Get Your Madonna Face

With Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees coming to town this weekend, we all know that the Boston Red Sox faithful are going to be all over him for his alleged relationship with Madonna.

So I thought I’d do my part since I won’t be at the game by helping out my fellow members of Red Sox Nation with a mask they can use.

CSTV Gets New Name

CBS is taking over CSTV and will rename the network CBS College Sports Network, the change takes effect March 1st.

new logoCBS Corporation acquired CSTV, in January 2006 for $325 million, and last month announced the integration of its business and programming operations into the CBS Sports division. Its many platforms for distribution include CSTV, CSTV XXL and All Access as well as satellite television and radio, in-flight entertainment, wireless networks and more. All will now be part of the CBS College Sports Network brand.

Among the acquisition’s is the CSTV.com website.

“CSTV has developed a significant online presence within the collegiate sports community, and CBSSports.com has become one of the leading destinations for professional sports coverage,” said Jason Kint, Senior Vice President and General Manager of CBSSports.com. “These are two world class operations with complementary audiences, and, taken together, will give CBS Sports the most powerful and varied user profile in all sports media.”

The change to CBS College Sports Network, which will include the full integration of the CBS Sports on air style and graphics, follows the highly successful rebranding of the former CBS Sportsline.com to CBSSports.com last August. In the month following that change, CBSSports.com earned a 27 percent increase in users giving the site the highest growth rate among major sports sites.

As part of CBS taking over CSTV the network will place an emphasis for developing original programming for the cable network. Anchoring that change will be the show College Sports Tonight, a 60-minute news and information program looking at the day in college sports and previewing upcoming events.

This move gives CBS something FOX and ABC have already had a cable sports network. FOX operates the FSN, FOX Sports Network and FSC, FOX College Sports. ABC has the ESPN family of networks which include ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News and ESPNU.

Former Patriot and current Giants backup offensive lineman Grey Ruegamer has an unusual “hobby”, he castrates lambs with his teeth. Yes you read that correctly.Ruegamer

“You pull them out with your teeth, spit them in a bucket, next one,” he said. “There was other work that had to get done, so we had to hurry with that and move onto the next thing. It’s just a little lamb. It’s not a big animal. I have pictures.”

I would not want to be in the bottom of the pile with this guy that’s for sure. Yeeoooww!!!

On the field after the running play the lineman from both sides are all stacked up and the officials hear a grown man crying out in pain as they try to separate the players. As they pull apart the bodies there’s Giants lineman Grey Ruegamer with an opponents testicles in his mouth and he’s biting down hard.

The referee starts yelling like Ruegamer is the family dog.

“Grey drop it! Drop it! Drop it now Grey!”

Red Sox News & Notes – 1/29 Part Deux

Red Sox News & Notes @ SOX & Dawgs

Terry Francona is a popular guy these days in the college ranks. Just a few days after he was the guest of honor at the Virginia Cavaliers Step Up to the Plate banquet, Francona will be speaking at fund-raiser for the Utah Utes baseball team.

How did the Utes manage to get Francona to come out and speak? Utah baseball coach Bill Kinneberg and Francona were teammates at the University of Arizona.

“He’s been very special for me and my family for the last 30 years,” Kinneberg said. “He’s my son’s godfather, so there’s a lot of deep and cherished friendship with our families. It’s very special to have him here again.”

This is the fourth time the Utes have held the annual fundraiser. Francona was their first guest of honor, followed by Hall of Famers Cal Ripken, Jr and Brooks Robinson.

Did you know that Josh Beckett knows him some math? Red Sox pitcher Craig Breslow was on hand at a Danbury, CT middle school to talk to students about math.

He later helped a friend, Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett, win a bet against catcher Doug Mirabelli. Breslow calculated how many times a baseball spins when it’s thrown 90 miles an hour from the pitcher’s mound to the home plate.

I wonder how close Beckett got. Breslow, if you didn’t know, is a graduate of Yale University with a degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry. So needless to say, he’s one of the smarter players in the organization.

We start where we’ve started most of these this season, with head coach Bill Belichick and his weekly visit with “The Big Show” on WEEI in Boston. This week the interview takes place on radio row at the Super Bowl with Glenn Ordway, Pete Sheppard, Steve DeOssie and Fred Smerlas.

The temporary restraining order against Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss has been extended until March 28th.

The temporary order requires Moss to stay at least 500 feet from Washington. No criminal charge has been brought. Washington, 35, alleged they had been in an “intimate relationship” since 1997.

Moss has denied the accusation.

His accuser Rachelle Washington has a new attorney, Darrell Thompson he replaces David McGill. A spokesperson for Thompson confirmed the change while McGill would not return phone calls seeking comment.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady finally addressed his ankle injury on Sunday evening.

“It’s feeling good. I’ll be ready to go,” Brady said

Brady hurt his ankle at some point during the AFC Championship game against San Diego on January 21st. Brady hasn’t practiced since then although he has been jogging and throwing the ball as well as getting treatment on his ankle. The injury is not serious enough to keep the MVP from playing in Super Bowl XLII against the New York Giants.

“I’m not concerned about how it’s going to affect my play,” he said. “This won’t keep me out.”

Red Sox News & Notes – 1/29

Well Jim Rice has finally made the Hall of Fame, although not the one that he really wants to be a part of. The International League has decided to bring back it’s Hall of Fame and will elect 27 members as part of their 125th anniversary celebrations.

Jim RiceThe International League announced on Monday that Rice, former PawSox and Red Sox manager Joe Morgan and current PawSox Ben Mondor will be elected to IL Hall of Fame. They will be inducted before a PawSox game this season.

Rice was a member of the PawSox in 1973 and 1974 and was the last member of the IL to win the triple crown. He hit .337 with 25 home runs and 95 RBIs in 1974. He was also named the International League MVP, the International League Rookie of the Year and was also the minor league player of the year in 1974 as well.

Morgan was in Pawtucket as the manager from 1974 to 1982. Morgan then finished the 1988 season as the Red Sox manager and was there through the 1991 season.

Mondor bought the club in 1977 and has been the owner ever since. He is also of one of Rice’s big supporters for the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

With Bobby Kielty and Eric Hinske likely signing with other teams, the Red Sox may look at Brandon Moss as the utility outfielder. As has been reported, Moss has been working at first base during winter ball in the Dominican Republic and could fill a role Hinske had for the Sox last year as a backup 1B/OF.

Brady Anderson Uses The Internet For Girls

Brady Anderson's absI know Steve probably won’t approve of this post since the video link is from TMZ but this is some funny stuff.

A friend of a TMZ TV staffer hooked up with Brady Anderson through the internet. In the beginning he sent her texts and the friend eventually ended up spending the night with Anderson. He sent her some cheesy text messages and also a picture of his abs (it might even be the picture to the right).

God bless internet dating for former major leaguers.

UConn Holds Off Louisville

Jim Calhoun reacts to a call - Courant Photo

Just two days after an emotional win at Indiana, the UConn Huskies were back on the court again and engaged themselves in a tough Big East battle. Again, the Huskies came out top as they were able to withstand a late run from the Louisville Cardinals to win 69-67 at the XL Center on Monday night.

After forcing a turnover on Craig Austrie with 24 seconds left in the game, Louisville (15-6, 5-3 Big East) came down the court with a chance to tie or win the game. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Juan Palacios’ 3-pointer was long and the rebound was tipped by Hasheem Thabeet over to Austrie as the clock ran out.

Call it the “hangover” effect or whatever you want as UConn (15-5, 5-3) got off to a slow start in the first half as Louisville got out to a 7-0 lead. UConn finally got on the board at the 15:46 mark when Stanley Robinson hit a jumper. Down 10-2, UConn went on a 8-0 run to tie it up at 10. The Huskies got their first lead of the game when Robinson hit another jumper to put UConn up 12-11.

Hasheem Thabeet dunk - Courant PhotoWith the score tied at 15, the Cardinals went on a 7-0 run before the Huskies battled back with a 6-0 run to get within one. The two teams went into the locker rooms at the XL Center tied at 30.

Austrie made sure the Huskies faithful didn’t have to stand for a long time in the second half as his jumper gave the Huskies a lead. The teams would exchange baskets for a few minutes. With UConn leading 41-40, they went on a 17-8 spurt that was capped off by a Hasheem Thabeet dunk in which he was fouled by Derrick Caracter.

At this point, it seemed as though the Huskies ran out of gas as you might expect after playing shorthanded on Saturday. Louisville got back into the game and tied it at 61 when they went on a 13-3 run of their own. An ally-oop dunk from Thabeet gave the Huskies a 67-63 lead. Jerry Smith hit a 3 to get Louisville within 2 points at 69-67 and that’s the way the scoreboard looked at the end of the game.

AJ Price - AP PhotoA.J. Price led the way for UConn with 20 points. He also pulled down 7 boards and had 4 assists. Robinson chipped with a double-double as he scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds while Jeff Adrien had a double-double of his own with 12 points and 10 boards as well. Austrie and Thabeet both added 9 points to the cause.

Louisville was paced by Palacios with 16 points. David Padgett was the only other Cardinal in double digits as he has 12 points. Edgar Sosa and Terrence Williams added 7 points while the trio of Andre McGee, Jerry Smith and Caracter added 6 points. Williams also had a team-high 7 rebounds.

Another great win for the surging Huskies who have now won 4 in a row and have seemed to overcome their hex on national television. Stay tuned during the week about the status of Jerome Dyson and Doug Wiggins (more on them in the notes).

The Huskies will go for their 5th straight win on Saturday when the #21 Pitt Panthers come to the XL Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM and the game will be televised nationally on CBS. Verne Lundquist and Billy Packer will have the call.

Paw Prints – Moore Wins 6th Big East Rookie Award

Paw Prints - Women's Roundball @ SOX & Dawgs

I am beginning to think the folks at the Big East Conference may just want to award UConn’s freshman sensation Maya Moore the Big East Rookie of the Year Award.

Moore was named the Big East Rookie of the Week again for the fourth time in 5 weeks and for the sixth time overall this season. In the two wins against #3 North Carolina and #16 Notre Dame, Moore averaged 17 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

She had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Huskies win over #3 North Carolina one week ago. In last night’s win over #16 Notre Dame, she scored UConn’s first 15 points, which was her final total for the game. She has been in double-figures in each of her 19 games this season, which is a UConn record.

Tina Charles was named to the Big East Honor Roll for her play in those two wins as well. In the two games, she averaged a double-double with 18.5 points a game and 13.5 rebounds a game.
