UConn Football Announces 2010 Captains; Jasper Howard Honorary Captain

Here’s a press release from the UConn Athletic Communications Department about the announcement of the UConn Football Captains for 2010:

UConn FootballSTORRS, Conn. – Redshirt senior offensive lineman Zach Hurd (Waterford, Conn.), redshirt senior linebacker Scott Lutrus (Brookfield, Conn.), redshirt junior defensive lineman Kendall Reyes (Nashua, N.H.) and senior fullback Anthony Sherman (North Attleboro, Mass.) will be the captains of the 2010 University of Connecticut football team as announced by head coach Randy Edsall, Thursday.

Jasper Howard, the UConn football player who passed away on October 18, 2009, and would have been a senior in 2010 was named an honorary captain for the season.

Lutrus and Sherman are both two-time captains for the Huskies after serving as captain during the 2009 season. They become the two-time captain duo since Darius Butler and D.J. Hernandez in 2008.

Hurd was a First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2009 after playing and starting in all 13 games on the season at left guard. He has started in 26-straight games entering his senior season, 13 at right guard during his sophomore year and 13 at left guard in his junior season. He was awarded the offensive game ball along with his fellow offensive lineman after the Notre Dame game on Nov. 21 for an outstanding job in leading the way for Andre Dixon and Jordan Todman to rush for a combined 244 yards and two touchdowns, including the gamewinner in double overtime.

Reyes is a new addition to the Husky captain ranks and is the lone junior captain for UConn. Reyes has started 16 games in his first two years with the team on the defensive line, including 12 in 2009. The New Hampshire native finished 2009 with 37 tackles, six TFL and three sacks for 14 yards. Six of his 37 tackles came in a win against Syracuse.

The fourth captain for the Huskies in 2010 is Sherman who, like Lutrus, will be returning for his second year as a team leader. Sherman, the lone true senior in the captain ranks, earned a starting role in his sophomore season and has played in each and every game for UConn since he stepped foot on campus, starting in 20 of them. A tailback, Sherman has totaled 60 rushing yards and 350 receiving yards in his career. He is also an outstanding player on special teams, notching 49 career tackles, 33 unassisted.

Hurd, Lutrus, Reyes, Sherman and the 2010 Huskies will begin their season on September 4 on center stage when they head to Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines.

Late Morning Red Sox Delight – 4/15

Tim Wakefield (L), Francisco Liriano (R) - AP Photo

After a nice effort from John Lackey on Wednesday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox look to gain another series victory, this time against the Minnesota Twins.

This afternoon’s game will start at 1:10 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game can be seen in the Twins television market on FOX Sports North. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Tim Wakefield looks to get closer to Cy Young and Rogers Clemens on the all-time Red Sox wins list for Terry Francona. Wake has made one start in 2010 as he allowed two runs in seven innings against the Royals picking up a no decision. He made one start against the Twins getting the win after giving up a run in seven innings. He’s made 26 appearances (23 starts) against the Twins in his career and is 14-5 with a 4.16 ERA and two saves. He made 12 career starts at the Metrodome and was 7-4 with a 4.54 ERA.

Francisco Liriano looks to prevent the Red Sox from getting their first series win in Minnesota since 2007. He’s made two career starts against the Red Sox, with both coming in 2009, and is 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA.

Hermida’s 3-Run Double Lifts Sox To Win

Boston Red Sox left fielder Jeremy Hermida, right, is congratulated by Adrian Beltre after the Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-3 in a baseball game Wednesday, April 14, 2010 in Minneapolis.(AP Photo/Andy King)

Jeremy Hermida came over to the Boston Red Sox with no idea how much playing time he’d receive during the 2010 season. But with Jacoby Ellsbury on the shelf with bruised ribs, Hermida has been making the most of his time.

Hermida’s 3-run double in the 8th inning was the difference as the Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 6-3 in front of 38,164 at Target Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Sox defeated the Twins 6-3.(AP Photo/Andy King)The Red Sox get back to .500 (4-4) with the win while the Twins fall to 6-3.

John Lackey started this one for the Red Sox and didn’t have the best of outings but he was still good enough to pick up his first win in a Red Sox uniform. He struggled with his curveball as he uncharateristically walked four batters. He allowed two runs on seven hits and those four walks with two strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Hideki Okajima walked one in an a 1/3 of an inning while Daniel Bard struggled in his inning. He gave up a run on two hits. Despite walking two, Jonathan Papelbon picked up his third save of the season.

The top three in the Red Sox line up all had two hits as Marco Scutaro, Dustin Pedroia and Victor Martinez had two hits. Pedroia had two RBIs, one on a double and one on his team-leading fourth home run of the season. Scutaro also added an RBI.

David Ortiz continues to struggle as he struck again two more times but did manage a double.

The Red Sox got out of the gates quickly in the 1st as Scutaro led off with a single and came home on Pedroia’s double which was misplayed by left fielder Delmon Young. Scutaro’s RBI single in the 2nd gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

The Twins tied it up in the 3rd on back-to-back hits by Orlando Hudson and Joe Mauer but Pedroia’s home run in the 5th gave the Red Sox the lead back.

Hermida’s bases clearing double in the 8th pushed the Red Sox lead to 6-2. Bard would allow a solo home run to Michael Cuddyer in the 8th but that would end the scoring for the afternoon at new Target Field.

The Red Sox will look to take the series on Thursday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. when Tim Wakefield and Francisco Liriano square off on the bump.

If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

As a member of the Angels, he made one start in 2009 against the Twins, picking up the win after allowing two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. He’s faced 14 times in his career and is 6-5 with a 3.75 ERA. In six career starts at the Metrodome, he was 3-2 with a 4.30 ERA.
