Jasper Howard Memorial Statue Now A Reality

Jasper Howard

From UConn:

STORRS, Conn. – Fundraising for a memorial in honor of Jasper Howard, the University of Connecticut football student-athlete who tragically lost his life five years ago, has been successfully completed. The memorial will be officially dedicated on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at halftime of UConn’s Homecoming game vs. UCF at Rentschler Field.

Funds for the statue were raised in a grassroots fashion with the efforts spearheaded by UConn supporters Dan and Lisa Lowry of Prospect, Conn. The lead gift for the memorial came from former UConn head football coach Randy Edsall, who was Howard’s coach with the Huskies. Donations also came from former Husky student-athletes and fans from around the country.

“I want to thank everyone in the UConn family who made this memorial to the life of Jasper a reality,” said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. “I especially want to recognize our friends Dan and Lisa Lowry, who came up with the concept for the memorial and worked tirelessly to raise the funds that will make it possible. In addition, we are very grateful to Randy Edsall and his family for their generosity towards this project.”

“The support shown by the UConn community has been heartening,” says Joshua Newton, president and CEO of the University of Connecticut Foundation. “People often turn to philanthropy to remember and honor those we lose too early.”

Howard lost his life on October 18, 2009 – hours after UConn had defeated Louisville at Rentschler Field on Homecoming. Howard recorded a career-high 11 tackles in the contest and a fumble recovery.

“Jasper Howard represented everything that is good about college athletics,” said Edsall. “He loved being a student-athlete at UConn. His tragic death had a bonding reaction with the entire UConn community that none of us will ever forget for the rest of our lives.”

Funds will continued to be raised for the Jasper T. Howard Endowed Scholarship Fund at UConn, which is presented annually to a cornerback on the Husky football team who best embodies the qualities of Howard.

UConn RB #22 Arkeel Newsome looks up field after catching a screen pass on September 27, 2014 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. Newsome would take it 74 yards for a touchdown.

If you live in Connecticut, you know the name Arkeel Newsome and what he did in his high school career at Ansonia High School. If you don’t, I’ll acquaint you with the numbers.

The Parade All-American, the first ever to play for the UConn Huskies football team, finished with 10,685 yards rushing and 187 total touchdowns (172 rushing).

As a true freshman, he’s figured into Bob Diaco’s offense at running back and on special teams as the primary kick returner. You can see the talent he has as he’s been one or two blocks from breaking open a big kickoff return as well a run or two this season.

In the loss to Temple on Saturday afternoon, UConn Country finally got to see the abilities and speed of Newsome as he took a screen pass from Chandler Whitmer and took it 74 yards to house for his first collegiate touchdown.

The way I see it, that’s the first of many for Newsome over the next 3 1/2 years at UConn.

Watch below as Diaco and Whitmer talk about Newsome:

Could the UConn Huskies be returning to the days where they have a wildcat quarterback at the helm during certain situations? The answer to that is that it is quite possible they could.

If you stayed until the end of the game, judging by the crowd left you most likely didn’t, you saw or would have seen UConn WR Deshon Foxx under center for the final drive of the game.

While he did hand off to Ron Johnson some, Foxx used his speed to gain 30 yards on three plays with a long of 26. He also completed his only pass to Noel Thomas for four yards.

Personally, I liked what I saw of it.

Foxx looked comfortable back there (he did play some quarterback in high school). If you paired him up with Arkeel Newsome, that duo could possibly do some damage in a read option situation.

It’ll be interesting to see how much UConn head coach Bob Diaco goes to this over the final seven games of the season.

Watch below as Diaco talks about Foxx as well as Foxx’s reaction to being under center.

2014 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 6 (Sept. 28)

AP & Amway Coaches Polls

The NCAA football rankings are out for the week and the Florida State Seminoles are no longer the consensus No. 1 team in the country.

The Seminoles come in at No. 1 in the AP Poll while the Alabama Crimson Tide take the No. 1 spot in the Amway Coaches Poll.

The Noles are followed by the Oregon Ducks, Alabama, Oklahoma Sooners and Auburn Tigers in the AP Poll. The Crimson Tide are followed by Florida State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Auburn in the Coaches Poll.

The East Carolina Pirates, who were off this week, remain as the only American Athletic Conference team to be ranked as they come in at 22/21.

The Cincinnati Bearcats are the only team from the AAC among the others receiving votes in either poll as they got one vote in the Coaches Poll.
