2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Rankings – Week 5 (Dec. 3)

AP & USA Today Coaches Polls

The NCAA men's basketball rankings are out and the UConn Huskies are still sitting on the outside. They are among the others receiving votes in both polls.

The Indiana Hoosiers remain as the No. 1 team in the land and are followed by the Duke Blue Devils, Michigan Wolverines, Syracuse Orange and Louisville Cardinals in the AP Poll. In the USA Today Coaches' Poll, the top four is the same with the Florida Gators in the fifth spot.

Joining the Orange and Cardinals (5/6) in the top 25 from the Big East are the Cincinnati Bearcats (11/12), Georgetown Hoyas (15/23) and Notre Dame Fighting Irish (22/25).

Joining UConn in the others receiving votes in both polls from the Big East are the Pitt Panthers. The Marquette Golden Eagles are amongst the others receiving votes in the AP Poll.

Report: Red Sox Sign Mike Napoli To a Three-Year Deal

If you're Ryan Lavarnway or Jarrod Saltalamacchia, you have to think that you probably won't be playing for the Boston Red Sox in 2013.

The offseason for the Red Sox got a little stranger on Monday when reports have surfaced that the team and free agent catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli have agreed to terms on a three-year deal. Reportedly, the deal is worth $39 million over three seasons.

The signing will give the Red Sox four MLB ready catchers in Lavarnway, Napoli, Saltalamacchia and the recently signed David Ross.

Lavarnway still has an option and could be sent back to Pawtucket to start the season. But with Napoli likely to play first base most of the time, it's possible Lavarnway could make the team.

It's all going to depend on whether or not the Red Sox move him or Saltalamacchia.

Given their contract situations, I think the Red Sox will probably move Salty since he's a free agent after this season while the Red Sox can still control Lavarnway until 2019.

Napoli has been a Red Sox killer in his career. Against Red Sox pitching, he's hitting .288 with 15 home runs and 33 RBIs in 38 games.. In 19 games at  Fenway Park, Napoli is hitting .306 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs.

Winter Meetings have just started in Nashville,TN so we can definitely expect things to heat up. With all of the GM's there, I'd highly expect the trade rumors for Lavarnway and/or Salty to heat up over the next few days.

Final 2012 BCS Standings

The final 2012 BCS standings are out and to nobody's surprise, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are the No. 1 team. They'll face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS Championship Game on January 7, 2013 in Miami, FL.

BCSBut that's not the big story.

All the Northern Illinois Huskies had to do gain a spot in a BCS bowl was to finish in the top 16 and finish ahead of a conference champion from an automatically qualifying school.

Well they did just that as they finished No. 15 in the final BCS Poll and were ahead of Louisville (21) and Wisconsin (NR), both of whom won their respective conference titles.

Springfield Falcons 5, Connecticut Whale 0

Hartford, CT, December 2, 2012 – A winless weekend for the Connecticut Whale finished Sunday with a 5-0 loss to the Springfield Falcons at the XL Center, as the Falcons handed the New York Rangers’ affiliate their third loss in three nights.

CT WhaleThe rival Falcons, still at the top of the Northeast Division, picked up win number 12 with the victory. Connecticut fell to 9-9-2-0

Springfield backstop Curtis McElhinney stopped 34 shots in his fifth shutout of the year. He leads the league in that category and remains top five in the AHL in goals against average. Jason Missiaen saved 23 of 28 in his sixth appearance.

Springfield drew first blood, after shutting down a 2-on-1 opportunity, when Cam Atkinson pulled a wrister that was initially stopped by Jason Missiaen, but Atkinson converted on the rebound. The goal was Atkinson’s eighth of the year, assisted by Jonathan Audy-Marchessault.  Just two and a half minutes in, Springfield had a 5-0 shot advantage.

Connecticut would turn the offense around, at least for the time being, when Patrick Cullity was called for cross-checking. Connecticut produced eight shots during the man-advantage.

Matt Gilroy was sent off for hooking behind Missiaen’s net with 9:06 to play. Audy-Marchessault connected with Ryan Johansen on a brilliant goal-line give-and-go to take a 2-0 edge. With the score, Johansen picked up his seventh goal.

Despite outshooting Springfield 13-7 in the first period, the Whale would take a 3-0 deficit in to the first break. John Moore’s slapper from the left point found Matt Calvert in front, and the Manitoba product redirected the puck beautifully with just under four minutes to play.

McElhinney came up with big time saves on Mike Vernace and Tommy Grant before the first expired.

Grant came as close as to scoring as anyone in a white jersey would when he clanged one off the crossbar, but two minutes later Sean Collins put Springfield up 4-0 just before the midway mark of regulation. The play raised some eyebrows as the puck nearly escaped the zone seconds prior to the well-placed wrister.

Micheal Haley looked to put some life in to the Connecticut bench by scrapping with Dalton Smith, but he was also called for roughing and Springfield had yet another power play chance.

Things got chippy late in the second, and the two squads amassed 24 penalty minutes during the period.

In a relatively uneventful third period, Haley squared up with Tomas Kubalik with 10:17 to play, and captain Ryan Craig netted his 12th of the season to close out scoring.

The final regular season NCAA college football rankings are out and the Notre Dame Irish will finish the season as the No. 1 team. They'll likely face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS Championship when the pairings are announced on Sunday night.

The Irish are followed by Alabama, The Ohio State Buckeyes, Florida Gators and Oregon Ducks in the AP Poll. The Irish and Crimson Tide are followed by the Oregon Ducks, Florida and Georgia Bulldogs in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.

The only team that is ranked in the top 25 are the Louisville Cardinals who come in at No. 22 in the AP Poll and No. 18 in the Coaches' Poll.

The Cincinnati Bearcats and Rutgers Scarlet Knights are the only teams from the Big East amongst the others receiving votes.
