In The Red Zone – 10/23

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick conducts an interview segment each Monday on WEEI’s “The Big Show” with host Glen Ordway, Pete Sheppard and former NFL players Steve DeOssie (who played for Belichick when they were with the NY Giants) and Fred Smerlas. He generally talks about the game and answers questions from the gang an even has a question or two for them as well.

According to Belichick defensive end Richard Seymour and wide receiver Troy Brown may start practicing this week as they work towards coming off the PUP list. The team has until Week 9 to activate them or place them on the IR.

Belichick also congratulated the Red Sox for making the World Series during his 11:45 Monday meeting with the local media.

QuarterbackTom Brady who last week tied a team record in Dallas with 5 TD passes broke it with 6 in Miami on Sunday. He now has 27 TD passes just one shy of his career high.

Miami’s Jason Taylor, last years NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was asked after the game about whether he thought New England was trying to run up the score.

“That’s what you should do,” said Taylor. “You shouldn’t be conservative and sit back just because you have a lead. They ran their offense, and they took Tommy out for a while and put him back in because of the interception. But that’s what the game is. If you don’t want people to run the score up then stop them. I have no problem with it.”

Kudos to Taylor who obviously gets it unlike others through out the league.

Running back Laurence Maroney returned to action on Sunday but was limited to 6 carries as the Patriots went with more of a pass oriented offense against the Dolphins. It also saved on Maroney as he works himself back into game shape after missing 3 weeks with a groin injury.

Safety Rodney Harrison got a sack of Cleo Lemon on Sunday giving him a career total of 30.5 for his career. He also became the first player in NFL history to have 30 sacks and 30 interceptions. Harrison should one day find himself enshrined in Canton OH.

A Look Back @ Red Sox vs Rockies in 2007

vs

Here is a look at what happened between the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies in 2007 as written here on SOX & Dawgs by Steve and myself.

June 12, 2007 Red Sox 2 Rockies 1:

Tim Wakefield was solid for 8 innings on Tuesday night and a sacrifice fly from J.D. Drew got the job done as the Red Sox beat the Rockies 2-1. The win was Wake’s 6th of the season and it also makes the Red Sox the only team with four 6-win pitchers.

June 13, 2007 Rockies 12 Red Sox 2:

One bad pitch from Curt Schilling changed the complexion of last night’s game. Otherwise, it could have been a different result. The Boys from Beantown are scuffling a bit on offense these days. Josh Beckett takes the hill tonight before the Barry Bonds circus comes to town. Let’s take a look at what the Boston area and Denver media has to say about last night’s game.

June 14, 2007 Rockies 7 Red Sox 1:

Garrett Atkins and Kaz Matsui each had three hits and Jeff Francis pitched 5 shut out innings as the Rockies beat up the Red Sox, 7-1 at Fenway Park. Atkins fell a triple short of a cycle as he singled in the first, hit a grand slam in the third and doubled in the fifth.

Red Sox/Rockies World Series Notes – 10/23

Red Sox vs Rockies for all the marbles

I am sure we all needed a nice day of rest yesterday after staying up late on Sunday night to watch the Red Sox victory and celebration. The Sox worked out at Fenway Park on Monday afternoon in anticipation of Wednesday’s Game 1. The pitching matchup for Game 1 is set. It will be Jeff Francis vs Josh Beckett. That’s about all that is confirmed right now. The rest of the rotation and roster will probably be determined tomorrow or at the latest Wednesday morning when it has to be in the league office. Rumors are that Tim Wakefield may start Game 2. I’d have to think we won’t see Eric Gagné on the roster. If you were wondering how Coco Crisp was feeling, he’s doing fine after crashing into the wall on the final out of Sunday’s ALCS game 7. If you’re trying to get tickets to the games in Colorado, tickets will go on sale again at 10 AM MDT (12 PM EDT). So while we await today’s press conferences and hopefully an announcement of the pitching rotation and roster, let’s take a look at the headlines from the Boston area and Denver media on this Soxtober morning.

Fun With Photos

I was bored late last night and was looking at some photos from Sunday night’s celebration and a few caught my eye. In the first one,I filled in what I thought were Theo Epstein’s thoughts.

Theo Epstein lost in thought

In this second one, it’s your opportunity to provide a caption for the photo.

Paw Prints – Gridiron News

SOX & Dawgs - Paw Prints

Scott LutrusUConn redshirt freshman linebacker Scott Lutrus picked up a weekly honor from the Big East Conference as he was named defensive player of the week. In UConn’s 21-17 win over Louisville, Lutrus had 18 tackles and 1 interception. For a redshirt freshman I am quite impressed with his play. He was starting because of an injury to Ryan Henegan and has given head coach Randy Edsall a great effort each time out to keep the starting spot.

In other football news, the Big East Conference announced that UConn’s game on November 3rd against Rutgers at Renstchler Field will start at 7:15 PM and be carried on ESPNU.

Big East Conference commissioner Mike Tranghese spoke out on the mistake on the missed fair catch call in the 3rd quarter of the UConn-Louisville game.

Tranghese told Jurich the officials had made a “terrible” mistake. Tranghese took action against the referee who missed the call, but wouldn’t elaborate on the penalty.

“The bad part is I can’t change the call,” Tranghese said Monday.

It was a horrible non-call and obviously changed the game. But UConn is now 6-1 and moves on to play South Florida on Saturday afternoon at the Rent.

The Timing of Byrd-Gate

I am sure that you like myself was wondering why on the biggest game of the season for the Cleveland Indians was the report released by the San Francisco Chronicle. The report stated that Byrd had purchased almost $25,000 in HGH.

So I took it upon myself to find out and I emailed Lance Williams of the San Francisco Chronicle to find out. Much to my surprise I received a response to my question and with permission I post the answer.

SOX & Dawgs: Is there any reasoning as to why this article was released today with the Indians playing the Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS tonight.

Lance Williams: The story was published after we had finished reporting it, and after it became apparent that Paul was not going to answer any of our questions. We made multiple attempts to interview Paul on Friday and Saturday. He refused to talk to us, as did his agent. The Indians also declined to comment.

Yesterday in his press conference, Byrd stated that the story could have been published a few days earlier.

So who is right here? Do we take the word of Byrd or the media? Later in the interview, Byrd stated that he took it with the awareness that MLB knew about it. Here is a look at snippets of the impromptu presser.

.So why then is there a report that MLB didn’t know of his use and wants to question him.

In my humble opinion, it appears as though the authors of the article gave Byrd enough opportunities to make a statement and he didn’t. With no one wanting to comment, they published the story.

If Byrd proves to have taken this stuff without the consent of MLB, what does that say about his integrity?

Hat tipto Lance Williams from the San Francisco Chronicle.
