“I guess I could apologize, but I’m not going to apologize. I knew he was going to play, but I didn’t want it out there. When you play Tyler your gameplan changes. I’m sorry, but it’s a competitive game and you’re judged on winds and losses. I’m not going to give up anything that might give up our competitive edge.”

Lorenzen added that he knew during the week that he would be QB1 for the Huskies last night.

Celtics Beat Bucks in OT, 102-97

The Boston Celtics came into Milwaukee for a show down with the Bucks on Saturday night as a fatigued team having played 6 games in the last 8 days dating back to last week.  But even as fatigued as they were they came away with a 102-97 win in overtime over the Bucks at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

Paul Pierce is striped of the ball by Richard Jefferson. AP Photo. In a game that was close late, Milwaukee’s Luke Ridnour hit a runner with 1.4 seconds left in regulation to send the game to OT.  In overtime, it wasn’t very stellar play on either side of the ball as the Celtics had 4 turnovers in extra period.

Kevin Garnett also picked up his fifth and sixth fouls in the extra period fouling out the game.  This left the Celtics with Brian Scalabrine as their big man as Kendrick Perkins and Glen Davis had fouled out in regulation.  Even with the lack of a true big man the Bucks couldn’t take advantage of the Celtics in the paint missing several shots in the extra period.

In overtime the game came down to free throws as Boston’s Ray Allen was 4/4 from the line in the final minute with the Bucks up 1, 97-96.  His two freebies put the Green up 98-97.  Then Milwaukee’s Richard Jefferson missed a shot and Allen was fouled as he grabbed the rebound.  He made both for a 3point lead with 10.4 to play.

Dan Gadzuric missed a shot in the paint with 5 seconds left and Paul Pierce was fouled on the rebound sending him to the line with 3.6 left.  Pierce hit both FT’s for a 102-97 lead and the game.

Boston (9-2) was led by Pierce who has 28 points and was 14 of 15 from the line, Allen had 27 points and Garnett added 15 before fouling out.

Milwaukee (5-6) put five players in double figures as Andrew Bogut had 20 points, Ridnour had 19 points and Jefferson, Ramon Sessions and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute all had 14 a piece.

Prior to the trip to Milwaukee, the Celtics sent J.R. Giddens to the D-League.  Milwaukee was without Michael Redd and Charlie Villanueva for the game and lost Charlie Bell to an injury during the game.

The Celtics are idle until Tuesday when they face the New York Knicks at the Garden.

UConn Huskies Win 39-14 in Lorenzen’s Return

Tyler Lorenzen returned from injury to quarterback the Huskies to a 39-14 win over Syracuse

After the Syracuse Orange cut the score to 15-14, the UConn Huskies put up 24 unanswered points to win 39-14 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY. The win for the Huskies improves their record to 7-3 (3-2 Big East) and drops the Orange to 2-8 (1-5) and probably seals the fate of the Orange head coach Greg Robinson.

Tyler Lorenzen returned from injury to quarterback the Huskies to a 39-14 win over Syracuse.

All week long the question was who would be the quarterback for the Huskies in tonight’s game. Head coach Randy Edsall in Bill Belichick-like fashion kept quiet, saying wait until Saturday night to find out. Well it ended up being Tyler Lorenzen and not Cody Endres or Zach Frazer at the helm of the mothership.

Lorenzen didn’t have the best of games as his timing was off just a little. He was just 7-of-15 for 70 yards with his longest pass going for 17 yards. He also had 7 rushes for 10 yards. One thing is for certain though, the Huskies are definitely a better team with him at QB1. The offensive unit looked more relaxed with Lorenzen behind center. Lorenzen also brings another dynamic as he can run the ball as well and that opens up things.

Donald Brown had another big night for the Huskies as he had 22 rushes for 131 yards including a 49 yard run for his only touchdown of the night. Jordan Todman also had a big night rushing the ball as he had 6 carries for 78 yards and touchdown. His TD came on a 50 yard run on a reverse.

The UConn defense was strong throughout the game holding the Orange to 90 total yards in the 1st half and 97 yards through 3 quarters. The Orange ended up with just 147 yards total offense. Sadly enough, their longest play from scrimmage came on a 24 yard run by their punter Rob Long after a bad snap.

The Huskies picked off three passes on the night, including one by Robert McClain III who returned it 36 yards for a touchdown. The Huskies didn’t turn the ball over at all on the night. When you don’t turn the ball over, you’re usually going to give yourself a chance to win, which the Huskies did.

Even the Huskies special teams got in the act tonight as they were able to tackle Long in the end zone for safety after a bad snap. They also got a 70 yard punt return for a touchdown by Jasper Howard who got some great blocks along the way.

It’s a good win for the Huskies as it keeps their outside chances alive at winning the Big East Conference. They’ll need to win out and hope for some help along the way. And the way the Big East is going this year, anything is possible. The win also enhances the Huskies chances at a bowl (they are already bowl eligible) as the worst they can finish is 7-5.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 11/15

Will he be leaving on a jet plane?

It was a very quiet day for news out of the Boston Red Sox offices on Yawkey Way as it appears they have not made any offers to free agents. It could also be that the media didn’t learn of any either. Given the secretive nature of the Red Sox sometimes that could be the case.

The biggest free agent news yesterday was the Yankees offer of 6 years and over $140 million dollars to C.C. Sabathia. That’s ridiculous. Hasn’t anybody learned from the Barry Zito debacle? The Yanks also plan to offer contracts to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. The way the Yankees are going right now it’s quite possible they could have a $250 million dollar lineup next season (I may be exaggerating that just a little bit).

Obviously the Red Sox pressing need is at catcher. We all they re-sign Jason Varitek to come back. But if you think back to the end of the 2004 season, they let Lowe, Pedro Martinez and Johnny Damon all walk and sign elsewhere. It is very possible that the Red Sox could do the same with Varitek. Trust me, this isn’t any anti-Tek sentiment at all, it’s just a reality that could happen. Do I want that to happen? Heck no I don’t!

Nuggets Take Down Celtics

Billups shows who he plays for now. Getty Photo. The Denver Nuggets came into Boston to face the reigning NBA Champions having gone 3-1 since they traded Allen Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Billups.  They came out of Boston 4-1 since the trade with a 94-85 road win over the Boston Celtics Friday night at the TD Banknorth Garden.

The win was only Denver’s (5-4) second in Boston in their last 19 tries but unlike some football team and those that cover them from New York who won in Foxboro this week the Nuggets and the Denver media aren’t acting as if their win just won them the league championship.  The loss for Boston (8-2) was their first at home this season and and snapped an overall 6-game win streak.

Billups, the 2004 NBA Finals MVP, had 18 points and 7 assists, Carmelo Anthony also had 18 points with 13 rebounds for a doubel-double and Kenyon Martin chipped in with 16 points for Denver in the win.

The Green were led by Ray Allen who had 26 points, Paul Pierce added 19 points and Kevin Garnett score 16 in the loss.

The Celtics are right back at it Saturday night in MIlwaukee when the face the Bucks for the second time in a week.
