Q&A With Open ‘Dores

UConn Huskies @ Vanderbilt Commodores

With the UConn Huskies heading to Nashville, TN to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday night, I reached out to Jace from Open ‘Dores, a Vanderbilt blog.

This way as UConn fans, we could get an “inside” perspective of the Vanderbilt football team before the game on Saturday night. Thanks to Jace for taking the time to answer the questions I presented.

1. What has new head coach James Franklin brought to the table for the Commodores?

OD – James Franklin has brought a plethora of changes to our team. He, along with his well put together coaching staff, have brought a refreshing change in the culture, playbook, and depth chart that Commodore fans have been desiring for many years. Our team is more energized and inspired than ever before with the attitude Franklin brings. And what the fans like more than anything is that he came to campus with the full intention to play the best players and call the best plays for his situation. The new coaching staff showed absolutely no fear in seating long-time starters and changing the positions of players. Also, the coaches present a completely reengineered playbook that contains a new Wildcat formation and actually takes advantage of a lead blocking, pass catching fullback.

2. How much of a revenge factor will there be on Saturday after last year’s loss to UConn?

OD – Starting tight end Brandon Barden summed it up well earlier this week when he said the team was “pissed” after losing last year. I imagine most of the players feel that way. Quarterback Larry Smith especially, who was having one of his better games of the season before the team flopped in that  second half. The offensive line should be pretty upset about their performance in our game last year as well. So, yeah, there should be a rather strong revenge factor in this one.

3. How will the Vandy defense try and stop the UConn running game with their big offensive line?

OD – I could certainly see the coaches working out some blitzing packages, because we saw a lot more of aggressiveness out our defense in that game against Elon than we have seen from any Vandy team in quite some time. Our defense revolves around the middle linebacker and football genius

Chris Marve. He has a knack for sniffing out offensive plays and is much more healthy than he ever was last season. It is also worth mentioning that our defensive line should be much improved as opposed to last season. James Franklin always mentions the guys on our line as a pleasant surprise    every practice- although our stats against Elon do not really reflect as so.

4. How can UConn stop the Vandy offense?

OD – All of that will be determined up front. I must admit that I worry if our offensive line can contain guys like Kendall Reyes on the Connecticut defensive line. Our team did add a lot depth up front, and the big guys played rather well in game one, the unit as a whole is far from proving anything. And if the Huskies create a lot of havoc up front, it is very likely that Larry Smith will fold not too much after the offensive line folds.

5. Give me one or two players who we might not have heard of that may stick out during the game?

OD – WR Jordan Matthews and LB Chase Garnham could very well make some noise. Matthews was not even thinking about seeing the field the last time the Huskies saw the Commodores. However, he closed out last season with some pretty fantastic games and impressed the new coaching staff even more this offseason. Garnham might have seen one snap against UConn last season, but he is expected to be a huge contributor for the Commodore defense after having a great offseason himself and getting 6 tackles in the opener. Chris Boyd, another wide receiver, is also worth mentioning. I did not want to say two guys who play the same position, but look out for the redshirt freshman Boyd if the offensive line can give Larry Smith time to get the passing attack going.

Once again, thanks to Jace for taking the time to answer my questions. Be sure to check out Open ‘Dores for your Vanderbilt sports needs.

Last Week:

The Huskies won their season opener 35-3 over the Fordham Rams. The Commodores beat the Elon Phoenix 45-14.

History:

Saturday’s game will be the third meeting between UConn and Vanderbilt as each team has won a game. Vanderbilt beat the Huskies 28-24 in Nashville. UConn beat the Commodores last year at the Rent 40-21.

Connections:

  • Paul Pasqualoni’s first career game at Syracuse came with a 37-10 win vs. Vanderbilt at the Carrier Dome on Sept. 7, 1991.
  • There are no players on the UConn roster from the state of Tennessee and no players from Connecticut on the Vandy roster.
  • Commodore defensive coordinator Bob Shoop faced UConn as an assistant at BC (2002), as defensive coordinator at Yale (1994-96), as DB coach at Northeastern (1992) and as a GA at Yale (1989)…As a player at Yale, Shoop faced the Huskies from 1984-87.
  • VU assistant Chris Beatty faced the Huskies the last three years as an assistant at West Virginia as did assistant Herb Hand, while at West Virginia in 2004-06.
  • Defensive line coach Sean Spencer is a Hartford native and coached instate at Trinity (1998-2000) and Wesleyan (1995-96).
  • Vanderbilt first-year head coach James Franklin and new Commodore offensive coordinator John Donovan were top offensive assistants at Maryland one year ago.
  • The defensive coordinator for that Terp squad, Don Brown, holds the same post at UConn this season under Coach Paul Pasqualoni.
  • A third Vanderbilt staffer, special teams coordinator-tight ends coach Charles Bankins, also served with Franklin, Donovan and Brown under Head Coach Ralph Friedgen at Maryland.
  • Vanderbilt sophomore safety Kenny Ladler was a teammate at Stephenson H.S. near Atlanta with UConn freshman DB David Stevenson.

Other UConn News:

Here is video from head coach Paul Pasqualoni’s press conference. Here’s the transcript of his press conference along with quotes from defensive coordinator Don Brown, QB coach Joe Moorhead and seven of the players.

Here is UConn’s depth chart for the game.

UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni has won more BIG EAST Conferece games (league contests only) than any other coach in history. Pasqualoni has 62 league wins from 1991-2004 while Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech is second with 57.

With Saturday’s opening win vs. Fordham, Pasqauloni is now tied for first in league history in overall wins with 108 and as Beamer also has 108.

Pasqualoni became the first Husky coach since 1923 to win his UConn coaching debut. The last coach to win a Husky debut was Sumner Dole in 1923.

Connecticut has an overall record of 2-2 against teams from the Southeastern Conference. They beat South Carolina in the 2009 Papa John’s Bowl and beat Vandy last year 40-21.

In terms of road openers, UConn has won four of its past five road openers — the exception being last year’s loss at Michigan to open the season. UConn is 5-4 in road openers since joining the FBS ranks.

The Huskies have put together a 21-29 road record since 2002.

In non-conference road affairs over that same span, Connecticut has posted a mark of 16-11 and has won eight of its last 12 such games, including 2009 wins over Ohio, Baylor and Notre Dame and 2011 losses to Michigan and Temple.

Connecticut boasts a 41-18 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002.

The Huskies have won 16 of their last 21 regular season non-league games overall with the only blemishes coming via a one-point loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North Carolina in 2008 and ‘09 and Michigan and Temple in ‘10.

UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010) and 1-0 (2011).

Over the past 103 games, UConn has outgained its opponent 64 times. This stretch, like many UConn trends, dates back to a 28-24 loss at Vanderbilt on Oct. 26, 2002.

UConn freshman Lyle McCombs’s 141 yards of rushing in his collegiate debut is the second-highest when compared against UConn’s top 10 career rushing leaders. The best mark belongs to Tony Jordan (No. 10), who had 144 yards vs. Northeastern to open the 1978 season.

A number of members of the 2011 Huskies were named to preseason “Watch Lists” for 2011. They are:

  • Sophomore Tight End Ryan Griffin (Londonberry, N.H.)
    • John Mackey Award Watch List
  • Senior Kicker Dave Teggart (Northborough, Mass.)
    • Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award
  • Senior Defensive Tackle Kendall Reyes (Nashua, N.H.)
    • Outland Trophy, given to the best interior lineman in the country
    • Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the best defensive player in the country;
    • Lombardi Award, given to the best offensive or defensive lineman in the country.
  • Senior center Moe Petrus (St. Laurent, Que.)
    • Outland Trophy
    • Lombardi Award
  • Senior offensive tackle Mike Ryan (Tamaqua, Pa.)
    • Lombardi Award

Here are the categories where UConn is ranked in the top 40 in the 2011 NCAA statistics. This week’s rankings only count games through Saturday:

  • Rushing Off. – 34th at 206.00 (Third in BIG EAST)

Individual leaders

  • Rushing – Lyle McCombs, T9th at 141.00 (2nd in BIG EAST)

Notes from this week’s opponent Vanderbilt:

Here’s video from Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin’s press conference (transcript). Here’s video from Vanderbilt QB Larry Smith, LB Tristan Strong and TE Brandon Barden (transcript).

Vanderbilt is 10-8-1 all-time vs. teams in the Big East Conference. The 2010 game against UConn was Vanderbilt’s last against a foe from the Big East.

Vanderbilt last played host to a Big East team in 2004 when Rutgers visited Nashville. That game ended in a Rutgers 37-24 win.

The Commodores have gone more than two seasons since putting together consecutive victories. The team’s most recent back-to-back wins against against Ole Miss and Auburn in the 2008 season.

In the last decade, the Commodores are 20-18 in games against out-of-league teams.

After Week 1, the Commodores rank among the SEC and NCAA leaders with a turnover margin of +3. They are tied for the conference lead and rank ninth in the NCAA.

Connecticut is one of nine teams on the Vandy schedule that played in a 2010 bowl game. UConn (Fiesta) and Arkansas (Sugar) are 2011 foes that enjoyed BCS bowl appearances. Other opponents this season that played in bowls last year are South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Army, Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee.

James Franklin is one of 13 NCAA FBS coaches across the nation who will be directing their first game as a head coach this season. Vanderbilt is one of 24 programs entering the year with a new head coach. One of the other 23 programs is Connecticut, where longtime Syracuse Head Coach Paul Pasqualoni guided the Huskies in their 2011 opener.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/9

Toronto Blue Jays' J.P. Arencibia(notes), right, celebrates a three-run home run with teammate David Cooper(notes) in the second inning of MLB game baseball action against the Boston Red Sox in Toronto, Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011

For two days in a row, the Boston Red Sox have a had a chance to pick up ground on the New York Yankees thanks to the Baltimore Orioles. But thanks to the Toronto Blue Jays, the bullpen meltdown on Wednesday and the unpredictability of an Andrew Miller start, they’ve failed to make up anything in those two days.

Actually the only thing we can pick up upon is the fact the Red Sox are slumping badly right now.

While Terry Francona always says that if Jacoby Ellsbury can get on base, good things happen. Well the same thing can be said for Dustin Pedroia. He is the little engine that could for them, the energy to this team. But when he goes 1-for-20 in the series against the Jays, you can see why the Red Sox only won one of the four games against the Jays.

Last night Pedroia came to the plate in the 9th as the tying run against Frank Francisco. Normally, he’s the man you want at the plate in that type of situation. But Francisco struck him out and ended the hopes of a comeback.

While you’d probably never see Pedroia pinch-hit for in any situation, you can ponder the thought of why Tito didn’t use Adrian Gonzalez in that situation (I’m just throwing that out there).

Sometimes I get the feeling that when Miller is out there, I’m watching a Daisuke Matsuzaka start because honestly you just don’t know what you’re going to get anymore.

He started out strongly after his callup, only to revert back to his old mechanics. Once he had figured things out, he looked good for a few starts. Now he’s back to struggling again.

Last night it was the long ball that cost.

The three-run homer by J.P. Arencibia in the 2nd inning put the Red Sox in the hole they would never recover from. Edwin Encarnacion added insult to injury with a solo shot in the 3rd inning.

And to make matters worse after the Red Sox had cut the lead down to 5-3 thanks to the red-hot Marco Scutaro in the 7th inning, Michael Bowden gave it right back when Eric Thames smoked a home run to right center.

Honestly, if this continues, the Red Sox will probably not win the division. It could also allow the Tampa Bay Rays to get right back into the AL Wild Card race which makes this three-game set this weekend in St. Pete all the more bigger.

We’ll be back in a later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links below by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 9/8

Andrew Miller (L), Ricky Romero (R)

After a rousing comeback win by the Toronto Blue Jays last night, the Boston Red Sox look for a split of the four-game series in the finale at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada tonight.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Blue Jays television market, you can catch the game on Rogers SportsNet. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Andrew Miller hopes for a better outing tonight than his last one in his 13th start (15th appearance) of the season. In 14 appearances (12 starts), Miller is 6-2 with a 5.27 ERA. His only career appearance against the Blue Jays came out of the bullpen in 2006 as a member of the Detroit Tigers. In that outing, he allowed one run in while recording an out. He’s never pitched at Rogers Centre.

Ricky Romero makes his 29th start of the season for the Jays. In his previous 28 starts, Romero is 13-10 with a 2.97 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox this season and is 0-2 with an 11.42 ERA (11 ER/8.2 IP). He’s struggled against the Red Sox in 11 career starts as he is 2-6 with an 8.08 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/8

Jose Molina(notes) #8, Edwin Encarnacion(notes) #10, Brett Lawrie(notes) #13 and Frank Francisco(notes) #50 of the Toronto Blue Jays celebrate the win against the Boston Red Sox during MLB action at the Rogers Centre September 7, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Before we get going here, I just wanted to take a quick moment to wish my father a happy birthday.

While baseball is a team game, the winners and losers are usually determined by individual performances. You’ll hear the players say they don’t care about individual stats as it all comes down to whether or not the team wins.

So who would you blame in last night’s 11-10 for the Boston Red Sox against the Toronto Blue Jays?

For starters, we can rule out the offense with one small exception you’ll see below. They did their job last night.

Do we place blame on Tim Wakefield? Or does it go to Daniel Bard? Perhaps it could go to manager Terry Francona for leaving Bard out there and not having Jonathan Papelbon but rather Matt Albers warming up during Bard’s meltdown? Or could it go to Francona for giving Mike Aviles the green light to steal down one run in the 9th inning?

The blame last night goes collectively to all of them. Hence how the outcome of a game comes down to the individual performances.

Wake was given 3-0 lead before he even stepped foot on the Rogers Centre mound last night. But by the end of the 2nd inning, the game was tied at three after a J.P. Arencibia two-run blast. By the end of the 3rd inning, the Red Sox found themselves trailing 5-3 after the Jays pulled off a double steal including home plate by Jose Bautista.

The offense bailed out Wake in the 4th culminated by Jacoby Ellsbury‘s three run blast that put them up 8-5. Dan Wheeler gave them a run back in the 7th to cut that lead down to 8-6.

And in the 8th, the combination of Bard and Albers put them in a hole they wouldn’t recover from. They would get two more runs in top of the 9th to get to within a run but Mike Aviles, pinch-running for Marco Scutaro, was thrown out trying to steal second and that was the end of the ballgame.

So case in point, you really can’t blame one individual but rather the whole collection. And wouldn’t that make the saying of win as a team, lose as a team, the correct statement to make about last night’s game.

I know there are people out there pissed at Bard for not helping preserve Wake’s 200th win. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. Bard showed us last night he’s human and has a bad game once in a while. Unfortunately it came on Wake’s turn.

But please don’t blame Bard alone.

How many times has he saved our asses out there?………. Yeah that’s what I thought.

We’ll be back in a later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links below by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 9/7

Tim Wakefield (L), Brandon Morrow (R)

After thumping the Toronto Blue Jays last night, the Boston Red Sox look to do it again in the third game of a four-game set tonight at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Tim Wakefield is hoping that lucky number 7 is his number as he makes his seventh try for career win No. 200 in his 20th start (30th appearance) of 2011 for the Red Sox. In his previous 29 appearances (19 starts), Wake is 6-6 with a 4.95 ERA. He is 0-3 with 4.97 in those six starts of trying to get to 200. He’s made three appearances (one start) against the Jays this season and is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA (4 ER/9.1 IP). He’s made 57 career appearances (43 starts) against Toronto and is 18-14 with a 3.87 ERA. 27 of those appearances (19 starts) have come in Toronto where he is 6-5 with a 4.55 ERA.

Brandon Morrow looks to prevent Wake from getting his 200th win in his 26th start of 2011. In his previous 25 starts, Morrow is 9-10 with a 4.78 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox this season and is 1-1 with a 12.54 ERA (13 ER/9.1 IP). He’s made 13 career appearances (five starts) against the visiting nine from Boston and is 1-2 with an 8.70 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/7

David Ortiz(notes) #34 and Adrian Gonzalez(notes) #28 of the Boston Red Sox celebrate run against the Toronto Blue Jays during MLB action at the Rogers Centre September 6, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Around 7:15 last night with the Boston Red Sox already enjoying a nice lead over the Toronto Blue Jays, the winds in the New England picked up. And that was because a collective sigh of relief was let out by Red Sox fans after the team issued this statement about the injured ankle of one Josh Beckett:

“Josh was evaluated today at the Massachusetts General Hospital by the Red Sox medical staff, including team foot and ankle specialist, Dr. George Theodore. Josh experienced pain in his ankle while pitching last night. His examination was consistent with an ankle sprain. An MRI was performed that confirmed no other injury to his ankle tendons, or his Achilles tendon. We will re-evaluate his symptoms and availability later this week.”

So the good news is that there’s nothing serious. Skipper Terry Francona said before the game that Beckett will miss his next start, which would have been against the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend.

The bad news about this is how much do we really trust the Red Sox medical staff. We’ve heard time and time again with certain players that there’s been nothing wrong only to see them out for a longer period of time. Let’s certainly hope this isn’t the case this time around. After all, the Red Sox are in the middle of a pennant chase right now and they need all their horses.

After the offense was virtually non-existent on Monday against the Jays, the team pounded out 20 hits last night in their 14-0 win. Before Jon Lester had even taken the mound, they had a 4-0 lead.

Almost everyone who started the game for the Red Sox was a hitter last night. The only member of the starting nine without a hit was Dustin Pedroia who was 0-for-5 with a strikeout.

Hitting 5th and 6th in the lineup last night, David Ortiz and Marco Scutaro led the way with four hits a piece. Scutaro also led the way with four RBIs with Big Papi added two RBIs. Adrian Gonzalez chipped in with three hits and two RBIs. Jacoby Ellsbury, Kevin Youkilis and Darnell McDonald all added two hits to the cause.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia‘s only hit of the night was good for a two-run homer while Josh Reddick‘s only hit of the night after taking over for Ellsbury was a solo home run.

Of the 20 hits by the Red Sox last night, nine of them went for doubles and 11 were for extra bases. They also reached base five times via the walk and were 9-for-25 (.360) with runners in scoring position.

We shouldn’t forget what Lester did either. He went seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and just one walk while striking out eleven Blue Jays. The only Blue Jays player who didn’t strikeout that started the game was Eric Thames.

Despite the big win though, the Red Sox remain 2.5 games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East after the Yanks beat the Orioles in a game that finished at about 2:15 a.m. The lead in the AL Wild Card is back up to eight games over the Tampa Bay Rays after they were shutout last night by C.J. Wilson.

Hopefully the Red Sox saved some of those hits and runs for Tim Wakefield who goes for career win No. 200 yet again tonight.
