Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/17 [SOX & Dawgs]

As everyone knows by now, Texy over at Center Field is no longer doing gameday threads. Since I was a frequent visitor to there and know how much everyone enjoyed them, I decided to host them this year.

So for those who haven’t been here before, welcome. For those, who have, welcome back!! I hope you enjoy my new home here at Bloguin.

James Shields will start the regularly scheduled game for the Rays. He has no record in two starts this season with a 3.97 ERA. He made four starts against the Red Sox in 2009 going 1-3 with a 5.47 ERA. Shields has made 12 career starts against the Red Sox and is 3-7 with a 5.32 ERA. Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 4/17

By the looks of the above picture, you would think Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was pissed about the game on Friday night being suspended. Instead he was just reacting after being called out at first base on a close play in the 5th inning.

That’s right folks, the game against the Tampa Bay Rays was suspended with the score tied 1-1 and the Red Sox coming to bat in the bottom of the 9th. The game will be resumed on Saturday night at 7:10 p.m. with the regularly scheduled game starting 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended one.

It feels weird to be talking about a game that hasn’t ended yet but we must move forward as much as we can.

Josh Beckett started this one for the Red Sox and was stellar on the mound. He had a great command of all his pitches and his offspeed stuff was nasty. Ironically enough, this was Beckett’s second straight start with Jason Varitek at catcher and his second good start in a row.

Given the fact that Tek hit a solo home run at the plate, you have to wonder if this combo will work together for the season. It makes sense as there is just no way Victor Martinez can catch every day. You can still work VMart into the lineup though when Tek’s in there.

With David Ortiz continuing to struggle (he has a double so far in the game), you can always put VMart at DH. Or if Adrian Beltre needs a day off, you move Youk to third and have VMart play first.

With the way Beckett was dominating, he probably should have won this game. But an error by Marco Scutaro and a miscue by Beltre led to the Rays only run.

After Beckett retired the first two batters of the third, Carl Crawford reached on the error by Scutaro. Crawford then stole second base and came home an infield single by Ben Zobrist that Beltre apparently lost in the lights. It went off his glove and carromed into short center.

Tek’s home run tied it up in the 5th and the Red Sox had a chance to take the lead in the 6th but Kevin Youkilis was gunned down at home on a Big Papi double. Since there were no outs, it probably would have been wise of third base coach Tim Bogar to hold Youk up but given the circumstances, he tried to score him knowing it would take a perfect relay throw to get him.

Unfortunately it didn’t work out for the Red Sox.

We’ll be back later with the lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day but keep reading for today’s links.

After going 3-3 on the past road trip, the Boston Red Sox return home to the friendly confines of Fenway Park to host the Tampa Bay Rays in a four-game set.

Tonight’s game will start at 7:10 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game will be broadcast on Sun Sports in the Rays television market. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Josh Beckett makes the start for the Red Sox tonight. In two previous starts this season, he is 1-0 with a 6.17 ERA. In five starts against the Rays in 2009, Beckett was 2-1 with a 5.02 ERA. He’s made 15 career starts against the Rays and is 7-4 with a 3.68 ERA.

Wade Davis makes his second career start against the Red Sox for Joe Maddon. In his second career MLB start, the Red Sox got to him for eight runs in just 2 2/3 innings as he took the loss. Ironically enough, that start was also against Beckett.

Maya Moore Named 2010 Honda Award Winner for Women’s Basketball

Here’s one final press release from the UConn Athletics Communications Department. This one concerns UConn Huskies junior All-American  Maya Moore being named the 2010 winner of the Honda Award for Women’s Basketball:

Maya Moore - Hartford Courant photoSTORRS, Conn. – Maya Moore  has won the 2010 Honda Sports Award in basketball, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport.

This is the third year in a row that Moore has been nominated for the award. The award is based on the results of national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 34th year. Moore’s win, coming on the heels of being named the NCAA Final Four MVP, marks the eighth time that a University of Connecticut basketball player has been honored with the award.

Past Honda Sports Award winners from the school include Rebecca Lobo and Maya’s former teammate Renee Montgomery, who won last year. (See below for list of past winners.)

The Honda Sports Award is given annually to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports, along with automatic nomination for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Moore was voted over three other nominees for the 2010 award, including her teammate, senior Tina Charles. The other two nominees were Kelsey Griffin, a senior at the University of Nebraska and Nnemkadi Ogwumike, a Stanford University sophomore. The candidates were selected by the NCAA Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

“I’m very honored and excited to celebrate winning the Honda Sports Award along with a national championship with my teammates,” Moore said. “I thank God for blessing me with the best and most committed coaches and staff in the country and my teammates who give their best everyday.”

Moore, who grew up in Lawrenceville, Georgia, helped her team achieve an NCAA record of 78 wins this year, as well as its sixth undefeated season and second straight NCAA National Championship. She received both the 2010 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player and Dayton Regional’s Most Outstanding Player award and is a three-time AP First Team All-American. Moore ended this season averaging 18.9 points and 8.3 rebounds, scoring in double figures 34 times. She finished the 2009-10 season with 736 points, the second most points scored in a season by a UConn player only to herself (754 pts in 2008-09). So far in her career, Moore has scored 2168 points, with 963 rebounds and 243 three-pointers. She is also the first junior in the program’s history to score over 2000 points.

Previous Honda Sports Award winners from the University of Connecticut for basketball include: Rebecca Lobo (1995), Jennifer Rizzotti (1996), Shea Ralph (2000), Sue Bird (2002), Diana Taurasi (2003, ’04) and Renee Montgomery (2009). Both Lobo and Rizzotti went on to win the Honda-Broderick Cup as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Renee Montgomery (2009). Both Lobo and Rizzotti went on to win the Honda-Broderick Cup as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.

Previously announced Honda Sports Award recipients include University of Illinois’ Angela Bizzarri for cross country, Katie O’Donnell from the University of Maryland for field hockey, Whitney Engen from the University of North Carolina for soccer, Megan Hodge from Penn State University for volleyball and Julia Smit from Stanford University for swimming & diving. Honda Award winners in golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, softball, tennis and track & field will be announced in the coming months. The Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year will be determined by separate balloting involving all NCAA-member institutions and the winner will receive the Honda-Broderick Cup in June 2010.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. sponsors the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Program.
