Morning Red Sox Delight – 9/11

Jon Lester (L), James Shields (R)

After losing their fourth game in a row, including a second straight game against the Tampa Bay Rays last night, the Boston Red Sox look to avoid a sweep this afternoon at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rays television market, you can catch the game on Sun Sports. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester looks to get the Red Sox back into the win column in his 28th start of 2011. In his previous 27 starts, Lester is 15-6 with a 2.93 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Rays this season and is 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA (4 ER/14 IP). Lester has made 18 career starts against the Rays and is 10-4 with a 3.65 ERA.  He’s enjoyed good success at the Trop where he is 4-0 with a 2.92 ERA in six starts.

James Shields looks to pull the Rays even closer in the AL Wild Card standings in his 30th start of 2011. In his previous 29 starts, Shields is 14-10 with a 2.77 ERA. He’s made three starts against the Red Sox and is 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA (9 ER/23 IP). He has made 19 career starts against the Red Sox and is 6-11 with a 4.84 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/11

The Tampa Bay Rays celebrate the win against the Boston Red Sox after the game on September 10, 2011 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Another game, another loss by the Boston Red Sox. Of course this one was a little more heartbreaking than the last one.

After battling back in the 9th inning with back-to-back home runs by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jacoby Ellsbury that tied the game, Evan Longoria‘s walkoff single in the 11th gave the Tampa Bay Rays a 6-5 win.

With the New York Yankees falling again last night, the Red Sox remain 2.5 games behind them for first place in the AL East. But, it’s quickly becoming a race again as the Rays are now 4.5 games behind the Red Sox in the AL Wild Card standings. And let’s not overlook the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as they are just five games back.

I honestly don’t have much else to say right now other than it’s a frustrating time to be a Red Sox fan. The best thing we can do right now though is sit back and continue to support them through these tough times. They deserve that from us as fans.

We’ll be back in a short while with this afternoon’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links below by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/10

Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka(notes) #18 of the Boston Red Sox watches his team against the Tampa Bay Rays during the game at Tropicana Field on September 9, 2011 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

When the Tampa Bay Rays came to town back in mid-August for a brief three-game two-day set against the Boston Red Sox, two of the three Rays starters pitched complete games. The only one of three who didn’t was David Price.

Now Ian, why is this significant. Well sit down, take a sip of your coffee and I’ll explain.

The Red Sox are slumping right now. There’s no two ways about it. Last night against the Rays, they were facing Wade Davis who had struggled against them in his three career starts versus the Red Sox.

But after nine innings of baseball at Tropicana Field, Davis matched what two of his teammates had done back in August by firing a complete game win in the Rays 7-2 win last night.

With the starting rotation falling apart in front of our eyes and playing without the services of Kevin Youkilis, who was back in Boston getting his hip looked and now also has a sports hernia, the Red Sox needed John Lackey to give them some innings. The bullpen has been taxed over this slump as well so the more innings the better for Terry Francona’s squad.

Instead, Lackey got shelled for five runs in three innings of work and was taken out of the game before the start of the 4th inning. He had been hit by a John Jaso liner in the shin so that was the “excuse” the Red Sox used in taking him out of the game.

It’s really hard to say a player on your favorite team sucks but it’s time to face facts and say that Lackey does. I understand he’s had some off field issues with the health of his smoking hot wife and sure he’s a trooper for trying to pitch through it.

But there’s come a point where you’re hurting the team and that’s what Lackey is doing right now.

Erik Bedard has a lat strain on top of his knee issues. Josh Beckett is battling an ankle injury. Tim Wakefield is stuck right now on a neverending quest for 200 wins. Andrew Miller is well, being the inconsistent Andrew Miller that the Red Sox signed with hopes of turning things around for him. Clay Buchholz still hasn’t thrown off the mound but is progressing towards that in not so distant near future.

Knock on wood, Jon Lester is the only starter from the original starting rotation in 2011. So if the Red Sox were to make the 2011 postseason, they trail the Yankees by 2.5 games and only lead the Rays by 5.5 games in the AL Wild Card, you can’t even say who is going to start for the Red Sox in the postseason.

Last night on Twitter, I joked that the Red Sox postseason rotation could be Lester, Beckett and Scott Atchison. What I should have really said was the Red Sox postseason rotation might be Lester, Atchison and Darnell McDonald.

Yup folks things are that bad for the Red Sox right now. And you can bet your bottom dollar that a win tonight would be huge for the moral of the Red Sox.

Because if not, it might to start invoke memories of 1978 for those of you were on this beautiful green Earth back then.

We’ll be back in a later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links below by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

UConn Agrees To Play In Second Edition Of Carrier Classic Basketball Game

Here’s the release from UConn about the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team participating in the 2012 Carrier Classic:

Three-time national champion Connecticut has signed a deal with the Morale Entertainment Foundation to play in the second edition of the Carrier Classic basketball game in 2012 aboard an aircraft carrier on San Diego Bay.

Mike Whalen, director of the Morale Entertainment Foundation, said Friday that UConn’s opponent could be Kansas, Texas, Florida, Arizona or Illinois. That game will be played Nov. 9, 2012.

Carrier ClassicThe inaugural Carrier Classic will be played this Nov. 11 _ Veterans Day _ between North Carolina and Michigan State on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson at North Island Naval Air Station, across the bay from downtown San Diego. The Carl Vinson and its sailors have attracted considerable attention since early May, when the carrier was used to bury Osama bin Laden at sea after he was killed by Navy SEALs.

It will be the first NCAA hoops game on an active flat top. The court will be surrounded by stadium-style seating for about 7,000 fans, with most of the tickets going to active military personnel.

Coach Jim Calhoun and UConn President Susan Herbst said it’s an honor to be picked for the second Carrier Classic. Organizers won’t know until much closer to that game which carrier it will be held on.

“I think it’s an incredible honor,” Calhoun said in a phone interview. “I think it’s an event that hopefully will give our kids a better understanding of just how important our country is.”

Calhoun said he’s made several overseas trips to visit troops, and that playing on a ship will be just as important.

“These are all great learning experiences. I can’t imagine a better learning experience than to see those guys on that ship, who are protecting our country,” he said.

Herbst said one of UConn’s trustees who knew Whalen suggested she pursue a spot in the game.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

“To me, it sounded like the coolest thing, to be able to celebrate our veterans on the aircraft carrier,” Herbst said. “It sounded so unique and amazing that we just couldn’t pass it up. To both celebrate our veterans and also the men and women who are in the service now is central to our mission at UConn. We think this really fits with our values and our mission.”

Calhoun’s teams have won national titles _ including the 2011 championship behind Kemba Walker in front of massive crowds. The coach said it shouldn’t be much different playing in such a unique setting.

“It’s a basketball game, and I’m assuming everything will be taken care of. As long as the baskets are 10 feet high, we’ll be more than fine,” Calhoun said.

Also Friday, former Congressmen Jim Marshall of Georgia and Gene Taylor of Mississippi were named co-chairmen of the 2011 Carrier Classic.

Morale Entertainment Foundation, which hopes to help raise the visibility of the Navy by organizing the Carrier Classic, brings notable Americans, such as former astronauts Neil Armstrong, Gene Cernan and Jim Lovell, and coaches and race car drivers to visit troops in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

“Let’s face it, there are some crummy places like Iraq and Afghanistan, and they do appreciate the visits,” Taylor said. “They want to see a friendly face. I’ve got to believe that for an 18- or 19-year-old kid to meet Mack Brown or a driver is a great thrill.

“We just can’t do enough for those guys,” Taylor said. “If you think about life on a carrier, they’re at sea for months at a time. To make their life easier when they’re home is a great thing. I think this will be a great opportunity for the troops on the ship that day to see a great basketball game.”

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 9/9

John Lackey (L), Wade Davis (R)

After losing three-of-four in north of the border, the Boston Red Sox return to the lower 48 states as they try to get back on track. Tonight, they’ll kickoff the first of a three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL (I guess the St. Pete Rays didn’t work for a team name).

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rays television market, you can catch the game on Sun Sports. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

John Lackey hopes he doesn’t suck tonight in his 25th start of 2011. In his previous 24 starts of suckiness, Lackey is 12-11 with 6.11 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Rays this season and is 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA. Overall in his career, he’s enjoyed good success against them (surprising considering his suckiness this year) and is 12-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 18 starts. He does suck at the Trop though (oh joy!) as he is 4-3 with a 5.98 ERA in seven starts.

Wade Davis is hoping Lackey sucks tonight as he goes in search of his 10th win in his 26th start of the season. In his previous 25 starts, Davis is 9-8 with a 4.50 ERA. He has not faced the Red Sox this season and fortunately for Lackey and his suckiness, Davis hasn’t been much better against the Red Sox in his career. In three career starts against them, Davis is 0-2 with an 11.12 ERA (14 ER/11.1 IP).
