Video: Red Sox Walk-Off With Fourth Straight Win

Xander Bogaerts #2 of the Boston Red Sox is mobbed by his teammates including Brock Holt #26 after hitting the walk-off game-winning single in the 9th inning against the Atlanta Braves during the game at Fenway Park on May 29, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts.

You really have to wonder if the skirmish with the Tampa Bay Rays last Sunday woke the Boston Red Sox up. While they ended up losing that game, they’ve been playing some inspired baseball since then.

They completed their road trip with two wins in Atlanta against the Braves. Those same two team came back to Fenway Park and after last night’s walk-off win, the Red Sox find themselves with four straight wins.

The Red Sox trailed in this one 3-1 before rallying back in the 8th and 9th.

Xander Bogaerts and A.J. Pierzynski had RBI singles in the 8th. Bogaerts had the single in the 9th that caused the winning run to be scored.

Braves 3B Chris Johnson got a Bogaerts grounder had only one play which was at second. Problem was that rookie Tommy La Stella dropped the ball and it allowed Jackie Bradley, Jr. to score from second with the winning run.

Bogaerts has been on fire lately as he added another three hits on Thursday night. Brock Holt added threehits and an RBI from the top of the lineup. He’s going to make things interesting when Stephen Drew gets recalled because Holt has stabilized the leadoff spot for the Red Sox.

Pierzynski had two hits as well from the DH spot. He was a last minute addition to the lineup when David Ortiz was scratched from the lineup with a sore right calf. Big Papi did pinch-hit in the 8th but was intentionally walked.

Jake Peavy was solid for eight innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Koji Uehara picked up the win after working the top of the 9th.

Former UConn Huskies and current Houston Astros outfielder George Springer has exploded onto the scene in Houston, while impacting the Major Leagues with both his bat and his glove.

Oh by the way, he added his 10th home run of May on Thursday night.

UConn Women’s Basketball 2014-15 Conference Opponents Announced

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the women’s basketball scheduling model for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons and an 11-team conference championship bracket.

UConn HuskiesThe league’s 11 members will play an 18-game schedule. Each team will play eight of its 10 opponents twice, and the other two opponents once each – one at home and one away.

Each school will play the same home and home opponents over the course of two years in the current model. The single play opponents will switch sites in 2015-16.

The Huskies will play home-and-home series against Cincinnati, East Carolina, Memphis, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane, and Tulsa for 16 league games. UConn will travel to UCF and will play host to Houston to complete the conference schedule. Dates and times of the games will be announced at a later date.

The American Women’s Basketball Championship includes all 11 teams and will be seeded 1-11. The tournament will begin on Friday with matchups between the No. 9 and No. 8 seeds, No. 10 and No. 7 seeds and No. 11 and No. 6 seeds. The winners will advance to meet the first, second and third seeds, respectively, on Saturday.

Also playing on Saturday will be the No. 5 and No. 4 seeds. The top five seeds in the championship will receive byes into Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

The 2015 American Women’s Basketball Championship will be played March 6-9 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.  With the addition of East Carolina University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa in 2014, The American’s basketball membership will increase to 11. The conference enjoyed tremendous basketball success in 2013-14 with UConn’s NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, which was the second time that the two teams have won national titles in the same season.

The American was the only league to have a team advance to the final four of all the major postseason college tournaments with SMU playing in the men’s NIT championship game and USF and Rutgers, the eventual champion, in the women’s NIT.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 5/29/14

Mike Minor (L), Jake Peavy (R)

After winning three straight over the Atlanta Braves, the Boston Red Sox look to complete the sweep tonight in the finale of a four-game home-and-home set at Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. The game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Braves television market, you can catch the game on SportsSouth. If you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck the MLB Network will have coverage of the game (outside of Red Sox and Braves television markets). And if you can’t catch the game on television, you can always listen on the 2014 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jake Peavy steps on the bump for the 11th time in 2014. In his previous 10 starts, Peavy is 1-2 with a 4.65 ERA. He made one start against the Braves in 2013 as a member of the Chicago White Sox and picked up the win after allowing four runs (two earned) in six innings of work. He’s made eight career starts against the Braves and is 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA.

Mike Minor makes his sixth start of the 2014 season. In his previous five starts, he is 2-3 with a 3.90 ERA. His lone career start against the local nine came at the Fens in 2012 when he took the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) in 4.2 innings of work.

With the 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series Championship team in the house last night at the Fens for the 10-year anniversary, there were many great moments.
