Carl Crawford To Miss Three Months With UCL Sprain

The Boston Red Sox got some more bad news on Thursday night in regards to Carl Crawford.

Outfielder Carl Crawford #13 of the Boston Red Sox watches his team from the dugout against the Pittsburgh Pirates during a Grapefruit League Spring Training Game at JetBlue Park on March 9, 2012 in Fort Myers, Florida.Crawford, who is still rehabbing from wrist surgery in the offseason, will now miss the next three months with a UCL sprain in his left elbow.

Here’s the release from the Red Sox:

“Carl Crawford was examined by the Red Sox medical staff. He was diagnosed as having a left elbow ulnar collateral ligament sprain. A conservative treatment protocol was recommended. Carl was also examined by Dr. James Andrews who was in agreement with the assessment and plan. Carl received a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection and will be shut down from baseball activity during the initial phase of his treatment.”

With Jacoby Ellsbury out for at least another 4-6 weeks, this news is not good. Hopefully, they’ll be able to use the pieces they have in the outfield and not fall to far out.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 4/26

Felix Doubront (L), Philip Humber (R)

After sweeping the Minnesota Twins, the Boston Red Sox head to the south side of the Windy City tonight for the first of a four-game set with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the White Sox television market, you can catch the game on WGN. If you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as MLB Network will have coverage of the game outside of the Red Sox and White Sox television markets. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Felix Doubront looks to pick up his first win in his fourth start of the 2012 season. In his previous three starts, Doubront has no record with a 3.94 ERA (7 ER/16 IP). Tonight will mark his first ever appearance and start against the South Siders. He’s never faced any teams from the AL Central in his career either.

After making MLB history by becoming the 21st pitcher to throw a perfect game in his last start, Philip Humber looks to continue that in his third start of 2012. In his previous two starts, Humber is 1-0 with a 0.63 ERA (1 ER/14.1 IP). Both of his career starts came against the Red Sox in 2011. In those two starts, he was 1-1 with a 5.84 ERA (8 ER/12.1 IP). His lone loss came at U.S. Cellular Field where he allowed four runs in 4.2 innings of work.

Whale Try to Sustain Focus, Intensity

By Bob Crawford

The Connecticut Whale now “hurry up and wait”, as they enjoy the rewards of having won their first-round series against Bridgeport in three straight games, and in a span of only four days.

CT WhaleSince completing their sweep of the Sound Tigers on Sunday, the Whale have been joined by the Toronto Marlies, Oklahoma City Barons and Abbotsford Heat as AHL teams to have advanced out of the first round, but the Whale-Bridgeport series remains the only Eastern Conference matchup to have been concluded.

The Hershey Bears kept their season alive at home Wednesday night, defeating the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 4-3 in overtime, and avoiding a sweep.  In the other Eastern Conference series’, both of which were also in action Wednesday, top-seeded Norfolk downed Manchester, 5-2, in Manchester, and second-seed St. John’s also won, 5-1 at home over Syracuse.  All three of those battles resume Friday, so the Whale could know their next opponent before they go to bed Friday night.

If both Norfolk and St. John’s win again Friday, then the Whale will play the Admirals in the Conference Semifinals, regardless of who wins between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Hershey.  If either the Admirals or IceCaps lose, then word will have to wait until after Saturday’s action, as a series loss by either Norfolk or St. John’s would pit the Whale against the Penguins/Bears winner, and if both the top seeds were to blow their 2-1 leads and lose their series’, the Whale would play Syracuse in the next round.

No matter what happens, the Whale are most likely looking at close to a week more of game idleness before their next series starts.  Getting a break is certainly not a bad thing either, with plenty of bumps and bruises that could use some time to heal.

To continue reading, please click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

“Especially for an old guy like me, a couple of days off really helps, to get the body back where it needs to be,” Whale defenseman Brendan Bell said Thursday, after the Whale returned to practice after two days of rest.  “But we know that when we’re out there, we’ve got to go hard, to keep your legs going, to keep your wind, stuff that’s important come next week when we’ve got to go (play) again.  It’s kind of that fine line, of trying to get that rest but also trying to get your work in when you need it.

“It’s tough to do, especially when you get the intensity up and ramp it up come playoff time, and then you’ve got to cool off for seven or ten days or whatever it’s going to be.  It’s difficult to keep that intensity up in practice, but that’s important.  We try to do some team-building stuff, we had a golf outing last week, probably go for dinner once we find out who we’re playing here.  You try to keep things status quo and keep the intensity up and not let things get too lax.”

From a coaching perspective, the Whale staff is doing its best not to get caught up in thinking too much about who the next opponent will be, and simply focusing on keeping a positive frame of mind.

“I think the important thing right now is to focus on our team, try to stay in good shape and in good spirit as well,” Assistant Coach J.J. Daigneault said Thursday.  “Obviously we’ll know by Saturday who we’re playing and then we have enough time to sit down and scout and start adjusting.  We’ll have four days until the next series after Saturday, so there’s plenty of time to do our scouting then.

“We’ve been practicing for the past two days.  Tomorrow (Friday), we have a plan to scrimmage.  We have plenty of guys, we have some extra players who came out from college, some young kids that came out of Junior that the organization wanted us to have a look at.  So we have ten defensemen, probably six lines.  We’re going to have a full-ice scrimmage, to keep the players sharp.

“I think it’s important for the guys to stay sharp, push themselves and stay ready.  Saturday might be a day off for us.  We’re not sure yet, but we might just have the guys stay home and relax and enjoy themselves and their families, and then back to work on Sunday.”

As the man who calls the shots for the Whale’s defense crew, Daigneault is extremely proud of the effort in the opening-round series, which saw the Whale give up a total of only three goals in the three games, and put up shutouts in the first two.

“I broke down the first game (on tape),” he said, “I’m breaking down the second game right now, I’m three-quarters into it, and I kept preaching to the players on the ice to try to limit secondary chances.  We gave up some scoring chances from wide drives and some scoring chances from around the net, but very rarely did they get a secondary chance.  So the defensemen did a good job either taking the first shot away, or they did a good job of eliminating (opposing attackers and their sticks) in order not to give up a secondary chance.”

The blueliners themselves are also encouraged by how the first round played out.

“I think our defense is probably the backbone of our team,” Bell offered.  “We’ve got a lot of guys who are veterans back there, guys that have played a lot in this league, obviously a couple of guys like myself, Wade (Redden) and Nightie (Jared Nightingale), who are older than most.  I thought we did a really good job, we upped our game in the playoffs and we didn’t give them much.  Talbs (goaltender Cam Talbot) was a wall through the first two games, giving up 40 shots was too many, but when you’ve got him stopping everything, that goes a long way.  It’s nice to see when guys perform like that.”

The one player who probably would have most preferred to avoid a long layoff was Talbot, who carried a red-hot hand throughout the victory over Bridgeport, after a very strong finish to the regular season.  The second-year man stopped 127 of the 130 shots he faced in the first round, and now has a 0.97 goals-against average and a 96.9% save percentage in his last nine appearances, going back to the regular season.

“I think you have to stay focused, and just keep working hard in practice,” Talbot said, when asked how he was trying to keep his roll going.  “The biggest thing for a goalie, I think, is the mental preparation behind us, so you can’t really tail off during practice.  You’ve got to stay focused for the next nine or ten days, and just wait to find out who our opponent is and prepare for them.”

According to Daigneault, who enjoyed several long NHL playoff runs as a player, including a Stanley Cup championship with Montreal in 1993, if the Whale as a team can maintain that focus, the rewards could be tremendous.

“As a hockey player, for anybody that’s gone far in the playoffs, your game improves every series,” he said.  “The team improves, the structure, the system, everybody plays better, and individually you play better.  So if guys understand that, they’re willing to put in the work in practice during the week that we have right now, in the game they’re going to reach their full potential if we advance again.”

Three UConn Signees Headline All-USA Girls’ Basketball Team

Here’s the release from UConn announcing that the three incoming freshman for the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team have been named to the 2012 All-USA Girls’ Basketball Team.

McLEAN, Va. (April 26, 2012) – Incoming University of Connecticut women’s basketball freshmen Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson have been named to the 2012 All-USA Girls’ Basketball Team, revealed by USA Today and HighSchoolSports.net Thursday morning.

UConn Huskies women's basketball logoAll three future Huskies earned a spot on the All-USA first team.  Stewart, a 6’3 center out of Cicero-North Syracuse, averaged 24.2 points as a senior, led her team to a second straight state championship and was also named the Player of the Year.

Tuck, a 6’2 forward out of Bolingbrook, and Jefferson, a 5’7 guard from Glenn Height, Texas, join Stewart on the first team.  Tuck averaged 29 points and better than 10 rebounds per game, while Jefferson led the Texas Home Educators’ Sports Association team to a 41-6 record and a championship season by contributing more than 17 points and five steals per contest.

Rounding out the All-USA first team are Alexis Jones of MacArthur (Irving, TX), a Duke-bound guard who averaged 25.2 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game this season, and Tennessee signee forward Bashaara Graves of Clarksville (TN), who averaged more than 21 points and 11 rebounds per game while leading Clarksville to a 37-1 record and the state AAA semifinals.

For more information on the All-USA team, visit www.highschoolsports.net. Following is the complete listing of this year’s All-USA First Team, as determined by USA TODAY and HighSchoolSports.net.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/26

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, right, gives a tap to pitcher Clay Buchholz, left, as Buchholz left the baseball game in the sixth inning after loading the bases with a walk to the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, in Minneapolis.

While most of New England’s eyes were watching the Boston Bruins eventually fall to the Washington Capitals in overtime last night, the Boston Red Sox were trying to complete a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins on the road. And as you might have expected, they definitely made it interesting to say the least.

Clay Buchholz was staked to a 7-1 lead entering the 6th inning but by the end of the inning, Red Sox Nation was once again questioning the bullpen along with Buchholz.

After Buchholz struck out former Little League World Series hero Sean Burroughs, three straight hits by the Twins brought in a run. Then Buchholz would walk the bases loaded and exit the game for Scott Atchison. Unfortunately for Atchison, the hit by Joe Mauer went off of his leg into center and allowed two more runs to score.

Justin Thomas came in for Atchison and promptly gave up a double to Justin Morneau which plated another run cutting the Red Sox lead to 7-5. Thomas then nailed Chris Parmelee in the head with a fastball. Visibily shaken, Bobby Valentine removed Thomas from the game and brought in Matt Albers who gave up a run-scoring single to Trevor Plouffe. But then Albers escaped any further damage as he induced a double play ball by Burroughs to end the inning.

From there, Vicente Padilla and Franklin Morales set down the next six batters providing a little order to things. But then Alfredo Aceves decided that watching the Bruins lose in overtime wasn’t exciting enough for fans of both of the Bruins and the Red Sox.

He got the leadoff batter Danny Valencia, who replaced Parmelee, to ground out. He walked Plouffe, then allowed a single to pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit. Then he got Ben Revere to ground out to first base on a questionable fair ball. Upon looking at multiple replays, the ball appeared to be foul. One could say that finally a break went for the Red Sox.

So with two outs, Aceves decides that he’s going to hit Alexi Casilla in the thigh with a fastball. No biggie, bases loaded, two outs, up one run. Aceves redeemed himself though and brought relief to a rabid fanbase by striking out Denard Span.

Buchholz still is struggling as evidenced by throwing 107 pitches in just 5 1/3 innings. He needs to figure out things quickly because as good as the Red Sox offense might be, there’s no way they can produce anywhere from 5-10 runs a night to support their starters. He basically abandoned his changeup last night but his curveball was better than it had been. Still though, his command is lacking a consistent feel to it and until he straightens that out, it could turn into a long season for the young righty.

It’s obvious the bullpen is struggling right now. There is help on the way though.

After throwing two nights in a row with great results, Rich Hill is more than likely ready to contribute to the Red Sox. It won’t be tonight though since he has thrown in two straight games. My best guess is that the move happens tomorrow since Thomas probably won’t be available to pitch anyways.

Something also tells me that Daniel Bard‘s final start of the season will come tomorrow night. Of course that might depend on how he pitches and how Felix Doubront does tonight. With Aaron Cook‘s opt-out date looming large, one of those two is likely headed to the bullpen. Obviously, the one who makes the most sense is Bard.

Offensively, Dustin Pedroia had a nice little night with three hits. Mike Aviles may have gone 1-for-4 but his one hit was a big one, a three-run blast. Adrian Gonzalez knocked in a run with a single while Jarrod Saltalamacchia increased his hitting streak to four games with a two-run single.

Before leaving the game with a sore knee, Cody Ross had a run scoring hit as well.

So with the Red Sox offense coming around, it’s time for the pitching, both starting and the bullpen, to do their job. Even with winning those three games, if everything clicks starting tonight, it could go a long ways towards starting a nice long winning streak and getting things back on track.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
