Red Sox Weather Storm; Beat Rangers 10-6

After a two hour rain delay, the Rangers and Red Sox took to the field and played some beisbol. Unfortunately, it was an ugly game for both teams. Julio Lugo and Jason Varitek both drove in 2 runs each and Daisuke Matsuzaka went 5 nauseous innings as the Sox took the first of three in Texas by a final score of 10-6.

Dice-K’s first inning started out a little shaky. He walked Kenny Lofton to lead off the inning and then allowed a single by Michael Young. He then recovered a little as he induced a double play that went thru his legs hit by Mark Texiera. He proceeded to strike out Slammin’ Sammy Sosa on a fastball to end the threat.

After being set down in order in the 1st inning, the Red Sox got to Brandon McCarthy for 4 runs. McCarthy walked Manny, J.D. Drew, and Mike Lowell to start the inning on 16 pitches. Varitek ran the count full before hitting a sacrifice fly bringing in Manny. Coco Crisp, just like ‘Tek did, ran the count full before being walked loading up the bases for AROD’s new best friend, Dustin Pedroia. Pedroia didn’t disappoint the Fenway Faithful in Arlington as he hit a single to right field that brought in 2 more runs making it 3-0 Red Sox. Lugo then hit into a fielder’s choice to right field. Yes, I said right field. Slammin’ Sammy dropped the ball like it was hot but was able to get Crisp at second for a force out. However, Drew came across to score making it 4-0 good guys. All four guys he walked came around to score in the inning.

The Sox threatened again in the third inning. Big Papi reached on a beat the shift single. He hit off the end of the bat and with the shift on no one was at third base. Manny than got him over to third base on a double. Drew then hit a broken bat grounder to second base. Manny thinking Big Papi was running, started towards third and realized he couldn’t go there. Meanwhile, Ian Kinsler had gotten the ball and beat Manny back to the bag and tagged him out. McCarthy than got Lowell to ground into an inning ending double play.

Meanwhile, Dice-K cruised through the second and third innings, allowing just one walk. A big scare for Red Sox Nation after the inning when the coaching and medical staff, along with a few players were seen surrounding Dice-K. He then grabbed his stuff and went to clubhouse. He returned to the dugout while the Sox were at bat and looked like he had tossed his cookies like a college student would after a heavy night of drinking cheap alcohol.

Whether or not the “illness” affected him or not remains to be seen. But he had another one of those forgettable innings again. Teixiera lead off with a triple and came around to score on a Slammin’ Sammy double. Sometimes, I dislike it when an announcer says he owns this team or say something to jinx a player. Well Don and Jerry were saying how Frank Catalanotto loves Red Sox pitching. Catalanotto then blasted a Dice-K offering into the seats, cutting the Red Sox lead to 4-3. Dice-K then got the next two batters out before allowing a single to Gerald Laird. Former Red Sox utility guy and New Haven Raven, Ramon Vazquez planted a Dice-K pitch into the seats in right field making the score 5-4 Texas Rangers.

Within 4 batters in the 5th inning, the Red Sox regained the lead at 6-5. Lugo led off the inning and was retired. Youk then hit a single and came around on a Big Papi double. Manny brought Big Papi in on a single and just like that the Sox were back in front.

Dice-K struggled a little in the home half of the 5th inning as Young laced a double and Teixiera walked. However, Dice-K got Sosa to ground into a double play. He got his revenge on Catalanotto when he struck him out swinging. At this point, you could tell whatever was bothering him had taken it’s toll. Dice-K didn’t come back out for the 6th inning. It was later announced that he was suffering from nausea.

All totaled, Dice-K went 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks and he struck out 6. He threw only 85 pitches.

The Red Sox beat up Frank Francisco for 4 runs in the 6th inning. Lowell drew a walk and came around on a Varitek triple that got lodged under the security guard’s seat. Crisp brought in Tek with a double that barely got out of the infield (infield was in, and trickled off the glove of Kinsler into short right field). Shockingly, the Red Sox played a little small ball when Pedroia sacrificed Crisp over to third. Lugo then brought Crisp home on a single and proceeded to steal second with Youk at the plate. Youk brought Lugo in with a single of his own, making it 10-5 Sox.

Texas got one run back in the 7th off the combination of Javier Lopez and Brendan Donnelly. Lopez walked Kenny Lofton to start the inning. Donnelly came into the game and got Young to fly out. With Teixiera at the plate, Lofton stole second and went to third when Tex flew out. Donnelly uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Lofton to score making it 10-6 Sox. Sosa flew out to end the inning.

Sox didn’t do anything in the 8th or 9th innings. Hideki “Darkman” Okajima came on for the Sox in the 8th and set down the side in order.

Jonathan Papelbon came on in another non-save situation and set down the side in order as well.

Carlee Wines Case Update

Shame on me for not posting an update last month when the cases went to court. So let me update as to what happened in court in April and then share an email exchange I had with a writer from the Hartford Courant on Friday.

Back on April 26th, Kara Satalin, Anthony Alvino and Michelle Hall were in court on their charges stemming from the death of Carlee Wines when the vehicle Alvino was driving struck Wines. She died from the injuries she suffered in the accident on January 20th.

Hall was in the passenger’s seat when Alvino struck Wines and she convinced Alvino to leave the scene of the crime.

Satalin was charged with providing Alvino and Hall alcohol. She allegedly used a fake ID to purchase the alcohol. Alvino was charged with misconduct with a motor vehicle resulting in death, evading responsibility and tampering with physical evidence. Hall was faces charges of aiding and abetting evading responsibility, conspiracy to commit evading responsibility, and third-degree hindering prosecution.

Two others were charged with providing Alvino and Hall alcohol at a party on the UCONN campus the night of the incident. Ken Rusterholz and Matt Gallo face charges of providing alcohol to minors.

In court, Satalin applied for accelerated rehabilitation and a hearing was scheduled on the application for May 25th.

Accelerated rehabilitation is available to people accused of non-violent crimes who do not have criminal records and who a Superior Court judge finds are not likely to commit another crime.

Alvino’s case was also continued to May 25th and Hall’s case was continued to June 8th.

On Friday afternoon, I was looking online for an update to what had happened in court. I didn’t see anything at all so I decided to email a writer from the Hartford Courant, David Owens. Much to my surprise, he got back to me fairly quick and told me the following.

David Owens: The cases against Satalin and Alvino were continued to a later date. Satalin’s hearing will probably go forward next month. I expect Gallo and Rusterholz to seek accelerated rehabilitation as well.

As for Hall and Alvino, it will probably be a while.

A very special thanks to David Owens for answering my questions and providing an update.

The students of Manalapan High School in New Jersey will be sponsoring a 5 mile run to celebrate the memory of Carlee Wines. For more information, on this head over to the Carlee Wines Memorial site.

Steinbrenner Puts Cashman, Not Torre On The Hot Seat

All I have to say is it’s about damn time.

While I am a Red Sox fan, I respect Joe Torre as a manager. He has been able to withstand the wrath of George and the New York media since 1996. He is the longest tenured manager under Steinbrenner’s reigns.

“He’s (Cashman) on a big hook,” Steinbrenner told the AP. “He wanted sole authority. He got it. Now he’s got to deliver.”

First off, what is surprising to me is that Big Stein actually made the quote to a reporter. Usually anything Steinbrenner has to say comes through his puppet Howard Rubenstein. Secondly, I am glad Steinbrenner finally came out and said something on this.

How can anyone blame Torre for the injuries the Yankees have suffered, Jason Giambi’s off the field troubles now, or the fact that Brian Cashman did nothing to get any pitching help in the offseason. This is a team that wasn’t expecting to have to use top pitching prospect, Phillip Hughes til next season. While he pitched well enough, he got injured, which could have happened at anytime but he is now losing time to further develop his skills.

Steinbrenner also gave Torre a vote of confidence, which in most sports, usually is a kiss of death for a manager or coach. In this case, I think Torre will probably be manager for at least the rest of the season with Indiana’s native son, Don Mattingly, waiting in the wings to take over. He also spoke out on the Virginia Tech massacre as the Yanks honored the victims before Wednesday night’s game with the Sox. He also spoke out on Giambi’s comments.

“He should have kept his mouth shut,” Steinbrenner said. “The matter is in the hands of the baseball Commissioner.”

I guess Giambi never watched Seinfeld. He would have known not to get on Big Stein’s bad side.

Ervin Santana Dislikes The Los Angeles Media….

If you're a reporter, I don't like youor is it the Anaheim media or the Los Angeles of Anaheim media.

Ervin Santana blew up yesterday at reporters after he was shellacked in his latest road start. He didn’t like it when a reporter asked him what he expects if he get’s demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake City.

“No,” he snapped. “What kind of question is that?”

Santana hasn’t been exactly good on the road this season or for that matter in his career. When the LAAofA are on the road this season, Santana is 0-5 in 6 starts and sports a 9.30 road ERA. On the contrary, when he plays at his own ballpark, he is 3-1 in 4 starts and has a 2.33 home ERA.

Manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels’ goal remains “to fix him.” Scioscia did not directly answer the question of whether that might be better accomplished in triple A, but he indicated Santana would not have all summer to work through his struggles.

“This isn’t going to be an instructional league for Ervin,” he said.

Santana’s next two starts are scheduled at home, and the Angels could take advantage of off days to limit him to one road start in the next 30 days. Scioscia said it would not be practical to constantly juggle the rotation so Santana would not start on the road.

“That’s dysfunctional,” Scioscia said. “You’re going to pitch him once every three weeks? You guys are making this a home-road issue.”

Scioscia agreed that Santana’s home and road stats are “like night and day” but argued the issue is consistency, in locating pitches and getting ahead of hitters.

It’s probably not a good idea to piss off the media in your home market because more than likely one of them will probably find fault with anything you do (CHB).

Rocket: One More Start In The Minors??

TraderIt is looking Roger Clemens will probably make one more start in the minors on Monday night in Scranton before returning to the Evil Empire for a possible matchup with Curt Schilling on June 3rd at Fenway Park.

Several Yankees officials, all who remain anonymous, think it would be best for Clemens to get one more start under his belt in the minors due to his struggles on Wednesday night. He went 5 1/3 innings in his latest outing, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs, 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. He also uncorked a wild pitch and hit a Portland SeaDog’s batter. He also threw 102 pitches in this outing compared to 58 in the first.

Personally, I know the Yanks need him right now but there’s a reason why spring training is 6 weeks long and why most most pitcher’s have 4 or 5 starts. Roger is trying to accomplish all that in 2 starts is absurd. I am sure he was working out before this but then again most pitchers are working out before spring training. It’s not like Roger is 25 anymore. I think for his health, he’d be better served making one more start in the minors.

With the way the rotation sits for the Red Sox, Curt Schilling, as I mentioned above, looks to be on the hill June 3rd. Interestingly enough, that is an ESPN Sunday Night Game of the Week. I am sure the execs at the Worldwide Leader are frothing at the mouths for this matchup.

Update: Roger will in fact make one more start in the minors on Monday night. He will then rejoin the Yankees on June 2 or 3 at Fenway.

WTNH Announces New Deal With ESPN Regional

I apologize for not posting this earlier as it is baseball season and most of my focus seems to be towards the Boston Red Sox. But as the blog name suggests, SOX & Dawgs, the Dawgs part refers to the UCONN Huskies football and basketball programs.

Last week, WTNH-8 announced that it had reached a deal with ESPN Regional for the rights to televise UCONN Men’s Basketball and Football games for the next 3 seasons. WTNH’s sister station, WCTX-59 is also included in the deal.

The deal calls for both stations to broadcast 12 UCONN Men’s Basketball games along with the 12 game Big East Game of the Week package. UCONN could be included in that as well. The football portion of the deal calls for them to broadcast a 10 games in Big East game of the week package.

ESPN Regional has the rights to any Big East games that aren’t broadcast nationally by ESPN or CBS.

For me, it doesn’t really matter which station they are on as long as I am able to see every game. What I would love to see is a network similar to what teams have like the Sox do with NESN and the Yanks with YES. That way, we could get our own announcers and get a little more insight into the happenings of the teams. The Big 10 has it’s own TV network, it’s time for the Big East to do the same.
