2011-12 Big East Men’s Basketball Regular Season Awards

Here’s the release from UConn about the UConn Huskies men’s basketball players named to the various All-Big East Teams.

STORRS, Conn. – It was announced today by the BIG EAST Conference that UConn sophomore guard Jeremy Lamb has been named a member of the All-BIG EAST First Team. Lamb is the only sophomore selected to the six-member squad. Freshman Andre Drummond was selected to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.

Big East ConferenceLamb was a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team and has been selected throughout the season to the major National Player of the Year watch lists, including the Naismith Award and the Oscar Robertson Trophy.

As a freshman, Lamb earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.

Lamb has led UConn to an 18-12 record and the No. 9 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament set to begin Tuesday at Noon in Madison Square Garden when the Huskies face No. 16 DePaul.

On the season, Lamb has recorded 17.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. He’s shooting 48-percent from the field and 83-percent from the line heading into the postseason.

Lamb has had two 30-point performances and eight 20-point games this season. He’s hit double digits in all but three contests.

Marquette had two players selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team with the only unanimous selection, Jae Crowder, and Darius Johnson-Odom.

Freshman center Andre Drummond (Middletown, Conn.) earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Rookie squad. Drummond led all UConn players with 7.8 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. Drummond ranked third in the league in rebounding among freshmen and his 10.2 points per game placed him seventh in freshmen scoring.

Drummond’s 53-percent shooting led all freshmen with at least 50 field goals made while his 2.63 blocks per contest led all freshmen and ranked third in the BIG EAST Conference.

Drummond set a Calhoun-era record for freshmen at UConn with nine double-doubles, surpassing the old mark of seven held by all-time great Emeka Okafor in 2001-02.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis Named Big East Freshman of the Year

Normally when the Big East announces the end of the year major awards, the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team is taking most or all of them home. Well the times are a changing folks but they did pick up one.

Fresh off of winning eight Big East Freshman of the Week honors, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was named the Big East Freshman of the Year on Friday. It’s the second straight year that a Husky has won the honor as Bria Hartley was honored last year. KML was also named to the All-Big East second team as well as being the sixth man of the year.

Here’s the release from UConn:

HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman standout Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis has been honored as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, as announced by the league on Friday afternoon at the XL Center in Hartford.  Mosqueda-Lewis is the second-straight Husky to be so honored as teammate Bria Hartley garnered the award last season.

UConn's Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis drives to the basket against Rutgers at Gampel PavilionMosqueda-Lewis is the 12th Husky to be honored as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and the fifth Husky to earn the award in the last seven seasons.  Yesterday, the Anaheim Hills, Calif. native was selected as one of five freshmen to be named

Mosqueda-Lewis finished the regular season as the Huskies’ second leading scorer at 14.4 points per game and established a new freshman record for made 3-point field goals with 75.  Mosqueda-Lewis eclipsed the previous record of 73 set by Moore during the 2007-08 campaign.

The Anaheim Hills, Calif. native finished 12th in the BIG EAST in scoring and sixth in 3-point field goal percentage.  Both were tops among league freshmen.

Mosqueda-Lewis and the No. 3 seed Huskies (26-4, 13-3) are back in action on Sunday, March 4 when the team takes on either No. 6 Rutgers, No. 11 Cincinnati or No. 14 Marquette in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament.  Game time is set for approximately 8 p.m. at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.

2011-12 Big East Women’s Basketball Regular Season Awards

While we have to wait until 5 p.m. on Friday for the big awards, the Big East Conference announced four awards plus the All-Big East teams. And as you would expect, there’s a distinct UConn Huskies women’s basketball flavor to the teams.

Big East ConferenceSenior Tiffany Hayes was named to the All-Big East First Team and is joined by her teammate sophomore Bria Hartley. Freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was named to the All-Big East Second Team.

KML also picked up the Big East Sixth Man Award and should win Freshman of the Year honors tomorrow. She and Kiah Stokes were named to the All-Big East Freshman Team.

There was one other member of the Huskies honored for her play and that was sophomore Stefanie Dolson who received honorable mention honors.

Given what Kelly Faris does for the Huskies on a nightly basis, I’m really shocked she was not recognized by the coaches in the conference.

The Big East Player of the Year, Big East Freshman of the Year, Big East Coach of the Year and Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year are the four awards that will be announced tomorrow.
