It was a very quiet day for news out of the Boston Red Sox offices on Yawkey Way as it appears they have not made any offers to free agents. It could also be that the media didn’t learn of any either. Given the secretive nature of the Red Sox sometimes that could be the case.
The biggest free agent news yesterday was the Yankees offer of 6 years and over $140 million dollars to C.C. Sabathia. That’s ridiculous. Hasn’t anybody learned from the Barry Zito debacle? The Yanks also plan to offer contracts to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. The way the Yankees are going right now it’s quite possible they could have a $250 million dollar lineup next season (I may be exaggerating that just a little bit).
Obviously the Red Sox pressing need is at catcher. We all they re-sign Jason Varitek to come back. But if you think back to the end of the 2004 season, they let Lowe, Pedro Martinez and Johnny Damon all walk and sign elsewhere. It is very possible that the Red Sox could do the same with Varitek. Trust me, this isn’t any anti-Tek sentiment at all, it’s just a reality that could happen. Do I want that to happen? Heck no I don’t!
