Poor Shooting Costs Celtics Down The Stretch
Boston Celtics: Trailing late in the game, the Utah Jazz rallied from behind to take a 90-85 win over the Boston Celtics in Salt Lake City. Without Kevin Garnett, who was lost with a right knee injury, the Celtics struggled down the stretch not being able to convert at the free throw line or make their shots as Utah stepped up it’s defense. Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 20 points with Rajon Rando adding 15. Ray Allen and Kendrick Perkins both chipped in with 12. The victorious Jazz were led by Mehmet Okur’s 19 points and Deron Williams’ 18. Next up for the Celtics is a matchup with Shaq and the Phoenix Suns Sunday afternoon. [ESPN.com]

Dyson Out For the Year

The UConn Huskies men’s basketball program announced this afternoon that Jerome Dyson is officially out for the season after undergoing a successful repair of the torn lateral meniscus in his right knee. He will be out 3-4 months for rehab.
There had been some thought that Dyson may have been able to return earlier if the tear wasn’t bad but obviously it was with it being repaired.
Renee Montgomery Added To Huskies Of Honor

Before today’s game against the Pittsburgh Panthers, UConn senior captain and point guard Renee Montgomery was added to the Huskies of Honor. Her No. 20 will now hang above Gampel Pavilion with all of the other 10 UConn Huskies women’s basketball greats (Rebecca Lobo, Kara Wolters, Jennifer Rizzotti, Diana Taurasi, Swin Cash, Shea Ralph, Sue Bird, Nykesha Sales, Kerry Bascom and Svetlana Abrosimova), head coach Geno Auriemma and the 1994-95 undefeated National Championship team.
Including today’s game, Montgomery has started 134 straight games and 127 straight in Big East Conference play. which is the most in women’s basketball. Coming into today, she needs just 259 points to reach the 2,000 point plateau, which has only been done by 5 players.
Montgomery is the only the the third player in UConn women’s history, joining Diana Taurasi and Jen Rizzotti, to score 1,500 points and have 500 assists. She is also the third player, joining Shea Ralph and Svetlana Abrosimova to be in the top 10 in her career of points, assists and steals.
This is a tremendous honor for Montgomery as she becomes the first Husky to be honored before graduation. It’s definitely an honor well deserved for her as well. She’s been the leader of this team for 3 seasons and she’s one of the main reasons why the Huskies are the No. 1 team in the nation.
Congratulations to Renee and her family on this truly great honor.
