Video: Mike Olt Delivers Walkoff Single On Sunday

I’d be remissed if I didn’t get a chance to mention this but Branford, CT native and former UConn Huskies baseball player Mike Olt picked up another first in his brief MLB career.

After singling in his first career at-bat, Olt delivered his first walkoff hit for the Texas Rangers on Sunday as his single helped his team to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.

You can also catch Olt talk about the walkoff hit as well.

Video: Mike Olt Singles In First MLB At-Bat

Earlier in the day we learned that the Texas Rangers had called up Branford, CT native and former UConn Huskies third baseman Mike Olt from Double-A.

Rangers manager Ron Washington wasted no time putting Olt in the Rangers lineup as he is batting eighth and playing first base. Well, Olt didn’t have to wait long for his first MLB hit as he singled off of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starter C.J. Wilson in the 2nd inning in his first at-bat.

Video: Larry Taylor Returns Missed FG 125 Yards

Former UConn Huskies wide receiver/kick returner Larry Taylor never really got to make his mark in the NFL.

He had actually started his professional career in the Canadian Football League mainly as a special teams player with the Montreal Alouettes in 2008 and 2009. In 2009, he was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in a season that saw him return two punts for touchdowns.

He got a chance with the New York Jets in 2010 but was one of the final cuts. He stayed on the practice squad for a month before being released and returning to the Alouettes. He moved across Canada in 2011 to play with the Calgary Stampeders where he his currently playing.

On Saturday night in a game against the Toronto Argonauts, Taylor took a missed field goal (the rules are different in the CFL on missed field goals) and returned it 125 yards for a touchdown.

Video: Notre Dame Knocks UConn Out Of Final Four, Again

Last year, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball team took something from the UConn Huskies. A chance at the national title. UConn returned the favor this year by beating the Irish for the Big East Tournament title.

Well, it was Notre Dame who had the final word again as they used a big Skylar Diggins block and Brittany Mallory three in overtime to help propel them past UConn 83-75 in front of 19,028 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO.

The Huskies finish up the season at 33-5 while the Irish (35-3) advance to the NCAA Women’s Championship Game for the second straight season.

Despite being in foul trouble for most of the second half, Stefanie Dolson led five Huskies in double digits with 20 points and nine rebounds. Bria Hartley added 18 points while Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Tiffany Hayes, who played her last game at UConn, finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals. But she did have six turnovers. Kelly Faris rounded out the Huskies in double figures with 10 points, five assists and three steals.

Natalie Novosel paced the Irish with 20 points while Diggins had 19. Devereaux Peters had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds with Mallory chipping in with 11 points, including two big threes in overtime.

Video: UConn Women Advance To 5th Straight Final Four

Connecticut team member pose with the regional trophy after Connecticut defeated Kentucky in an NCAA women's college basketball tournament regional final in Kingston, R.I., Tuesday, March 27, 2012.

For the better part of the first half, it looked as though the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team wouldn’t get to the Final Four.

They started out quickly only to see the Kentucky Wildcats battle back. But as we’ve seen for the entire season, when UConn clamps down on defense and plays UConn basketball, the other teams are in trouble.

That strong second half defensive effort along with the play of Tiffany Hayes turned out to be the difference in UConn’s 80-65 win over the Wildcats at The Ryan Center in Kingston, RI on Tuesday night.

It’s the fifth straight Final Four for the Huskies (33-4) as they’ll face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for the fourth time this season. The Wildcats finish up the season at 28-7.

Hayes led five Huskies in double digits with 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had another great game with 18 points and seven rebounds while Stefanie Dolson added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Bria Hartley added 13 points while Kelly Faris had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists before fouling out late in the game.

Former Husky Samarie Walker led Kentucky with 14 points and had five rebounds. Bria Goss chipped in with 12 points while Connecticut native Kastine Evans had 10. A’Dia Mathies led the Wildcats with eight rebounds to go along with her seven points.
