Red Sox News & Notes – 6/1

If Alfredo Aceves wanted to stay in the Boston Red Sox starting rotation when John Lackey returns, he really has a funny way of showing it. He of the 16-1 career record looked more like a pitcher who was 1-16 in his career in a 10-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Alfredo Aceves(notes) delivers to the Chicago White Sox in the first inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park, Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in Boston .Aceves had a chance to put a little pressure on Tim Wakefield but any chance of that happening quickly changed in the second inning when the White Sox tagged him for four runs. And all that came after Aceves sent the White Sox down in order on seven pitches in the 1st inning.

Obviously he didn’t locate the ball well. He left a lot of pitches out in the strike zone and the ChiSox hitters took full advantage of that. All told, Aceves was charged with eight runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks in 5+ innings. He started the day with an ERA of 2.22 but finished the evening with his ERA sitting at 3.51.

Of course it didn’t help Aceves that the Red Sox were facing a pitcher in Philip Humber who they’ve never seen before. And nine out of 10 times when that happens, the Red Sox bats are usually stymied.

Until the 8th inning, the only run the Red Sox were able to muster against Humber was a home run from the Captain, Jason Varitek, in the third inning. It seemed like whenever Humber would allow a base runner, he would find a way out of it.

He worked around an Adrian Gonzalez double in the 4th. He was also able to get double plays in the 5th and 6th innings. And when he allowed two hits in the 7th to David Ortiz and Jed Lowrie, he recovered to strikeout J.D. Drew to end the threat.

The one thing about this Red Sox team is they never quit.

They managed to make his a ballgame in the 8th inning when they scored four runs to cut the deficit from 10-1 to 10-5. The big blow of the inning was Big Papi’s three-run blast. They added two more in the 9th and forced Ozzie Guillen to bring in his closer Chris with the tying run on deck in Kevin Youkilis.

But Sale made quick work of Gonzalez by striking him out to end the rally and the month of May for the local nine.

While the Red Sox ended the month with three straight losses, it was still a far better month than April was. The worst part about the three straight losses is the fact the Yankees have won their past three games and now have taken a one-game lead over the Red Sox and a 1.5 game lead over the Rays in the AL East.

But with a new month at end, it’s time for the Red Sox to wipe the slate clean and make June an even better month than May was. They have the tools to do it. It just comes down to whether or not they can use them properly.

Beckett’s Going To Be a Dad

Before you know it, the Boston Red Sox are going to have a clubhouse full of little rugrats running around.

: Boston Red Sox Pitcher Josh Beckett and Holly Fisher attend the CMT Artists of the Year at The Factory on November 30, 2010 in Franklin, Tennessee. The latest to join the Red Sox baby boom is Josh Beckett.

The girls at the Inside Track spoke with Beckett’s wife Holly Fisher about her being pregnant with the couple’s first child. According to Fisher, they’ll be having a girl.

Fisher is due in late September which as the article points out is about when the Red Sox would be starting the playoffs. So let’s hope the Beckett’s will be celebrating the birth of their daughter and playoff berth in September.

Congrats from us here to Josh and Holly on their good news.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/31

Philip Humber (L), Alfredo Aceves (R)

After falling last night, the Boston Red Sox look to close out the month of May with their 20th win of the month in game two of a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park.

Tonight’s game will start at 7:10 p.m. and will be televised on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the White Sox television market, you can watch the game on WCIU.  And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Alfredo Aceves looks to put together another good outing in his 14th appearance (third start) of 2011. In his previous 13 appearances (two starts) Aceves is 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA. He made two appearances against the White Sox in 2010 as a member of the Yankees and was 1-0 with 0.00 ERA (0 ER/2 IP). He’s made five career appearances (one start) against the south siders in his career and is 2-0 with a 4.05 ERA (6 ER/13.1 IP).

Rookie Philip Humber makes his 10th start of 2011 for the always outspoken Ozzie Guillen. In his previous nine starts, Humber is 3-3 with a 2.85 ERA.  This will be his first career start against the Boston Red Sox.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/31

As Boston Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia(notes) looks down, starting pitcher Jon Lester(notes) throws his gum after giving up a two-run single to Chicago White Sox's Alexei Ramirez(notes) during the sixth inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston Monday, May 30, 2011.

After so-so starts from Clay Buchholz and Josh Beckett on Sunday, the Boston Red Sox were expecting Jon Lester to put things back in order for the starting rotation and the local nine. After a few crappy starts of his own, Lester had put together a good outing in his last start.

But instead of pitching like we know he’s capable of, Lester had his own command issues on Monday night as the Red Sox fell to the Chicago White Sox 7-3.

Lester was all over the places with his pitches. He may have gotten squeezed one or two times from the home plate umpire but had he had been consistent with his pitches, he might have gotten those calls.

The cutter, which is his go to pitch, didn’t really have the action on it we are accustomed to. Instead, it looked more like a slider. And with those command issues, the White Sox were able to break open a 3-3 game with four runs in the 6th inning.

Should we be worried about the bad starts from Lester, Buchholz and Beckett? Not at all.

The great thing about these three is their ability to put it in the past. They’ll work out the kinks before they toe the slab again. Due to the off day and the fact that Buchholz and Beckett both pitched in the doubleheader on Sunday, Lester will get an extra couple of days of rest so he’ll definitely have the time to put things back together.

Offensively, the Red Sox weren’t able to do much against Jake Peavy. It’s not like Peavy was overpowering but he was able to get the Red Sox hitters to hit the ball right at his defenders.

Adrian Gonzalez came through with two hits against his former teammate in San Diego, including a solo home run in the first. David Ortiz also had two hits while Dustin Pedroia brought in the other runs with an RBI double in the third inning that tied the game at three.

We can’t expect the Red Sox to maintain their current pace but there’s no doubt they certainly can do it. These past two games are just a little bump in the road.

Hopefully Alfredo Aceves can keep doing what he’s been doing while getting some support from the bats tonight. A great start tonight by Aceves would also give Terry Francona something to think about when John Lackey returns to the hill on June 5th.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/30

Jake Peavy (L), Jon Lester (R)

After going 5-2 on a seven-game road trip, the Boston Red Sox return home for a six-game, seven-day homestand that begins tonight as they’ll entertain the Chicago White Sox in a three-game set at Fenway Park.

Tonight’s game will start at 7:10 p.m. and will be televised on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the White Sox television market, you can watch the game on CSN Chicago. And if you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as the game will be televised on the MLB Network (not in Red Sox or White Sox television markets). And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester goes in search of a MLB-leading eighth win in his 12th start of 2011. In his previous 11 starts, Lester is 7-1 with a 3.36 ERA.  He made one start against the White Sox in 2010 taking the loss after allowing eight earned runs in four innings of work. Lester has made five career starts against the south side squad from Chicago and is 2-2 with a 4.99 ERA. One of those starts has come at the Fens where he has no record with a 4.05 ERA (3 ER/6.2 IP).

Jake Peavy makes his fourth start of 2011 since returning from the disabled list. In his previous three starts, Peavy is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA. Peavy has made just one career start against the Red Sox and that came as a member of the San Diego Padres. In that outing back in 2007, he took the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits in five innings of work. This will be his first career start at Fenway Park.

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/30

Boston Red Sox's David Ortiz, right, is congratulated in the dugout after hitting a solo home run in the ninth inning of the first baseball game of a doubleheader on Sunday, May 29, 2011, in Detroit.

Despite Clay Buchholz and Josh Beckett not being at their best on Sunday, the Boston Red Sox still were able to get a split of their day-night doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers in the Motor City.

The visiting nine won the first game when David Ortiz hit a solo home run off of Tigers closer Jose Valverde. But in the second game, they ran into the buzzsaw that is Justin Verlander.

Buchholz had cruised through the first three innings of game one before Andy Dirks hit a home run to cut the lead to 3-1. After that he labored through the rest of the start, not pitching with the same oomph he had before. It turned out that Buchholz had blister on his toe and some back spasms.

While those two minor injuries slowed him down, he still managed to give the Red Sox six innings. His final inning though was a rough one as Brennan Boesch hit a no doubt home run with one out. Three batters later, Jhonny Peralta singled in Miguel Cabrera with the tying run.

The Red Sox had gotten that lead on a sac fly from Adrian Gonzalez in the first inning and solo home runs by Dustin Pedroia and Mike Cameron. But Ortiz made Terry Francona look a genius in the 9th when he hit the home run.

In his only plate appearance against Valverde, Ortiz hit a grand slam. And after his second at-bat against him, Big Papi had two home runs. Valverde would exact some revenge in the second game getting Ortiz to ground out.

The back injury to Buchholz is something to watch going forward. After his slow start to the season, he has turned things around. But with back injuries, they can creep up on you at anytime. With Clay under contract for the foreseeable future, you know the Red Sox will be very careful with him.

There’s no telling what could have happened in the second game had Beckett not had command issues during his six innings. Then again, it also tells you how good he is that despite issuing a season-high five walks, he limited the damage after allowing two first inning runs.

With Verlander dealing and shutting down the Red Sox offense, Beckett had no choice but to do his best to shut down the Tigers. His former batterymate Victor Martinez did touch him up for three hits. Beckett finished the evening game with six innings pitched, three runs allowed on five hits and the five walks to go with five strikeouts.

The Red Sox were able to make contact off of Verlander. Unfortunately for them though, most of the balls they did get the bat on were hit right at people.

Amazingly enough, we were also able to watch the second game. MLB & ESPN relented from the exclusivity of Sunday Night Baseball by allowing the game to be seen in the Red Sox and Tigers television markets as well as the out-of-towners on MLB.tv.

When you look back on the seven-game road trip, the Red Sox went 5-2 with five straight wins. Those five wins on the road trip helped them climb into first place as they enjoy a one-game advantage on the New York Yankees and a 1.5 game lead on the the Tampa Bay Rays. They could have easily been 6-1 had Daniel Bard not had the meltdown in the first game against the Cleveland Indians.

So you can call the two-team, seven-game road trip through the AL Central a success. Now they’ll head home for three more against another AL Central team, the Chicago White Sox.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
