Video: UConn Women Overwhelm Villanova, 76-43

Jesse Carey of Villanova defends against Stefanie Dolson of UConn during the first half of UConn against Villanova.

Two things are guaranteed when you play Harry Perretta's Villanova Wildcats women's basketball team.

One, you can expect them to use the entire shot clock. Two, you can expect to shoot a ton of three-pointers. One way to counteract that though is get out to a quick fast start against them.

But when you're the UConn Huskies and capable of big runs, you can stop Perretta's game plan.

And that's exactly what the UConn women did as they went on an early big run in the first half and never looked back in a 76-43 win over the Wildcats in front of 10,324 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 19-1 (6-1 Big East). The Wildcats fall to 16-4 (5-2).

Stefanie Dolson led the way for UConn with 20 points and eight rebounds. Kaleena-Mosqueda Lewis added 19 points and a team-high five assists while freshman phenom Breanna Stewart had 14 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.

Kelly Faris had another nice all around game with six points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Caroline Doty's high school teammate Jesse Carey led Villanova with nine points and five rebounds. Emily Leer added eight points.

Dolson is turning into an absolute weapon for the Huskies. Not only can she dominate inside, she can shoot the ball pretty well from the outside. She's even increased her range adding a three-point shot to her arsenal. She reminds of Rebecca Lobo in her prime.

The UConn women return to action on Saturday afternoon when they head to New York City to take on the St. John's Red Storm. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Breanna Stewart Named Big East Freshman of the Week

UConn forward Breanna Stewart reacts after failing to come up with a loose ball during the second half.

For the third time this season, UConn Huskies women's basketball player Breanna Stewart has been named Big East Freshman of the Week.

Here's the release:

STORRS, Conn. – UConn women’s basketball standout Breanna Stewart was tabbed as this week’s BIG EAST Freshman of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday morning. This is Stewart’s third time this season to earn the accolade.

The freshman center averaged 11.5 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for the Huskies, which included a win over No. 4 Duke and a league victory at Cincinnati. After not attempting a shot in the opening period against Duke, Stewart finished the evening with 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks while shooting 71 percent against the Blue Devils.

She followed that up with a 10-point, seven-rebound effort at Cincinnati where she played 22 minutes. Stewart also added two assists and a block against the Bearcats.

Stewart and the Huskies return to action on Tuesday, January 29 at the XL Center when the welcome conference foe Villanova for a 7 p.m. tip.

Video: UConn Men Struggle Past Rutgers, 66-54

UConn forward DeAndre Daniels dunks between Rutgers forward Austin Johnson (21) and guard/forward Dane Miller.

Despite the fact the UConn Huskies men's basketball team has dominated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights over the years, they seem to struggle with them at times.

Sunday's game at the XL Center was no different.

A 9-0 run in the second half helped the Huskies pull away on their way to a 66-54 win over the Scarlet Knights in front of 12,768 fans.

The win ends a two-game losing streak for the Huskies as they improve to 13-5 (3-3 Big East. Rutgers falls to 12-7 (3-5).

Shabazz Napier led the way for the Huskies with 19 points and six assists while pulling down five rebounds. Ryan Boatright added 15 points while DeAndre Daniels had 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Jerome Seagears paced the Scarlet Knights with 21 points. Eli Carter added 13 points and six rebounds. Kadeem Jack led Rutgers with nine rebounds to go along with his eight points.

UConn saw their first half lead of seven points dwindle as Rutgers opened up with 10-1 run to take the lead. UConn battled back to take the lead at 35-32 when Niels Giffey had an old-fashioned three point play.

Rutgers responded though and cut the lead to 46-43 before UConn used that 9-0 run to seize control of the game.

As we know, one of UConn's battles this season has been being outrebounded time and time again. This time, they were able to outrebound Rutgers 37-33.

I still think UConn will surprise people as they keep going through this Big East season. They need to play more consistently though if they want to do that.

The Huskies will be back in action on Thursday night when they make the bus ride to the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI for a Big East matchup with the Providence Friars. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Video: UConn Women Spank Cincinnati, 67-31

Another visit to an old friend for the UConn Huskies women's basketball team. And has been the case in the past, it was just another big win for the team from Storrs, CT.

Behind stifling defense and a well-balanced scoring effort, the UConn women beat Jamelle Elliott's Cincinnati Bearcats 67-31 in front of 1,737 at Fifth Third Arena on Saturday night in Cincinnati, OH.

UConn's Stephanie Dolson splits the defense of Cincinnati guards Chelsea Jamison, left, and Dayeesha Hollins in the first halThe Huskies improve to 18-1 (5-1 Big East). The Bearcats fall to 8-11 (0-6).

Stefanie Dolson led the Huskies with 15 points in 25 minutes of action. Breanna Stewart was the only other Husky in double digits with 10 points and she also had seven rebounds.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had a game-high nine rebounds and eight points. Kelly Faris, Morgan Tuck and Brianna Banks all had seven points a piece. Bria Hartley had a nice game with six points, six rebounds and a team-high five assists.

Alyesha Lovett paced the Bearcats with nine points. Dayeesha Hollins had seven points while Kayla Cook had six points and a team-high four rebounds.

Cincinnati scored the first four points of the game. After that, it was all UConn as they closed out the half on a 41-5 run.

It's always tough when Geno Auriemma has to face a former player and/or coach of his. You know he wants to win but he doesn't want to embarrass them.

And that's basically what happened in this game.

Good win for the Huskies who continue to play some great basketball. They'll be back in action on Tuesday night when they host the Villanova Wildcats at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Pedro Martinez re-joins Red Sox as Special Assistant

One of my favorite players is returning to the Boston Red Sox not as a player but as a special assistant.

Here's the release from the Red Sox:

The Boston Red Sox today brought back Pedro Martinez into the organization, naming him as Special Assistant to the General Manager. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

Boston Red Sox"We are very excited to have Pedro onboard with us and back in the Red Sox organization," said Cherington. "He was one of the game's most dominant pitchers and without a doubt a beloved figure in Red Sox history. Similar to former teammate Jason Varitek, who joined the baseball operations staff in September, Pedro will be involved in several areas, including the evaluation, mentorship, and instruction of young players in Spring Training and throughout the season."

Martinez, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star, spent seven seasons with the Red Sox beginning in 1998 and was a key part of the 2004 team that brought a World Series title to Boston for the first time since 1918.

"I am thrilled to be returning to this organization and to the city I love," Martinez said. "Ben Cherington's meetings this week have been outstanding. It is an honor to be back with the Red Sox and help in any way I can. I am grateful to our leaders; I believe in them, and I thank them for allowing me to return to the field and help us win again. My heart will always live in Boston."

During his 18-year major league career, the native of the Dominican Republic went 219-100 with a 2.93 ERA and 3,154 strikeouts in 2,827.1 innings. His career .687 winning percentage ranks second among modern Major Leaguers (since 1900) behind only Whitey Ford's .690 mark (min. 250 decisions). Among pitchers with at least 2,500 career innings in the majors, only Nolan Ryan (.204) has a lower opponent batting average than Martinez (.214).

With the Red Sox, he went 117-37 with a 2.52 ERA. He has the best winning percentage in franchise history (.760, min. 15 decisions). He also tops club records (min. 1,000 innings) with an average of 11.0 strikeouts per nine innings and a .206 opponent batting average. Among Red Sox all-time leaders, he ranks third in strikeouts (1,683), sixth in wins (117), and seventh in ERA.

In his tenure with Boston, Martinez was the major league leader in winning percentage, ERA, opponent batting average, opponent on-base percentage (.261), opponent slugging percentage (.317), opponent OPS (.578), and WHIP (0.98). He also led all major leaguers in strikeouts per nine innings, the only American Leaguer to average at least a strikeout per inning during that stretch.

He was the starter, winner, and Most Valuable Player of the memorable 1999 All-Star Game at Fenway Park on July 13. He struck out the first four batters he faced: Barry Larkin, Larry Walker, Mark McGwire, and Sammy Sosa. After Matt Williams reached on an error, he then struck out Jeff Bagwell. Williams was then caught stealing to end the inning and the seal the performance.

In his career, Martinez led the Major Leagues in ERA on five occasions, including 1997 with the Expos (1.90) and four times during his first five years as a member of the Red Sox: 1999 (2.07), 2000 (1.74), 2002 (2.26), and 2003 (2.22). He won the AL's strikeout title in 1999 (313), 2000 (284), and 2002 (239).

Martinez finished within the top four in AL Cy Young balloting in each of his six full seasons with the Red Sox (with the exception coming in 2001, when he was limited to 18 starts due to injury).

Martinez was the unanimous winner of the American League's Cy Young Award in consecutive seasons–1999 and 2000. Winning the AL pitching Triple Crown in 1999, he fanned a Red Sox-record 313 batters in 213.1 innings, and set a league record that still stands with an average of 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings. That year, he also set a big league record striking out at least 10 batters in eight consecutive games.

His 1.74 ERA in 2000 is the best single-season mark by an American League pitcher over the last 44 seasons (starting in 1969). In 2000, he established modern major league records for lowest opponent average (.167), lowest opponent on-base percentage (.213), and WHIP (0.74).

Among all Dominican-born pitchers, Martinez has the highest winning percentage, most strikeouts, and ranks second only to Hall of Famer Juan Marichal in both wins and ERA.

Signed originally in 1988 by the Los Angeles Dodgers, for whom he played in 1992 and '93, Martinez also played for the Montreal Expos ('94-'97), the Red Sox ('98-'04), the New York Mets ('05-'08), and the Philadelphia Phillies ('09).

Martinez made a Red Sox-record 11 starts in four seasons of postseason play with Boston and compiled a 3.46 ERA in his 13 outings. He is also the franchise's all-time leader in wins (tied, 6), strikeouts (80), and innings pitched (79.1) in the postseason.

Martinez's last game for the Red Sox was in the 2004 World Series, in which he allowed the Cardinals no runs in seven innings in the club's 4-1 win in Game 3. His last game in the majors was also in the World Series, in 2009, as Philadelphia lost to the New York Yankees.
