot of different pitches at different speeds. He’s got pretty good command.”

Matsuzaka will be making his MLB debut on Thursday and the Royals are another team that hasn’t seen Dice-K pitch other than on video.

“I don’t know much about him,” said Royals manager Buddy Bell. “I’ve seen him on video. I’ve seen that he has great stuff with great command. We’re hoping he doesn’t have that great stuff and great command. If he does, it is going to be tough, as it is with every pitcher.”

Hopefully after his self proclaimed struggles towards the end of spring training, Matsuzaka has found what was wrong and made the adjustments. Just as long as his first pitch isn’t a home run given up like fellow countryman Hideki Okajima’s was, I think things will go just fine.

Big Papi’s New Book Part 2

I have a special treat for all you Boston Red Sox fans out there in the greatest nation in the world, Red Sox Nation. I was asked by the fine people at Holtzbrinck Publishers to take a look at and review David “Big Papi” Ortiz’s new book entitled, ‘Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits’ which he wrote with Tony Massarotti. The book will be hitting bookstores in approximately 2 weeks on April 17th and can be bought at bookstores nationwide or preordered at Amazon.com. There is even a Spanish version as well.

Once I get my copy of the book, I will be reading and reviewing it here on the site. I also hope to be able to get a few extra copies to give away. I won’t know that until they ship my book out. If I do receive the books, I will be giving them away on our radio show, The Hits Keep Coming…, on a future episode. We would probably do some type of Big Papi trivia contest and the winner would receive a copy of the book. I will have more on this once I know if this will be possible.

So for the next three days, we will be taking a look at excerpts from the book. If you would like to read part 2, click the more button below. To see part 1, you can click here.

Wednesday’s Half Marathon Around The NL

My Playboy Bunny-esque friend Sooze, over at Babes Love Baseball has a video from the Reds opening day that shows the worst first pitch ever.

A healthy El Duque is all the Mets needed to defeat the Cardinals on Tuesday night.

The Braves open the season with 18 of their first 28 games against division foes.

Platoons at 3B and LF will be the norm for the Brewers to start the season.

Chris Carpenter will miss at least one start for the Cardinals with elbow inflammation.

Now that the Cubs are being sold at the end of the season, could Mark Cuban be interested in buying the team.

Diamondbacks rookie Micah Owings is psyched for his start against the Nationals on Friday.

Dodgers SS Rafael Furcal is about 1-2 weeks away from returning from the injury he suffered in a collision on March 22nd.

Someone should tell Barry Bonds that the Giants pay him for his bat, not his base stealing ability.

Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez is still trying to figure out what roles his bullpen guys will have.

Cristian Guzman and Nook Logan will miss at least 2 weeks for the Nationals after suffering injuries on opening day.

The Padres rewarded their new skipper Bud Black with a win on opening day.

Michael Bourn wants to show the Phillies he deserves to be in the big leagues.

The Pirates first pick in the 2006 draft, Brad Lincoln, is out for at least a year after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Rockies 2B Kaz Matsui failed to homer after doing so on the past three opening days.

Fenway Opening Day Festivities

If you are one of the lucky ones who will be in be in attendance on Opening Day at Fenway next Tuesday, you will witness a myriad of events. I am one of those lucky ones. This is what the Red Sox have planned for Opening Day.

The Red Sox will be honoring the “Impossible Dream” 1967 Boston Red Sox team. Over 20 members of that team will be introduced then they will each throw out a first pitch. Also, Harry Connick, Jr. will be performing ‘America the Beautiful’. The Green Mountain Boys of the 158th Fighter Wing from the Vermont Air National Guard will be performing a flyover over beautiful Fenway Park. And last but not least, Johnny Pesky will conclude the ceremonies by saying those famous two words before a baseball game, “Play Ball!”

Honestly, I am psyched for the game. Josh Beckett is scheduled to be on the hill, the 1967 team is getting honored, and I will be there to witness it all.

Here is a list of the players from the 1967 team that are scheduled to be in attendance:

Manager Dick Williams
Catcher Jerry Moses
Infielder Mike Andrews
Pitcher Dan Osinski
Pitcher Gary Bell
Infielder Rico Petrocelli
Pitcher Dennis Bennett
Pitcher Billy Rohr
Pitcher Darrell Brandon
Catcher Mike Ryan
Pitcher Galen Cisco
Pitcher Jose Santiago

Outfielder Ken Harrelson
Pitcher Lee Stange
Infielder Dalton Jones

Former major league pitcher Ugueth Urbina has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of five workers on his family’s ranch. Urbina is still thankful he doesn’t have to play for the Cubs. No one was actually killed in the incident – and we thought Urbina was a closer.

Yao Ming’s basketball jersey is not among the top sellers in China, mainly because all those jerseys look alike.

The NBA and the Cleveland Cavaliers have said that LeBron James will no longer be allowed to have his son sit on the bench. David Wesley is thrilled, as he will get his seat back. James also just finished building a massive house that includes a theater, bowling alley, casino and barber shop. The house is so cool, you almost forget the front door is located in Cleveland. When James retires, he can sell the place and buy a studio apartment in New York.

Turning to college, the son of North Carolina State basketball coach Sidney Lowe faces more than 20 criminal charges from two separate attacks. Authorities predict he could be sentenced to 25 years on the Cincinnati Bengals.

Former Bears LB Steve McMichael has been named the head coach of the Chicago Slaughter, a seven-man indoor football team. McMichael said that it’s one notch below arena football, which makes it three notches below Rock-Paper-Scissors.

And four men have been arrested after part of a man’s ear was bitten off during a Greece/Turkey soccer brawl. Mike Tyson has since apologized. This kind of soccer hooliganism is more common in England, since a human ear is a nice alternative to British cooking.

Fever Pitch

I ran across something on another blog that was pretty funny to me. Chad Gramling over at Chad Gramling’s Baseball Blog has a similar ritual before Opening Day that I do. He spends a part of his day watching ‘Mr Baseball’ while I watch ‘Fever Pitch’.

It’s funny to me because I only started my ritual of watching ‘Fever Pitch’ last year because it was the first real Hollywood movie involving the Red Sox. I am sure someone will correct me on that. If you don’t know me, you don’t know that I am a huge Red Sox fan and sports fan in general and do whatever I can not to miss a game. No I don’t have season tickets but I do try to attend 1-2 games a year. And if I am home, I will watch the game. If I miss it for any reason, I will watch the Red Sox in 2 on NESN. Or if I happen to be driving, I will throw the game on the radio.

This year, I will be attending opening day at Fenway (April 10th) with my friend and I will also be sitting atop the Green Monster for the last game of the year with my mother. My mother had complained a few years back when I sat on the Green Monster in 2004 and 2005. I don’t think the first time I went she would have really wanted to come since it was for a friend’s bachelor party. The 2005 trip was with some of my friends.

Anyways, even though ‘Fever Pitch’ is a romantic comedy, it really takes a look at the life of a crazed Red Sox fan. While my life is not as crazy as Jimmy Fallon’s character in the movie, I can see similarities. His closet is similar to a drawer I have in my dresser. It is filled with every Red Sox t-shirt I own. There’s too many of them to even count. The one thing I am envious of is that he has season tickets near the Sox dugout.

It’s Opening Day 2007 people. Skip school, call out of work. This day only comes once a year.
