UConn Depth Chart for Buffalo

Buffalo Bulls @ UConn Huskies

UConn Huskies football coach Paul Pasqualoni has released his depth chart for Saturday’s home game against the Buffalo Bulls. And like last week’s depth chart, the changes are on the defensive side of things.

Shamar Stephen has taken over at defensive tackle for Julian Campenni who now backs him up. Angelo Pruitt moves from backing up Campenni last week to starting at defensive end in place of Tim Willman who now backs up Trevardo Williams.

Kenton Adeyemi, who was the backup to Williams last week, is no longer on the two deep.

HARTFORD, September 24, 2012:  Connecticut Whale general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the team has signed forward Danny Hobbs to an American Hockey League contract.

CT WhaleHobbs, 23, a 6-1, 196-pound native of Shawville, Quebec, played the last four seasons in Hockey East for the U. Hobbs’ four-year career totals at U. Red Sox News & Notes – 9/24

Boston Red Sox's Cody Ross hits an RBI double off a pitch by Baltimore Orioles' Luis Ayala allowing Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia to score in the eighth inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park, in Boston, Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012.

Four starts ago, the talk around the Boston Red Sox was that Felix Doubront could be shut down for the rest of the season. After all, he’d never thrown this many innings or pitches in a season.

Doubront fought for himself and told them he’d be fine. They should be glad he did.

Yesterday afternoon in his final Fenway Park of the season, Doubront put together a gem as the Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1.

Even with the loss, the Orioles remain one game behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. The Orioles also remain one game ahead of the Oakland A’s for the top AL Wild Card spot.

It took until the 5th inning for Doubront to give up his first hit. It would also be the only inning he allowed a run.

Lew Ford started it with a single, Chris Davis followed with a double and then Ford came in to score on a Manny Machado single. After that though, Doubront struck out the next two batters while recording the final out on a groundout.

Including those last three outs of the 5th, Doubront set down nine of the final 10 batters he faced.

A strong finish for Doubront is what he needs and the Red Sox need. If he can show them and himself that he can finish a long season, he could prove to be a part of the plans for 2013 in the rotation. Right now it looks as though three spots are guaranteed in Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and John Lackey. And with out a high class free agent market out there, Doubront could fit in there as well.

The Red Sox got the winning run in the 8th on back-to-back doubles by Dustin Pedroia and Cody Ross.

There was some drama in the 9th as Mark Reynolds hit a one out single followed by a Jim Thome ground rule double off of Andrew Bailey. After an intentional walk to Davis, Machado grounded into a fielder’s choice that saw Reynolds out at the plate. Bailey then ended the game by striking out pinch-hitter Ryan Flaherty.

Yes, we are playing out the string here. But the Red Sox can still affect the playoff races as they have two games against the Rays and then three on the road in Baltimore and New York. And with those final two teams battling for the top spot along with the Rays for a wild card spot, I wouldn’t expect the local nine to lay down.

The Red Sox are off today so we’ll be back shortly with the pitching matchups for the final homestand of the season. But for now, enjoy the overnight links from the media.

SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings »

Notes: After getting some flack last week about not including Rutgers in my ballot, they are in this week after an impressive win in Arkansas. Sure the Razorbacks are 1-3 but for the Scarlet Knights to go there and win is huge either way.

I’ve also been impressed with Oregon State who has pulled off upsets in its first two games.

I probably should have moved Notre Dame up in the rankings more but I simply can’t and it’s because I’m biased. There’s two things I hate in this world. It’s Notre Dame (all sports) and Duke basketball.

2012 NCAA Football Rankings – Week 5 (Sept. 23)

AP & USA Today Coaches Polls

The NCAA football rankings are out and the Alabama Crimson Tide remain the No. 1 team in the land after a rather convincing win over my brother’s alma mater Florida Atlantic.

The Oregon Ducks leapfrogged the LSU Tigers to be No. 2 with LSU going to No. 3 in both polls and are followed by the Florida State Seminoles and Georgia Bulldogs.

For the first time in what seems like years, the Big East has two teams ranked in the top 25 of both polls. The Louisville Cardinals are No. 19/17 while the Rutgers Scarlet Knights are No. 23/25.

The Cincinnati Bearcats are the only team from the Big East among the others receiving votes in both polls.
