Patriot’s Day Delight – 4/21

Wei-Yin Chen (L), Clay Buchholz (R)

After winning a wild and crazy game on Sunday night, the Boston Red Sox look to make it three wins in a row today in the finale of a four-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. The game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles market, you can catch the game on MASN.  If you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game as well. And if you can’t catch the game on television, you can always listen on the 2014 Red Sox Radio Network.

Clay Buchholz takes the ball for the fourth time this season and second at home. In his previous three starts, Buchholz is 0-1 with a 5.51 ERA (10 ER/16.1 IP). He was 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two starts against the O’s in 2013. In 16 career appearances (15 starts), he is 9-3 with a 3.40 ERA against the Birds. Seven of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 4-1 with a 1.74 ERA.

Wei-Yin Chen steps to the bump for the fourth time in 2014. In his previous three starts, Chen is 2-1 with a 4.76 ERA. His only loss of the season came against the Red Sox on April 3 when he allowed four runs in 5.1 innings of work. He’s made eight career starts against them and is 2-3 with a 5.24 ERA. Five of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 1-2 with a 5.86 ERA.

Video: Throwing Error Gives Red Sox 6-5 Walk-Off Win Over O’s

Dustin Pedroia #15 of the Boston Red Sox scores on an errant throw to home against the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning to win the game 6-5 at Fenway Park on April 20, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Sunday night’s game between the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles had just about everything and anything happen. Replay, idiot fans, bad pitching, good pitching, bad defense, good defense, you name it, it happened.

So it shouldn’t surprise you that the Red Sox scored the winning run on a David Lough throwing error that completed a come-from-behind 6-5 win at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox had the bases loaded in the 9th with one out when pinch-hitter Mike Carp lined out to Lough. Dustin Pedroia had started home then went back and tagged up. He then ran a little bit before heading back. But when Lough’s throw was off target, Pedey scampered home for the winning run.

It was Jonny Gomes who got the Red Sox back into the game after Ubaldo Jimenez had dominated them for the first five innings. His three run homer in the 6th inning cut the Orioles lead to 5-3. The local nine would add two more in the 7th before the crazy 9th inning.

David Ortiz had two hits and an RBI while Pedroia and Gomes both had two hits as well.

Jake Peavy started this one for the home team and was roughed up for five runs on 10 hits and four walks in 5.2 innings. The bullpen was solid over the final 3.1 innings allowing just two hits. Edward Mujica picked up the win after striking out the only batter he faced in the top half of the 9th.

Video: Holt Triples Red Sox To 4-2 Win Over Orioles

Brock Holt #26 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after he scored on a suicide squeeze against the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh inning at Fenway Park on April 19, 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Brock Holt was on fire at Triple-A Pawtucket. With Ryan Roberts struggling in place of the injured Will Middlebrooks, the Boston Red Sox brass thought they could spark the team by bringing up Holt.

They were right.

Holt’s RBI triple in the 7th scored Mike Carp to give the Red Sox the lead for good in a 4-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Jonathan Herrera provided an insurance run with his second safety squeeze of the week. Mike Napoli had an RBI and David Ortiz had the other run on a solo home run around Pesky’s Pole.  Both Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia led the home team with two hits each.

After a rough 1st inning, Felix Doubront settled down and pitched perhaps his finest game of the young season. He went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Junichi Tazawa needed just 11 pitches to record four outs and after a lead-off walk, Koji Uehara struck out the side for his fourth save of the season.
