Monarchs Slip Past Wolf Pack in OT, 4-3

By Zachary Grenier

Hartford, CT, November 16, 2014 – The Hartford Wolf Pack suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss at home Sunday afternoon against the Manchester Monarchs, 4-3.  The loss was the third in a row (0-2-1-0) for the Wolf Pack, and gave the Monarchs their fifth consecutive win.

Hartford Wolf PackHartford drew first blood when Chris Bourque ripped a one-timer, off of a Tomas Kaberle pass, that beat Manchester goaltender Patrik Bartosak over his shoulder, on a 5-on-3 power-play at 6:35 of the first.

“I think we were fortunate in the first period there, we got the quick 5-on-3 goal and we had a lot of power-play opportunities,” said Wolf Pack coach Ken Gernander.  “I think we kind of fooled ourselves or got tricked in to playing like we were constantly on the power play.  We were getting away from any type of physical battles, finishing hits, forechecking, that type of thing, and just trying to do things through finesse and puck skills rather than some of the hard work.”

Manchester answered back with a goal of their own with 3:57 remaining in the first.  Sean Backman fired a shot off of the post and the puck sat in the crease behind Hartford goaltender Mackenzie Skapski.  Michael Mersch was the man in the right place, who was able to send the puck in to the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

It did not take long for the scoring to get going in the second period, as Manchester’s Nick Shore was able to get a bouncing puck past Skapski for his 13th point of the season just 2:29 into the period.

With just under five minutes gone in the second, the Wolf Pack power-play unit came up with another goal to tie the game at two.  It was Kaberle again on the assist; this one on a shot on goal that was deflected by the stick of 6-4 left winger Justin Vaive.

“Justin Vaive I thought had a great night,” said Gernander.  “He was one guy that wanted to get in on the forecheck and create those board battles or finish hits, and I think he did a nice job net-front.  He has been doing a good job net-front on the PP and he got rewarded for it again.”

J.T. Miller gave the Pack a 3-2 lead heading in to the third, when he deflected Michael Kostka’s wrist shot from the right face-off dot past Bartosak.  That goal lifted Miller into the Wolf Pack team points lead (5-8-13), one point up on Oscar Lindberg.

Manchester’s Jordan Weal tied the game up with 8:50 left in the third period, on a power-play goal.  The goal came off of a Nic Dowd shot, as the rebound kicked to the side of the net and Weal jammed it home for his 14th point of the season, good for a tie for the Monarch team lead.

“We gave up that power-play goal in the third, and then from that point on I think, until the overtime, we really stopped making plays,” said Gernander.  “We just allowed them to come at us, and I thought [Skapski] did a nice job in net.  In overtime I think it was a little too much high-risk/high-reward type of hockey.”

In overtime, Skapski made some huge saves that kept the Pack alive for a while.  It was not until there was 1:03 left in overtime that Brian O’Neill was able to find the back of the net to give the Monarchs their tenth win of the season.  O’Neill patiently handled the puck in front of the net and was able to beat a sliding Skapski, who desperately threw his leg up in the air.

“If a player gets that kind of patience, then most of the time they’re going to capitalize on it because really they can do whatever they want to do,” said Skapski.

Skapski stopped 36 of the 40 shots that he faced in Hartford’s third loss of the weekend.

“We got one point, but that is another point that we need,” said Skapski.

The Wolf Pack are back on home ice this Wednesday, November 19, hosting the Syracuse Crunch in a 7:00 PM game.  That is a “Winning Wednesday”, as if the Wolf Pack win, each fan receives a free ticket to the Wolf Pack’s next home game, which is this Saturday, November 22 vs. Bridgeport.  Wednesday’s game is also the next chance for fans to take advantage of the Wolf Pack’s “Click It or Ticket Family Value Packs”, which feature two tickets, two sodas and two hot dogs, all for only $35.

Sound Tigers Sweep Home-and-Home With Wolf Pack in 5-2 Win

Bridgeport, CT, November 15, 2014 – Defenseman Ryan Pulock scored a pair of power-play goals Saturday night at the Webster Bank Arena, to lead the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to a 5-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack and a sweep of a home-and-home series between the AHL’s two Connecticut teams.

Hartford Wolf PackIn the first meeting between the two clubs, Friday night in Hartford, the Sound Tigers rolled to a 6-1 win.

Chris Langkow also scored for Bridgeport, Mike Halmo had the game-winner, and Colin McDonald added an empty-net goal.  Kael Mouillierat and Aaron Ness had two assists apiece.  Chris McCarthy and Danny Kristo scored for the Wolf Pack.

The two teams traded goals in the first period, with the Wolf Pack taking their first lead of the two games on McCarthy’s first AHL goal of the season.

Nick Tarnasky backhanded the puck toward the net from the left-wing side, and it dropped down in front of the goal for McCarthy to punch in from in the goalmouth.

The Sound Tigers replied at 14:21, off of a faceoff.  Bridgeport won a draw to the right of Wolf Pack goaltender Mackenzie Skapski (24 saves), who stopped a shot from the left side of the slot by Brett Gallant, but the Wolf Pack lost track of Langkow.  Left alone in front of Skapski, Langkow poked the rebound of Gallant’s shot into the net for a 1-1 tie.

The Wolf Pack carried much of the play in the second period, outshooting the Sound Tigers 13-5, but Bridgeport got the only goal of the frame.  It came on a power play at 12:42, with Oscar Lindberg in the penalty box for holding.

Pulock and Ness exchanged the puck on the points, with Ness finding Pulock at the top of the slot.  Pulock gunned a hard slapshot that got by Skapski low on the stick side.

Leading 2-1 going into the third period, Bridgeport got the eventual game-winner at 3:59 of the final stanza.

Adam Pelech’s dump-in came off the left-wing corner boards and deflected across the slot, and Mouillierat tipped it in front of the goal to Halmo, who was able to put a quick shot past Skapski.

The Wolf Pack power play got that goal back at 6:40, on Kristo’s fourth goal of the season.  Mat Bodie passed to Kristo on the left boards, and Kristo moved to the top of the circle before firing a shot that hit the top of Sound Tiger goalie David Leggio’s catching glove and found its way into the net.

The Wolf Pack got into penalty trouble after that, though, as Bridgeport was awarded four straight power plays.  The Sound Tigers capitalized twice to put the game away.

First, at 11:57 with Lindberg off for cross-checking, Pulock scored his second of the game.  Set up at the right point by Mouillierat, Pulock unloaded a low shot that Skapski got a piece of, but could not prevent from going through his five-hole.

Then, after Dallas Jackson was called for slashing with two minutes left, the Wolf Pack pulled Skapski for an extra attacker, only to see Alan Quine set up McDonald in front of the net for a tap-in at 18:43, to make it a 5-2 final.

Leggio made 25 saves to get the win for Bridgeport, and Skapski suffered his first career AHL loss, falling to 3-1-0 on the season.

The Wolf Pack complete a busy weekend at home Sunday, hosting the Manchester Monarchs at the XL Center at 3:00 PM.  That is the next chance for fans to take advantage of the Wolf Pack’s “Click It or Ticket Family Value Packs”, which feature two tickets, two sodas and two hot dogs, all for only $35.  Also, the Wolf Pack’s food drive, which benefits Foodshare, continues at Sunday’s game.  Fans are encouraged to bring canned goods to the game, and any fan donating five or more cans will receive a voucher for a free ticket to an upcoming Wolf Pack game of their choice.

Sound Tigers Take Care of Business in 6-1 Win Over Wolf Pack

By Zachary Grenier

Hartford, CT, November 14, 2014 – Wethersfield, CT native Colin McDonald had four points, with two goals and two assists, Friday night at the XL Center, to lead the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to a 6-1 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack, in the front end of a home-and-home series between the two Connecticut rivals.

Hartford Wolf PackJustin Courtnall, Alan Quine, Mike Halmo and Ryan Pulock also scored for Bridgeport, and Kevin Poulin had 34 saves.  Ryan Haggerty scored the only Hartford goal.

The Pack started out in a hole early, when Courtnall fired a backhander over the shoulder of Wolf Pack goaltender Cedrick Desjardins (15 saves) just four minutes in to the game, for his second goal of the season.

It wasn’t until there was 3:04 remaining in the first that there was another goal.  This too went to the Sound Tigers, when Halmo scored his third goal of the season.  Halmo intercepted a Hartford breakout pass in the defensive zone and fired a wrist shot past Desjardins’ catching glove from the slot.

The scoring was not done in the opening period for Bridgeport, as Quine scored his fifth goal of the season, set up by McDonald, with 1:16 remaining in the first.  The goal dug the Pack in to a larger hole and caused Coach Ken Gernander to use his timeout.

The second period was dominated by the Wolf Pack, as they outshot the Sound Tigers 17-4 in the period, but Poulin stood strong.

The lone Pack goal came with 14:44 left in the second period, when Haggerty showed determination in front of the net and took a few swipes at the puck, after an Oscar Lindberg shot was blocked.  The assist gave Lindberg his team-leading 12th point of the season.

The second period ended with the score at 3-1, despite a number of quality chances for Hartford.

It was all Bridgeport the rest of the way, as they tallied three third-period goals, two of them by McDonald with under six minutes left to play, to make it a 6-1 final.

The Wolf Pack and Sound Tigers complete the home-and-home Saturday night at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, with faceoff at 7:00 PM.  All of the action of that battle can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 1410, and on-line at www.foxsportsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio.  Video streaming is available at www.ahllive.com.

Jesper Fast #91 of the New York Rangers skates against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center on October 4, 2014 in Newark, New Jersey.

NEW YORK, November 10, 2014 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the team has recalled forward Jesper Fast from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL). The team has also assigned defenseman Conor Allen and forward Ryan Malone to Hartford.

Fast, 22, has registered one goal and eight assists for nine points in 11 games with Hartford since he joined the team on October 17. Fast has tallied a point in seven of his last eight games with the Wolf Pack, and had posted a six-game point streak (one goal, six assists over the span) prior to being recalled.

Fast is tied for 10th in the AHL in assists (eight) this season. He is also tied for the team lead in assists and is tied for third on the Wolf Pack in points (nine) in 2014-15.

The 6-0, 185-pounder has skated in three games with the Rangers this season, recording three shots on goal and two blocked shots.

Allen was credited with six hits and recorded two shots on goal in four games with the Rangers after being recalled on November 2. Prior to being recalled by the Rangers, Allen had recorded two goals and three assists for five points in eight games with the Wolf Pack this season. He was tied for third on Hartford in goals and was tied for fifth on the team in assists and points at the time he was recalled.

Malone has recorded six shots on goal and has been credited with 14 hits in six games with the Rangers this season.

Lindberg Nets Game-Winner in Wolf Pack’s 3-2 Win Over Bears

Hershey, PA, November 9, 2014 – Oscar Lindberg scored two goals, including the third-period game-winner, Sunday at Giant Center, to lead the Hartford Wolf Pack to a 3-2 win over the Hershey Bears, in the second of back-to-back games between the two teams.

Hartford Wolf PackHershey took the first of the two contests Saturday night, scoring four third-period goals to erase a 2-0 deficit, in a 4-2 win.

“I think we played a pretty greasy game, and we had some good power plays and we found a way to win, that’s what counts,” said Lindberg, who upped his team-leading goal total on the year to eight.  “On the power play I got some good looks and a good shot, and those pucks don’t go in if we don’t have a screen, and our guys did a good job in there.”

With the score tied 2-2 early in the third, Hershey goaltender Pheonix Copley (26 saves) made a sharp save on Ryan Haggerty, off of a pass from Marek Hrivik, but the Wolf Pack continued to attack.  Seconds later, Dallas Jackson pinched down from the left point to keep the puck in, and Lindberg, covering the point for Jackson, fired the puck at the net with Hrivik screening, and the shot eluded Copley at 2:31.

Wolf Pack goaltender Mackenzie Skapski, who ended up with 22 saves in the game, made that goal hold up by stopping 12 Hershey shots in the third, to improve his AHL record to 3-0-0.  Jackson had two assists, for his first Wolf Pack points in four games with the team, and Chris Bourque also scored.

Connor Carrick and Nathan Walker scored first-period goals for the Bears.

The Wolf Pack outshot the Bears 13-2 in the first period but came out of it down 3-2, as Hershey scored on both of its shots on goal.

Carrick, who scored in Saturday’s third period, put Hershey on top only 2:34 into Sunday’s game, in a four-on-four situation.  Carrick moved down the right-wing side, and used Mat Bodie as a screen, to beat Skapski with a shot to the glove side.

The Wolf Pack answered that only 59 seconds later on a power play, as Lindberg clicked for his first of the game at 3:33.  Lindberg stickhandled off of the right-wing boards and shot from near the top of the circle, putting the puck through a Justin Vaive screen and past Copley.

Hershey responded at 8:24, with Walker scoring his first goal of the season on a deflection.  Eric Burgdoerfer wristed the puck at the net from the middle of the blue line, and Walker redirected it past Skapski’s stick side.

The Wolf Pack continued their territorial dominance on the first shift of the second period, and tied the score only 55 seconds in.

Chris Bourque, who won three Calder Cups as a member of the Bears earlier in his career, scored his fourth Wolf Pack goal to tie it at two, heading hard toward the net from the right-wing side to deflect the puck in, after Jackson slapped it at the net from the left point.

The Wolf Pack are now off until this Friday, November 14, when they host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the XL Center in a 7:00 PM game.  Once again this season, every Friday night home game features $1 hot dogs and $2 beers through the start of the second period.

Four In Third Gives Bears 4-2 Win Over Wolf Pack

Hershey, PA, November 8, 2014 – The Hershey Bears scored four third-period goals Saturday night at Giant Center, erasing a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Hartford Wolf Pack 4-2, in the first of back-to-back games between the two teams.

Hartford Wolf PackFormer Wolf Pack Kris Newbury had the game-winning goal with 3:18 left in the third, and added an empty-netter, and Chris Brown and Connor Carrick also scored in Hershey’s third-period burst.  Oscar Lindberg and J.T. Miller had the Wolf Pack goals, and Jesper Fast assisted on both.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Wolf Pack, who fell to 7-3-1-0 on the season.

“Obviously it’s tough to lose that game, I thought we outplayed them for 50 minutes,” Miller said.  It’s just a matter of how it works, you’ve got to find ways to win that hockey game.”

The Wolf Pack carried a 2-0 lead into the third, and that held up until Brown got the Bears on the board at the 10:07 mark, with Hartford’s Dallas Jackson off for tripping.  Brown’s shot from the top of the left-wing circle hit Wolf Pack defenseman Dylan McIlrath’s leg and deflected past goaltender Cedrick Desjardins (4-1-0), who suffered his first Wolf Pack loss despite making 29 saves.

Carrick then tied the score only 1:06 later, at 11:13, on a shot from high in the slot that squeezed through Desjardins’ pads.

That set the stage for Newbury’s game-winner, which came on a deflection at 16:42.  Ex-Connecticut Whale Casey Wellman fired the puck at the net from the left-wing boards and Newbury, left alone in front of the goal, tipped it perfectly past Desjardins and into the net.

Newbury’s eighth goal of the season with 7.8 seconds remaining sealed the comeback victory for Hershey, after the Wolf Pack had pulled Desjardins for an extra attacker.

After killing a pair of penalties in the first period, the Wolf Pack grabbed the game’s first lead on a power play of their own at 13:40.

With former Wolf Pack Dane Byers off for roughing, Lindberg increased his team-leading goal total to six, taking a pass from Mat Bodie on the left-wing side, cutting to the middle and beating Hershey goaltender Philipp Grubauer (28 saves) over the catching glove.

The Wolf Pack were outshot 12-9 in the second period, but were able to double their lead, with Miller scoring his third goal of the year at 8:16.

Miller handed the puck to Fast and headed up the middle, and Fast beat Byers’ check on right wing, before centering back to Miller for the finish.
