Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 6/3/14

Jake Peavy (L), T.J. House (R)

After seeing their seven-game winning streak come to an end, the Boston Red Sox look to get back on track tonight in the middle game of a three-game set with the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Indians television market, you can catch the game on  SportsTime Ohio. If you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game as well. And if you can’t catch the game on television, you can always listen on the 2014 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jake Peavy makes his 12th start of the 2014 season. In his previous 11 starts, Peavy is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA. He won his only start of 2013 against the Indians as a member of the Chicago White Sox when he allowed one run in seven innings of work. He’s made 11 career starts against the Erie Warriors and is 5-3 with a 3.93 ERA. Six of those starts have come at the home of Flo where he is 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA.

Rookie T.J. House makes his third career start (fourth appearance) for skipper Terry Francona. In his previous three appearances (two starts), House is 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA. Tonight marks his first career start against the visiting nine.

NOTES:

Pitcher Brandon Workman of the Boston Red Sox has received a six-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area of Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays, following a warning, in the top of the sixth inning of the Friday, May 30th game at Fenway Park. Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards & Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Unless appealed, Workman’s suspension is scheduled to begin tonight, when the Red Sox are to continue their series at Cleveland. If appealed, Workman’s suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

Here is how the hitters have fared against the starting pitchers during the regular season over their careers.

Video: Old Friends End Red Sox Streak at Seven

Starting pitcher Justin Masterson #63 celebrates with second baseman Jason Kipnis #22 of the Cleveland Indians after the second inning against the Boston Red Sox at Progressive Field on June 2, 2014 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Justin Masterson #63 celebrates with second baseman Jason Kipnis #22 of the Cleveland Indians after the second inning against the Boston Red Sox at Progressive Field on June 2, 2014 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Boston Red Sox had a reunion last night as they met up with some former teammates and their former manager, Terry Francona last night in Cleveland. And it was old friend Justin Masterson, who the Red Sox traded to the Cleveland Indians for Victor Martinez, that did the Red Sox in.

Masterson struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings to help the Tribe to a 3-2 win over the visiting nine at Progressive Field.

While the Red Sox didn’t face Scott Atchison, Nick Hagadone (also part of V-Mart deal), George Kottaras, they did see David Murphy and Mike Aviles play in the game. Murphy had three hits in three at-bats off of John Lackey while Aviles was 0-for-3.

Lackey didn’t have his best stuff last night but did pitch a complete game and kept the Red Sox close the whole way. Xander Bogaerts got the Red Sox to within a run in the 8th with a two-run homer. Bogaerts finished with two hits on the night.

Brock Holt, Dustin Pedroia, and David Ortiz had the other three hits the visitors had on the night.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 6/2/14

John Lackey (L), Justin Masterson (R)

After sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend to extend their winning streak to seven games, the Boston Red Sox embark on a nine-game, 10 day road trip. Tonight, they’ll kick it off with the first game of a three-game set with the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Indians television market, you can catch the game on WKYC 3 and SportsTime Ohio. And if you can’t catch the game on television, you can always listen on the 2014 Red Sox Radio Network.

In his lone start against the Indians in 2013, he picked up the win after allowing an unearned run in seven innings of work. He’s made 17 career starts against the Tribe and is 7-7 with a 3.98 ERA. Six of those starts have come at Progressive Field where he is 3-3 with a 2.79 ERA.

Old friend Justin Masterson makes his 13th start of 2014 for another old friend Terry Francona. In his previous 12 starts, Masterson is 2-4 with a 5.21 ERA. Video: Red Sox Payback Rays With Sweep of Their Own

Last weekend we watched the Boston Red Sox be swept by the Tampa Bay Rays to make it 10 straight losses for our team. However during that game, the benches cleared. Since then, the Red Sox have been playing inspired baseball.

Brock Holt #26 of the Boston Red Sox hits a two-run double in the fourth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays during the game at Fenway Park on June 1, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts. Brock Holt went 4-for-4 with four doubles and two RBIs while Jon Lester struck out 12 over seven innings to help the Red Sox to a 4-0 win and a sweep of the Rays at Fenway Park. It’s also their seventh straight win.

Since Will Middlebrooks went down with a fractured finger, Holt has solidified the Red Sox leadoff position. And while unfortunate for Mike Carp, who has a fractured foot, Holt will remain in the lineup as the primary first baseman until Mike Napoli returns from his injuries.

Garin Cecchini was called up to provide an extra body on the bench on Sunday and got into the game after Dustin Pedroia was ejected from the game. Cecchini picked up his first big league hit, an RBI double in the 7th inning.

His PawSox roommate, Alex Hassan, also made his big league debut yesterday and had his first MLB hit.
