Video: Yankees Spank Sloppy Red Sox, 14-5

nysportscovers42514

Apparently they were filming a revival of the Bad New Bears franchise at Fenway Park last night.

How else could you explain the fact that the Boston Red Sox made an uncharacteristic five errors in a 14-5 loss to the New York Yankees. Of course all the blame doesn’t go to those errors.

It doesn’t help when your starting pitcher sucks a$.

Felix Doubront lasted just 2.2 innings, the second that’s happened this year. He gave up seven runs (three earned) on six hits, two walks and four errors. One of those errors was his own and he also allowed a run to score when he uncorked a wild pitch.

Things were so bad for an overworked bullpen that 1B/OF Mike Carp had to come in and work the 9th. He didn’t allow a hit but he did walk five batters with one of them scoring.

Xander Bogaerts paced the Red Sox with two hits and had an RBI. Jonny Gomes added a hit and two RBI (one on a sac fly) while David Ortiz added an RBI on a sac fly as well.

Video: Lackey Dominates Yanks in 5-1 Red Sox Win

New York Tabloid covers for Thursday, April 24, 2014

The story of last night’s Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees game should have been the fact that John Lackey struck out 11 batters over the course of eight innings to help the home squad to a 5-1 win.

Instead Michael Pineda took all the headlines when he was busted for using pine tar in the 2nd inning. To his credit, he admitted it after the game and took responsibility along with apologizing to his teammates for his stupidity.

The odd part was he already given up two runs in the 1st inning but was having an easy 2nd inning before the ejection.

Lackey allowed just the one run while scattering seven hits over the eight innings with those 11 strikeouts. Even Koji Uehara got in on the action with three strikeouts of his own. The only member of the Yanks not to strikeout was Brian McCann.

Mike Napoli had three hits and an RBI to lead the home squad. Dustin Pedroia added two hits and an RBI while both A.J. Pierzynski and Brock Holt had a hit and a RBI.

Video: Pineda Ejected For Using Pine Tar (Again)

The last time that Michael Pineda and the New York Yankees played the Boston Red Sox in New York, there was a picture of pine tar on Pineda’s hand. A little later in the game it had disappeared.

The Red Sox made no issue of it that night, perhaps because Clay Buchholz was pitching. Buchholz has in the past been accused of using something on the baseball.

Nonetheless, you’d think there would be no way that Pineda would do it again? Or even do it again against the Red Sox?

Well he did.

During the 2nd inning of Wednesday night’s game with Grady Sizemore at the plate, John Farrell came out to the plate and asked home plate umpire Gerry Davis to check Pineda.

A routine search turned up nothing initially. Then Davis took off his gloves and checked Pineda’s neck where he found pine tar and proceeded to eject him from the game.

The look on Derek Jeter‘s face tells it all.

Video: Ellsbury Quiets Red Sox Fans In Yankees 9-2 Win

Jacoby Ellsbury #22 of the New York Yankees walks up to the plate for the first time at Fenway Park since signing with the Yankkes against the Boston Red Sox during the game at Fenway Park on April 22, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts.

No matter how you look at it, Jacoby Ellsbury was an integral part of two World Series Championships as a member of the Boston Red Sox. So if you wanted to boo him because he went to the hated rivals of the Red Sox, the New York Yankees, you had every right to do just that.

And if you want to boo him for what he did to the Red Sox on Tuesday night, feel free to do so.

Ellsbury had two hits and two RBIs he and his teammates roughed up Jon Lester in a 9-2 win for the Evil Empire at Fenway Park.

Lester allowed eight runs (three earned) on 11 hits, four walks and two errors while striking out seven in 4.2 innings of work.

David Ortiz and Mike Napoli provided the Red Sox runs on the evening when they had back-to-back home runs in the 4th inning. Big Papi’s home run was measured at 482 feet, which is the longest in the AL this year.

Every Red Sox starter had at least one hit with the exception of Grady Sizemore. It was also the first time that Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka had faced the Red Sox.

Video: Red Sox Rally Falls Short in 7-6 Loss To O’s

Marc Fucarile, injured in last years Boston Marathon bombings, prepares to throw out the first pitch prior to the Boston Red Sox/ Baltimore Orioles game at Fenway Park April 21, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Patriot’s Day in Massachusetts is the first real sign of spring in Boston. You have the Boston Marathon and of course the Boston Red Sox playing at 11 a.m. each year.

This year’s Patriot’s Day was an emotional one after what transpired one year ago. Over 34,000 runners took the Boston Marathon course while 37,513 crammed into Fenway Park for a baseball game.

In the grand scheme of things, there were no losers in the game despite what the scoreboard said. The city showed the world its resiliency by bouncing back from one year ago.

So despite the fact the Red Sox couldn’t complete their comeback against the Baltimore Orioles in a 7-6 loss, there were plenty of other stories out there about comebacks that are much more meaningful.

Video: Throwing Error Gives Red Sox 6-5 Walk-Off Win Over O’s

Dustin Pedroia #15 of the Boston Red Sox scores on an errant throw to home against the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning to win the game 6-5 at Fenway Park on April 20, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Sunday night’s game between the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles had just about everything and anything happen. Replay, idiot fans, bad pitching, good pitching, bad defense, good defense, you name it, it happened.

So it shouldn’t surprise you that the Red Sox scored the winning run on a David Lough throwing error that completed a come-from-behind 6-5 win at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox had the bases loaded in the 9th with one out when pinch-hitter Mike Carp lined out to Lough. Dustin Pedroia had started home then went back and tagged up. He then ran a little bit before heading back. But when Lough’s throw was off target, Pedey scampered home for the winning run.

It was Jonny Gomes who got the Red Sox back into the game after Ubaldo Jimenez had dominated them for the first five innings. His three run homer in the 6th inning cut the Orioles lead to 5-3. The local nine would add two more in the 7th before the crazy 9th inning.

David Ortiz had two hits and an RBI while Pedroia and Gomes both had two hits as well.

Jake Peavy started this one for the home team and was roughed up for five runs on 10 hits and four walks in 5.2 innings. The bullpen was solid over the final 3.1 innings allowing just two hits. Edward Mujica picked up the win after striking out the only batter he faced in the top half of the 9th.

Video: Holt Triples Red Sox To 4-2 Win Over Orioles

Brock Holt #26 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after he scored on a suicide squeeze against the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh inning at Fenway Park on April 19, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Brock Holt was on fire at Triple-A Pawtucket. With Ryan Roberts struggling in place of the injured Will Middlebrooks, the Boston Red Sox brass thought they could spark the team by bringing up Holt.

They were right.

Holt’s RBI triple in the 7th scored Mike Carp to give the Red Sox the lead for good in a 4-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Jonathan Herrera provided an insurance run with his second safety squeeze of the week. Mike Napoli had an RBI and David Ortiz had the other run on a solo home run around Pesky’s Pole.  Both Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia led the home team with two hits each.

After a rough 1st inning, Felix Doubront settled down and pitched perhaps his finest game of the young season. He went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Junichi Tazawa needed just 11 pitches to record four outs and after a lead-off walk, Koji Uehara struck out the side for his fourth save of the season.
