Sunday Red Sox Travesty – 9/23

Chris Tillman (L), Felix Doubront (R)

After falling in extra innings yesterday, the Boston Red Sox look to avoid being swept this afternoon in the finale of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Felix Doubront steps to the hill for the 28th time in 2012. In his previous 27 starts, Doubront is 11-9 with a 5.08 ERA. He took the loss in his only start against the O’s this season after allowing two runs in six innings of work back on May 22nd. Doubront has made four career appearances (one start) against the Orioles and is 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA (4 ER/9 IP). Two of those appearances have come at the Fens where he hasn’t allowed a run in two innings of work.

Chris Tillman looks to keep the Orioles rolling in his 13th start of 2012. In his previous 12 starts, Tillman is 8-2 with a 3.22 ERA. He picked up a no decision in his only start of the season against the Red Sox after allowing three runs in 4.2 innings back on August 16th. Tillman has made three career starts against the Red Sox and is 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA.

Western Michigan Tops UConn, Again

Western Michigan's Travonte Boles (55) gets one of six sacks on UConn's Chandler Whitmer in their game at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo Saturday. WMU won, 30-24.

For the second straight year, the UConn Huskies football team had no answers for Alex Carder and the Western Michigan Broncos passing attack. But in the end, it was a huge turnover that cost the Huskies a chance for a win.

Desmond Bozeman’s 53 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown turned out to be the difference as the Broncos beat the Huskies 30-24 in front of 10,328 at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, MI on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Huskies fall to 2-2 while the Broncos improve to 2-2. It’s the second straight year, Western Michigan has beaten UConn.

The problem all season long for the Huskies has been the offense and the inability of the offensive line to block. The strong part had been the defense.

On Saturday, it was inability of the offensive line to block in the first half and the fact that Carder was carving up the UConn defense.

I have said in the past that the UConn defense wasn’t going to be able to carry this team all year and that was the case.

Last year Carder torched the Huskies for five touchdowns with quick drops and quick passes. He did more of the same before leaving with a hand injury late in the third quarter.

We’ve seen the UConn defense get alot of pressure on the opposing quarterbacks but with Carder’s quick drops they were unable to do that. With the quick slants and other short passes, Carder was able to move the ball down the field.

It was nice to see the offense make some significant improvements. With the wildcat being ineffective, the Huskies, once adjustments were made, were able to move the ball down the field.

We finally saw Chandler Whitmer throw his first touchdown pass of the season, three in all. But it was the six sacks allowed by the offensive line that’s concerning right now.

Even though Lyle McCombs did rush for over 100 yards and Whitmer threw for over 300, the missed blocks in the first half hurt. McCombs was probably a block or two a way from breaking things open in the first half. But since they didn’t and Carder was able to move the ball down the field, the Huskies found themselves in a hole they couldn’t climb out of.

It’s just another frustrating loss for the Huskies. If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

Hopefully they can figure things out and get things going. Big East play is just around the corner.

Saturday Red Sox Travesty – 9/22

Adam Jones #10 of the Baltimore Orioles reacts after scoring his second run of the game in the sixth inning against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on September 21, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts.

I think we all thought that when the Baltimore Orioles got off to their hot start to the 2012 MLB season, we all thought they’d fade away. Of course, we are the same people who thought the Boston Red Sox would turn their season around.

Well folks, the Orioles haven’t gone away and we all know what’s happened with the Red Sox.

Behind three RBIs from Matt Wieters, the O’s were able to beat the local nine 4-2 to keep pace in the AL East race. Last night also marked the first time that Jon Lester had ever lost a start to them. He was 14-0 in 20 career starts before that.

With the New York Yankees walking off with the win in 10 innings, the Orioles stay one game behind in the AL East. The Orioles are one game ahead of the Oakland A’s, who were the victims of the Yankees’ walkoff, in the AL Wild Card standings. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are 3.5 games out of the second wild card spot.

Honestly, I didn’t think Lester pitched all that badly. He certainly looked a lot better than he had earlier in the season. But with the Orioles much improved offensively, they took advantage of Lester when he did make mistakes.

He left a few pitches up in the zone in the 4th inning after his team had given him a 1-0 lead in the 3rd and that resulted in two runs for the visiting nine. And after the offense tied it back up in the 5th, he gave it back in the 6th.

After Lester had gotten J.J. Hardy to ground out to start the inning, he walked Adam Jones, who then scored on a Wieters double. A wild pitch from Lester moved Wieters up 90 feet and then he came around to score on a Mark Reynolds single to finish off the scoring for the evening.

Offensively, the Summer of Pedro Ciriaco came to a close (it’s fall today) with two more hits. Scott Podsednik added two hits as did Daniel Nava.

There was a scary moment in the 9th when Mark Melancon hit Robert Andino in the head with a pitch. Andino did take exception with it as he’s been a thorn in the Red Sox side, especially since the last game of 2011. I can tell you that I personally don’t think it was done on purpose. We’ve all seen how wild Melancon has been this season at times. Plus he wasn’t even with the Red Sox when all that went down last year.

Randy Wolf (L), Aaron Cook (R)

After falling last night, the Boston Red Sox look to try and play spoiler this afternoon in the second game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Aaron Cook makes his 17th start of a disappointing 2012 season. In his previous 16 starts, Cook is 4-10 with a 4.93 ERA. Both of his career starts against the Orioles have come this season in which he is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA (8 ER/8 IP). He allowed six runs in 2.2 innings of work in his lone Fenway start against them.

Randy Wolf makes his 25th start (30th appearance) but just his second start (fifth appearance) in an Orioles uniform. In 29 combined appearances (24 starts), Wolf is 5-10 with a 5.66 ERA. In four appearances (one start) with the O’s, Wolf is 2-0 with a 5.22 ERA. He’s made six career starts against the Red Sox and is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA. Four of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA.

Here are today’s lineups:

Baltimore Orioles85-64 Boston Red Sox68-83

Workman combined to go 10-8 with a 3.50 ERA (54 ER/138.2 IP) and 130 strikeouts in 25 starts between High-A Salem and Double A-Portland.   The 24-year-old ranked among organizational minor league leaders in strikeouts (T-2nd) and wins (4th), and among Carolina League leaders in ERA (4th, 3.40), WHIP (2nd, 1.09) and opponent batting average (2nd, .244).  He was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for April 23-29 after tossing a 6.0-inning, three-hit shutout in a start on April 27.  Workman was selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

The 19-year-old Bogaerts hit .307 (146-for-476) with 37 doubles, three triples, 20 home runs, 81 RBI and 44 walks in 127 games with High-A Salem and Double-A Portland, including a .326 average (30-for-92) in 23 games for the Sea Dogs.  He was named Carolina League Player of the Week for July 30-August 5 and was selected as a Carolina League Mid-Season All-Star.  He also represented the Red Sox organization at the 2012 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, playing for the World team.  After an August 9 promotion to Double-A, Bogaerts hit safely in 19 of 23 games with Portland, including 10 multi-hit contests.  Named to Baseball America’s 2012 Minor League All-Star Second-Team, he ranked among organizational minor league leaders in home runs (T-2nd), RBI (3rd) and batting (T-4th).  Bogaerts signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent in August of 2009.

Bradley committed just seven errors in 260 chances for a .973 fielding percentage in 115 games between right field (1 game) and center field (114 games) with High-A Salem and Double-A Portland.  He batted .315 (146-for-463) with 42 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, 87 walks and 63 RBI in 128 games with Salem and Portland.  The 22-year-old hit .359 (84-for-234) with 26 doubles, 34 RBI and 52 walks for Salem before making his Double-A debut on June 21.  Bradley was named Topps Player of the Month in the Carolina League for May, batting .382 (34-for-89) with 21 walks to lead all CL hitters.  He ranked second in Boston’s minor league system in batting average, was selected as a Carolina League Mid-Season All-Star and named to Baseball America’s 2012 Minor League All-Star Second Team.  Bradley was selected as the fourth pick by the Red Sox (sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds, 40th overall) in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

The 21-year-old Cecchini led the Red Sox organization with 51 stolen bases for Single-A Greenville, third-most in the South Atlantic League, and was caught stealing just six times for an 89.4 percent success rate.  He led qualifying South Atlantic League third basemen with a .944 fielding percentage, committing 14 errors in 251 chances.  Named a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star, he ranked among league leaders in doubles (T-3rd, 38) and runs scored (T-4th, 84).  Cecchini was selected as the sixth pick by the Red Sox (4th round, 143rd overall) in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

Heras was 6-1 with a 2.03 ERA (14 ER/62.0 IP) in 13 starts for the Dominican Summer League Red Sox.  Named a DSL All-Star, the 18-year-old held opponents to one earned run or less in nine of his 13 starts.  He led the team in wins (tied) and innings pitched.

Margot hit .285 (74-for-260) with 10 doubles, 45 RBI, 36 walks and 33 stolen bases in 68 games for the DSL Red Sox.  The 17-year-old ranked third among DSL leaders with 33 stolen bases and was selected as a Dominican Summer League All-Star.  He paced the club in hits, RBI, stolen bases, runs (49) and total bases (110).

Nava had served as equipment manager for his college baseball team at Santa Clara University before transferring to the College of San Mateo where he hit over .400 in two seasons.  He returned to Santa Clara for his senior year and led the West Coast Conference in hitting (.395) and on-base percentage (.495) in 2006 but went undrafted out of college.  He was cut from the Chico Outlaws in the independent Golden League before being called back and named top Independent League prospect by Baseball America in 2007.  Nava signed with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in January of 2008.  Making his Major League debut at 27-years-old on June 12, 2010, Nava hit a grand slam in his first pitch seen, becoming the second Major Leaguer ever to do so.  After appearing in 60 Big League games in 2010, he spent the 2011 season with Triple-A Pawtucket and was outrighted from Boston’s 40-man roster during that season.  Nava attended minor league Spring Training this year and started the season with Pawtucket before being selected to the Major League roster on May 10.  Despite two trips to the disabled list due to a left wrist sprain, Nava has appeared in 78 games with Boston this year, the second-most among Red Sox outfielders in 2012.

Friday Red Sox Travesty – 9/21

Miguel Gonzalez (L), Jon Lester (R)

After splitting their four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox return home to host their final homestand of the 2012 season. Tonight, they’ll kick off the five-game homestand with the first game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Jon Lester makes his team-leading 31st start and what should be his final Fenway Park start of 2012 tonight. In his previous 30 starts, Lester is 9-12 with a 4.95 ERA. He’s made two starts against the O’s this season and has no record with a 3.75 ERA (5 ER/12 IP). Lester has not lost to the Orioles in 20 career starts as he is 14-0 with a 2.49 ERA. Half of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 7-0 with a 2.47 ERA.

Rookie Miguel Gonzalez makes his 13th start (16th appearance) for the still very relevant Orioles. In his previous 15 appearances (12 starts), Gonzalez is 6-4 with a 3.57 ERA. Both of his two career appearances (one start) against his former organzation have come this season where he is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA (3 ER/10 IP). His one lone Fenway appearance came back on June 7th when he allowed one run in four innings of work.

Newbury Relieved to be Getting Back at it with Whale

By Bob Crawford

It has been an anxiety-ridden last month or so for the hockey world, with the entire sport’s attention focused on the NHL labor situation.  And beyond the headlines of the principals, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHL Players Association chief Donald Fehr, exchanging proposals and looking for an upper hand in the negotiations, and reports of high-profile stars heading across the Atlantic to ride out the lockout with European clubs, players on the proverbial “bubble” between the NHL and AHL, like the Connecticut Whale’s Kris Newbury, were waiting and wondering what their situations would be.

CT WhaleDuring the last NHL lockout, in 2004-05, basically any player on a two-way (NHL/AHL) contract was allowed to play in the AHL.  Word was going around recently, though, that this time around would be different, that any player, like Newbury, who was eligible for waivers would be barred from coming to the AHL and would be locked out like all of the NHLers on one-way deals.  This would have been a severe blow to veteran depth players, who admittedly make good money even on their minor-league salaries, but have not had nearly the seven-figure earning power that much of the NHLPA membership enjoys.

Happily for the Newburys of the world, however, the NHL and the Players Association agreed that it would not be fair to deny veterans like Newbury a chance to play in the AHL during a lockout.  A special waiver period was held last week, during which teams could waive players on two-way deals, enabling them to be assigned to the AHL if they cleared.  Newbury did clear waivers, along with once and future Whale teammates Chad Kolarik, Mike Vernace, Tommy Grant, Brandon Segal, Micheal Haley, Sean Collins and Logan Pyett.

This, obviously, was a big relief to last year’s Whale co-leading scorer.

“I really wasn’t sure what was going to happen,” Newbury said Friday.  “I heard the waiver thing first, then I heard we might not be able to play.  So I kind of got worried there, I have to support a family.  I was kind of just letting my brain do a little thinking about what would happen if I didn’t play.  So I’m excited that we get the chance to play again and looking forward to it.”

While the lockout situation inarguably has a negative effect on the sport as a whole, it may present an opportunity for players like Newbury.  Having played regularly in the AHL, they will already be well into game shape whenever the lockout happens to come to an end.

To continue reading, please click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

“You’ve got to look at it as maybe it’s an opportunity for the management to see you more down here (the AHL) playing,” Newbury said.  “So you’ve got to bring your ‘A’ game every night and show them what you can do and hopefully open their eyes and get a chance when the lockout does eventually end.

“You’ve just got to give yourself the opportunity, if there is room up there and there’s a spot, you’ve got to be willing to do whatever it takes to grab that, and it starts here in a week (with the beginning of Whale training camp).  You’ve got to bring your best work ethic every day and show the management that you’re willing to do whatever it takes.”

Another by-product of the lockout is that NHL training camps, which were to have begun Friday, have been postponed.  That has caused the Whale’s New York Ranger parent club to move Whale camp from Hartford to the Rangers’ MSG Training Center facility in Tarrytown, NY.  Barring a miraculous settlement of the lockout, Newbury and the rest of the Whale training camp roster report Friday night for the start of camp, another opportunity to display their wares to the full attention of the entire organization.

“It’s (the camp) right in their (the Rangers’) back yard,” Newbury said, “so they’re going to be there every day with their eyes open, watching how hard you work and what kind of skills you do have.  So I’m looking forward to it, it’s a great facility down there, and it’s time for guys to get away and enjoy themselves and get to know each other a little better.”

The Rangers’ depth chart underwent some changes this summer, with the most significant being the three-players-for-one deal in late July that brought Rick Nash to Gotham.  There could very well be at least one forward spot up for grabs when the NHL season begins, and Newbury hopes, again, that being game-sharpened in the AHL will give players like him a better shot at that kind of opportunity.

“Anything can happen,” Newbury said, “and a week from now guys can show up and play above their heads of what the management thinks they were capable of, and they might get a shot.  So you’ve just got to be willing to work extremely hard and show what you’ve got.”

While getting prepared for the start of training camp, Newbury, who lives with his family in West Hartford, has been training with Pyett, with whom he played in 2009-10 with the Grand Rapids Griffins.  Pyett, a fifth-year pro defenseman, is changing teams for his first time as a pro, having signed with the Rangers this summer after four seasons in the Detroit Red Wings organization.

As for what Whale fans can expect out of Pyett, Newbury offered, “He’s an offensive-minded defenseman, likes to join the play.  So any time you see him get the puck in our defensive zone and he has control of it, he’s usually looking to get going with it.  So he brings a lot of excitement to the game, and hopefully he’ll help us out a lot.”

The Whale lost a strong puck-moving defenseman too, when Tim Erixon was sent to Columbus in the Nash trade, so there may be a ready-made role in Connecticut for Pyett.

“I think that’s in the back of his mind,” Newbury said.  “He wants to show the coaching staff what he can do offensively and get that opportunity to play on the power play.

“It’ll be exciting here in a week from now, to see all the guys showing management what they have.  There’s a lot of new faces, so for the management it’s time to evaluate, and see what everyone can bring to the table.”

Newbury, for his part, was also an unrestricted free agent this summer, and whispers were that he might be headed over to Europe after nine years of back-and-forth between the NHL and AHL.  The Rangers organization, though, showed how much it thinks of the gritty centerman when it stepped up with a two-year contract offer that included an excellent AHL salary of $300,000.  Newbury gladly accepted, and now is back for a third full year under the Ranger banner, with Hartford an excellent fit for him, his wife Amanda and their three children, Jacob, Jaidyn and Jorja.

“New York’s pretty close to Hartford, so the drive down there, if you do get the call, is not bad,” Newbury said.  “And the family’s really happy here, the organization is really great, treated us A-1 since I’ve been here.  So this is very nice for us to be here, and we’re very happy.”
