Pedroia Wins 2008 Silver Slugger Award

Dustin Pedroia - 2008 Silver Slugger Award winner

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia may need to add a trophy room to his house in Arizona as he won the 2008 Silver Slugger Award for being the top offensive player at second base in the American League.

Pedroia hit .326 with 17 home runs, 83 RBI and 20 stolen bases. He also had a league-leading 54 doubles and was tied with Ichiro Suzuki with a MLB-high 213 hits. Plus he led the AL with 118 runs scored and 61 multi-hit games.

Patriots Tailgating Tidbits – Week 11

mangini vs belichick vii

Personally I hate these Thursday night games.  Why not just do Saturday night games instead it makes it much easier on the teams than having to deal with the ultra shortened week and then a long layoff that’s almost like having a second bye week.

Don’t forget to check out the official Sox & Dawgs Jets-Patriots Preview for the team rosters, broadcast information, odds, news and both teams plus stuff you need it you’re going to the Razor for the game.

First things first.  Tonight is Troy Brown Night at the Razor and the former Patriots wide receiver will be honored at halftime.  Brown spent his entire 15 year career with New England and was the ultimate Patriot.  Bob Kraft loves him, Bill Belichick loves him, his teammates loved him and the fans love him.  There just isn’t much more you can say about Brown that hasn’t already been said.

This is too funny and comes from Sox & Dawgs friend Bruce Allen of Boston Sports Media Watch.  Seems a Jet player wanted to comment on the Patriots to Mark Cannizarro of the New York Post but didn’t want his attached to it to avoid the bulletin board material.

To quote Bruce: “Um, just because you’re anonymous doesn’t mean your comments aren’t bulletin board material, genius.”  No one ever said all football players are smart.

Rain is in the forecast for the game and Patriots QB Matt Cassel doesn’t seem to care.

Was it me or was Shira Springer’s Globe article on Tom Brady’s recovery a little behind the times?  It’s like it got caught up int he blogosphere from 3 weeks ago and decided to land the other the day.  There was nothing in it we don’t already know and it proved that medical people without prior knowledge of the specific case no jack shit about the injury.  Maybe Shira Springer, Medicine Woman should stick to something besides medical reporting.

Reiss’ Pieces has the “Bits from Belichick” in preparation for the tonigh’s showdown with the Jets.  Reiss also has the updates on Adalius Thomas and Laurence Maroney.

If Thomas is placed on the IR is Junior Seau coming back to Foxboro far behind?  What about Rosevelt Colvin?  In fact Rosey checked in with Dale and Holley Tuesday on WEEI.

This morning Christopher Gasper of the Globe has this post surgery update on Thomas.

“The Plagiariser” says Ty Law’s signing with the Jets is just another shot in the fued between the two teams.

So is this the week Sammy Morris comes back?  It still doesn’t look good for LaMont Jordan either.

The new Hall at Patriot Place is a hit.

Cliff Lee Wins 2008 AL Cy Young

Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians was named the winner of the 2008 AL Cy Young for his stellar season. He is the second straight member of the Indians to win the award, C.C. Sabathia won it last year.

Lee received 24 of the 28 first place votes. Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays finished second and received the other 4 first place votes.  Free agent closer Francisco Rodriguez from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim finished 3rd.

Boston Red Sox Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka finished 4th.

After having to compete for the 5th starter spot in spring training, Lee came out firing as he won his first six starts and racked up a 0.81 ERA. He finished the season with a 22-3 record and a 2.54 ERA.

Orlovsky To Wait On Surgery

Dan Orlovsky - Detroit Free Press PhotoFormer UConn Huskies and current Detroit Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky has decided to wait on surgery for his injured right thumb.

“I’m not going to get surgery,” Orlovsky said Wednesday. “I’m going to try and do everything I can not to have surgery. I’m going to give it time to let it heal on its own, and we’ll reassess it in a couple weeks.”

Given the fact that the Lions have not placed him on injured reserve and actually released third string quarterback Drew Hensen, tells you how highly the Lions think of him. Despite not leading the Lions to a win, he has shown that he can play in the NFL.

Newly signed Daunte Culpepper gets the start again for the Lions this week against the Carolina Panthers.

Who Loves Brett Favre More? ESPN Or NFL Network?

We all know of ESPN’s love affair with New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre. And now the NFL Network is trying to make it a Ménage à trois. And better yet, they are making Favre out to be a hero.

I’m not sure if we can expect a love affair of Favre from Bob Papa and Chris Collinsworth during tonight’s New England Patriots vs Jets game on the NFLN tonight.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 11/13

Down the stretch the Boston Red Sox come as the exclusive negotiating period with free agent catcher Jason Varitek is about to come to a close. And of course there’s nothing new to report on that end.

David OrtizDavid Ortiz made an appearance on WEEI yesterday to promote his charity golf tournament in the Dominican Republic and during that time he talked about many things including former outfielder Manny Ramirez.

“The Manny situation was a tough situation for the team, for us the teammates, for him as a player,” Ortiz said. “He was trying to get to be out, everybody knows, it’s not news, for the past few years and it was something that it was getting worse and worse and worse every year. Last year [in the beginning] was one of those years that he just chill out and went to his business and pull himself together, it was a lot of talking.

“I myself, pretty much every year, have to kind of deal with that because me and Manny, we’re pretty close, and it got to the point where I had to come down and talk to him because we were going through a good situation and you don’t want to put the situation in a [bad] spot, everything just goes down. We were playing good. We were a pretty good contender in the American League East, and you just don’t want to change the whole thing, just knowing that you are the cleanup hitter, the best hitter in the game, and people look at you like, ‘Well what’s going on with this guy?,’ so, it was a lot of talking pretty much I encouraged Manny to talk to the media, make you guys job easy and it’s because you guys are the ones to let people know what’s going on, what’s happening with us in the clubhouse and everything, and he definitely agreed with me and started pretty much talking to everybody. Getting along.

“Everything started one day that I told Manny, ‘Hey look, look at the numbers that you have put up your whole career, and you have never been able to win an MVP, there’s a reason why’. And the media is our family. The media, sometimes you gonna find one or two guys that they’re gonna screw things up, try to get people’s attention writing bad things, but not everybody’s the same way. You gotta understand that and you can blame everybody for somebody that just makes a mistake. It doesn’t work like that . . . pull yourself together and start getting connected with the media because that’s how you express your feelings and people get to know more and Manny’s good things, that people don’t know about Manny. And he agreed with me.”

“Well, to tell you the truth, it was something going down between the Red Sox and Manny Ramirez that I can never really break that down for you because there’s some personal reasons that he has with our owners and I never got to the bottom of it, and [he’s] got his feelings, you know, Manny was, he got to the point that he really wanted to get to play for someone else.

“I’ll tell you one thing, I’m the kind of guy that I look at the positive side of everything and Manny, I get to learn a lot of things from Manny. Manny’s one of the guys that worked hard every day to have some really good performances out there, and I never saw Manny not getting prepared to play. . . now he wasn’t happy here, everybody knows that. And when a relationship get to the point, you gotta make a move just like we did, and you go from there.”

The Boston Red Sox have spoken to Scott Boras about Derek Lowe.  I just don’t see the Red Sox giving the money to him especially to be a No. 4 or 5 starter for the Red Sox. But who knows since we all know free agency can get kind of wacky at times.

The Red Sox and Lee County spent 3 hours yesterday hammering out the details of their new 30-year lease agreement.

Paw Prints The Daily Roundup

Last night, the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team easily dispatched of Team SRP in their final tuneup before the 2008-09 campaign gets underway on Sunday. After the game, Geno Auriemma noted that freshman Heather Buck could be out for an undetermined amount of time. And of course Geno being Geno, he had to make a snarky remark about it.

“It’s just two days ago that it really kind of came to the surface,’’ Geno said. “She’s a healthy kid. She’s been healthy her whole life. It’s being thrown in with these slugs that got her sick I think. She was living in Stonington and eating right and getting rest and doing all the things that nice kids do and hanging around nice people. She was always healthy. Now put her in with these McDonald’s-eating vigilantes all the bad stuff happens.’’

As we used to say with the dreadlocked former outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, that’s just “Geno being Geno.”

Former Whaler GM Burke No Longer Lead Duck

Former Hartford Whalers General Manager Brian Burke has stepped down from the same position with Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.  Burke, who earlier this week declined a contract extension offer, sighted family obligations for not wanting the extension.  He felt it was best for the team that he step aside as they had someone in the organization to replace him.

Brian BurkeTaking over as Ducks GM is Bob Murray, who was Burke’s right hand man in Anaheim and prior to that worked with him in Vancouver.

Burke came to Anaheim in 2005 and built the 2007 Stanley Cup championship team.  Prior to that he was the GM in Vancouver for six seasons.  Previous to that the Providence RI native was in the NHL office as the vice president in charge on discipline and was the GM for the Hartford Whalers for one season before joining the league.  He got his front office start in Vancouver as the Canucks Director of Hockey Operations in 1987.  he is also a former player agent.

Burke who is the general manager for the 2010 US Olympic Hockey Team is reported to be one of the candidates to fill the vacant Toronto Maple Leafs general managers slot.

Pierce Beats Buzzer; Hawks 103-102

Paul Pierce battles Marvin Williams for the ball during the first quarter of the Celtics 103-102 win, AP Photo. Paul Pierce is en fuego.  Somebody call the fire department because this guy is scorching everybody.  Tonight the Boston Celtics captain had 34 points and led yet another comeback as the Green took down the previously unbeaten Atlanta Hawks 103-102 at the TD Banknorth Garden on Wednesday night.

After yet another slow start that saw the Celtics yield 31 first quarter points to the young, upstart Hawks and fall behind by 16 points with 6 minutes left in the first half Boston decided enough was enough.  In the final six minutes of the half the C’s went on a 23-7 run to send the game to the intermission tied at 51-51.

The second half was a see-saw affair that saw the team’s pretty much trade baskets and small leads.  There were 20 lead changes in the game, most in the final two quarters as Atlanta led by no more than 3 and Boston by no more than 4 and that was with less than 2 minutes to play.

After the Hawks (6-1) came back from being down 99-95 to take a 102-101 lead the Celtics put the ball in Piece’s hands and as the clock ticked down the games final seconds Pierce hit a turning fade away jumper just inside the three point line over Al Horford to give Boston (8-1) a 103-102 lead with 0.05 left on the clock.  After an Atlanta timeout they tried to inbound the ball for a last chance attempt but some good pressure by Kevin Garnett on the inbounder resulted in a not so stellar pass that got away as the horn sounded.

In addition to Pierce who had 34 points, Kevin Garnett had a double-double with 25 points and 12 boards and Ray Allen chipped in 17 points, 15 of which came in the first half.

Atlanta put 5 players in double figures as Joe Johnson had 28 points, Mike Bibby put up 16, Marvin Williams and Flip Murray each had 14 and Maurice Evans added 13 points in the loss.

The Celtics come back to the home court Friday night against newly acquired Chauncy Billups and the Denver Nuggets.
