Brady Wins AFC Offensive Player of the Month

The New England Patriots announced that two-time NFL MVP Tom Brady was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for December/January.

During the month(s), Brady led the Patriots to a 5-0 record which was their seventh perfect December since 2000.

In the five wins, Brady was 124 for 190 for 1608 yards. He threw 11 TD passes and only 2 INTs.

For the season he became the third player to throw for more than 5,000 yards. He also threw 39 TD passes and only 12 INTs as New England finished 13-3 and secured home field advantage through the playoffs.

In the Red Zone

Editors Note: Sorry for the delay on this week’s “In The Red Zone” but with the team having been given Monday off plus working on a bye week it was decided to push it back a few days from its usual Tuesday morning run.

First off I hope everyone had a nice holiday season, no matter which ones you and your family and friends celebrate. Also thanks to all the readers of “In The Red Zone”, the weekly game previews and recaps for stopping by each week for my look at the New England Patriots.

Overall the season for New England was a successful one; they finished 13-3 won another division title and clinched the top seed in playoffs securing home field advantage through the conference championship. Now they just need to get there.

As we all remember the most recent Patriots playoff endeavors haven’t been all that good. Since starting 18-0 in 2007 the Patriots are 48-16 in the next 4 regular seasons but 0-3 in playoff and Super Bowl games, with the loses coming at the hands of the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXLII, the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 AFC Wild Card Round and the New York Jets in the AFC Division Round last season.

Since winning his first 10 playoff games, Tom Brady has won 2 NFL MVP Awards but is just 4-5 in the post season. In addition to the above losses are an AFC Conference Championship game loss to Indianapolis in 2006 and a road playoff beat down by Denver in 2005.

New England needs to get back to its winning playoff ways. Brady is a key cog and must play better than he has in some of those previous playoff losses. And the defense needs to be able to hold its own at key moments in the game.

They can’t afford to fall behind like they have the last two weeks and depend on a comeback. It’s time for 60 minutes of solid New England Patriots football, let’s hope they come to play next Saturday night as they make a run at Lombardi Trophy #4 in Indianapolis in February.

New England head coach Bill Belichick now has 190 career wins including playoffs, which are good for 9th all-time. Former Los Angeles Rams, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks head coach Chuck Knox is 8th with 193 wins.

New England finished the season with 13 wins it was the first time they ever earned that win total in a season.

They were 7-1 at The Razor, 6-2 on the road, 5-1 against the AFC East, 0-1 against the AFC North, 1-0 against the AFC South and 4-0 against the AFC West for a 10-2 record vs. the AFC. They finished 3-1 against the NFC East.

New England has won 8 consecutive games after a 2 game losing streak. It is their longest win streak of the season.

Since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, New England is 74-15 at home including the playoffs it is the best record in the NFL in that time period.

The Patriots have lost their last three playoff games. Two at Gillette Stadium (Baltimore and New York Jets) and Super Bowl XLII (New York Giants). Their last post season win was the 2007 AFC Championship game played in Foxboro when they beat San Diego to go to 18-0.

Tom Brady had 3 TD passes to give him 300 TD passes in his career he is now tied with Hall of Fame QB John Elway for 5th place.

Brady has 124 career wins; he is tied with Hall of Fame QB Fran Tarkenton for 5th all-time.

Brady also eclipsed 5,000 passing yards in a season.

WR Wes Welker now has catches in 98 consecutive games including playoffs, 81 as a Patriot. The last time Welker did not have a catch in a game was 12/24/05 as a Dolphin.

TE Rob Gronkowski set a NFL record for most receiving yards in a season by a tight end with 1,327.

TE Aaron Hernandez also eclipsed the 1,000 yards receiving mark possibly making them the most prolific tight end combo in NFL history.

RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis became just the third running back in franchise history with consecutive 10 TD seasons.

DE Mark Anderson had 1 sack on Sunday to give the Patriots two players with 10 or more sacks in a season joining injured team mate Pro Bowler, Andre Carter.

The New England defense sacked the opponents quarterback 40 times in the 16 game season.

CB Sterling Moore was named Pepsi NFL Defensive Rookie of the Week for his 2 INT; 1 TD performance against Buffalo last Sunday.

The Patriots released TE Garrett Mills from the practice squad and signed WR Britt Davis.

New England finished PLUS 17 in turnover differential. The offense gave up 12 INTs and 5 fumbles, while the defense had 23 INTs and 11 fumble recoveries.

In 15 of the 16 games this season the Patriots opened on defense. They won 7 of 16 coin flips and elected to defer each time. Opponents won the coin toss 9 of 16 times and 8 times elected to receive.

The lone game the Patriots opened on offense was Week 3 in Buffalo, a game they lost.

Sterling Effort Moore Than Bills Can Handle

For the second consecutive week it was as if the New England Patriots forgot the game started at 1 p.m. Last week’s shoddy first half led to a 17-0 deficit after 30 minutes. This week they found themselves down 21-0 to the Buffalo Bills after the first 15 minutes.

Then the gun to end the quarter fired and it was if the Patriots were snapped out of their trance and they went on to score 49 unanswered points in what turned out to be a 49-21 rout of their AFC East rival Bills on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

The stench of an early game funk was on everyone, offense and defense, and after Buffalo WR Steve Johnson scored a TD to make it 21-0 it was hanging in the air pretty bad. Then someone asked for a courtesy flush and miraculously the air cleared and the New England juggernaut was geared up.

Offensively Tom Brady had another typical Brady game he was 23 for 35 for 338 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. It was the first pick he threw in 3 games. He also tied Hall of Fame QB John Elway on the all-time TD pass list finishing the season with 300 for his career.

Brady also finished with 39 TD passes on the year and became just the third player to surpass 5,000 yards passing joining former record holder Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino and current record holder Drew Brees of New Orleans. Later in the afternoon Detroit’s Matthew Stafford would join the club as well. Brees and Brady both eclipsed Marino’s mark this season and now stand #1 and #2 in passing yards for a season.

Other offensive mentions include TE Rob Gronkowski who passed New Orleans TE Jimmy Graham, who during his game Sunday, had just surpassed Hall of Fame TE Kellen Winslow Sr. for most receiving yards in a season by a tight end.

Gronk, who also caught the 300th TD pass of Brady’s career, finished with 1,327 yards and earlier this season set the single season record for most receiving TD’s by a tight end. The new record stands at 17 receiving TD’s for tight ends. He also added 1 rushing TD this season.

I also just want to mention there were solid offensive games from TE Aaron Hernandez 7 catches for 138 yards and 1 TD, rookie RB Stevan Ridley 15 carries for 81 yards and RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis who ran for 22 yards on 7 carries and scored twice.

On the other side of the ball we saw the return of S Patrick Chung who made an immediate impact. Chung may be the hardest hitter on the team and when he is on the field bringing the wood his fellow defensive backs seem to step up their play as well. He made his presence know on the Bills first drive when on third down he crushed the receiver 1-yard shy of the first down marker. Too bad it didn’t prevent a fake punt that New England seemed ill prepared for.

This seemingly led to inspired play from LB Jerod Mayo, CB Antwaun Molden, CB Sterling Moore, who had two picks one of which he returned for a 21-yard TD, and CB Devin McCourty.

Maybe with the return of Chung and LB Brandon Spikes the defense will play better and give up fewer yards. As I said before I only concern myself with points allowed but the problem now is that better, playoff caliber, teams with Pro Bowl quarterbacks and more offensive weapons will turn more of those yards allowed into points allowed in the playoffs.

The New England Patriots host their AFC East Rival Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Patriots (12-3) are 6-1 at The Razor, 4-1 against the AFC East and 9-2 in the conference. The Bills (6-9) are 1-6 on the road, 1-4 vs. the AFC East and 4-7 against the conference.

The Line/Prediction

As of Thursday the line on the game from Yahoo! Sports has the Patriots at MINUS 11. The OVER/UNDER is 51.

My Prediction is Patriots 36, Bills, 24. Give the points (Patriots) and take the over. I am 9-5-1 against the spread and 11 of 15 on calling the over/under in 2011.

This is Tom Brady’s 12^th NFL season he is 17-2 vs. the Bills in his career.

Overall Brady is 123-34 as a starting QB and is 14-5 in the playoffs for an overall record of 137-39. Brady is a 6 time Pro Bowl QB; two time NFL MVP and has won 3 Super Bowls while twice being named the games MVP. Buffalo’s all-time record is 364-415-8 they are 14-15 in the post season with their last post season appearance coming in 1999 when they lost to Tennessee in the AFC Wild Card game. They last played for a conference championship in 1993 when they beat Kansas City in the AFC Title game, 30-13. They then went on to lose to Dallas in Super Bowl XXVIII. Ryan Fitzpatrick is 1-3 vs. New England and 18-33-1 in his NFL career with St. Louis, Cincinnati and Buffalo.

Former UConn WR Marcus Easley was placed on season ending IR after Week 1 when it was discovered he has a heart ailment. Buffalo drafted the Stratford CT native in the 4^th round of the 2010 draft.

Former All-Pro LB Shawne Merriman is out for the year he was placed on the IR in late October with an Achilles injury.

On Wednesday the following players did not practice: K Dave Rayner (groin); QB/WR Brad Smith (hamstring); G Kraig Urbik (knee); T Demetrius Bell (knee) and TE Mike Caussin (knee). WR Ruvell Martin (hamstring) was limited and RB Johnny White (concussion) had full participation.

Patriots 2012 Opponents Announced

The NFL has announced the opponents for the New England Patriots 2012 NFL season.

New England Patriots New England will go on the road to face their divisional foes Miami, Buffalo and New York plus have additional road games against the AFC South with Jacksonville and Tennessee as well as the winner of the AFC North, either Baltimore or Pittsburgh. They also have road contests against NFC West foes St. Louis and Seattle, where they will face former head coach Pete Carroll.

In 2012 the Patriots will play host to division rivals New York, Buffalo and Miami as well as AFC South opponents Indianapolis and Houston and the AFC West winner, either Denver or Oakland. NFC West teams making an appearance at “The Razor” in 2012 are Arizona and San Francisco.

Dates and times for all of the 2012 schedule will be announced at a later date.

Tom Brady Named AFC Offensive Player of the Week

Here’s the release from the New England Patriots about QB Tom Brady being named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week:

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced today that Tom Brady has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week by the National Football league for his performance in the Patriots’ 27-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins last Saturday. It is the 20th time in his career and the third time in 2011 that Brady has received the AFC Offensive Player of the Week honor. He earned the honor for his performance in Week 1 and Week 2 of the 2011 season after throwing for 517 yards in the season-opener at Miami followed by a 423-yard performance vs. San Diego.

Brady completed 27 of 46 passes for 304 yards against the Dolphins, including a touchdown pass to WR Deion Branch. Brady also scored on two 1-yard touchdown runs. After falling behind 17-0 at halftime, Brady helped rally the Patriots by completing 20-of-27 passes for 217 yards in the second half and led the Patriots on five straight scoring drives. It was Brady’s 44th career 300-yard game and his career-high 10th 300-yard game of the 2011 season. After throwing for 304 yards against the Dolphins and 4,897 yards through the first 15 games, Brady needs 103 yards in the final game to join Drew Brees (5,087 in 2011 and 5,069 in 2008) and Dan Marino (5,084 in 1984) as the only players to reach 5,000 passing yards in a single season.

It is the sixth Player of the Week honor for the Patriots in 2011. Brady was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week following the first two games of the season at Miami on Sept. 12 and vs. San Diego on Sept. 18, Andre Carter was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week following the win at the Jets on Nov. 13, Julian Edelman was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week following the win vs. Kansas City on Nov. 21, and Rob Gronkowski was named AFC Offensive Player of the week following the win at Washington on Dec. 11.

Brady also was honored as AFC Offensive Player of the Month for November by the National Football League. Brady led New England to a 3-1 record in November, including 300 yard performances in three of the four games. For the month, Brady completed 93 of 149 passes (62.4 percent) for 1,266 yards with 10 touchdowns and a 106.3 passer rating. Brady’s 1,266 passing yards led the NFL for the month and his 10 touchdown passes ranked first in the AFC and tied for second in the NFL in November.

In The Red Zone – 12/27

In The Red Zone

I hope every one had a great holiday, mine sure was better with the win on Saturday over the Miami Dolphins.

I’d say there’s probably one more thing to accomplish for the team in the regular season and that’s to secure the top seed in the conference. That happens with a win on Sunday or a Baltimore loss and a Pittsburgh loss.

After a short week then a game the team now gets an extra day to prepare for the Buffalo Bills who, with the exception of the Week 3 loss earlier this year in Southern Canada, have been New England’s whipping boys for the last 8 seasons.

It’s also the regular season finale and then the team will have two weeks to prepare for its first playoff opponent. They’re hoping this year to get past the first round. As Patriots fans recall the last two seasons have ended with home playoff losses to Baltimore and the New York Jets.

It will be interesting to see how much stock Bill Belichick and the staff put into getting home field advantage through out the playoffs. Does he take the game against the Bills to rest some regulars or does he go all out? I think with a bye week next week you will see an all out effort as being at home where the Patriots play so well is extremely important to playoff success. You don’t want to lay back and get to the Conference Championship only to have to go to Pittsburgh or Baltimore. While those teams are formidable no matter where they play I’m sure New England would rather have the Gillette Stadium crowd behind them in crunch time.

No if the defensive secondary could only hold up through the playoffs this has “Magical Run” written all over it.

Dolphins were 3 for 3 in the red zone and 1 for 1 on goal to go efficiency while the Patriots were 3 for 4 in the red zone and 3 for 3 in goal to go efficiency.

The Patriots tied their season high of five sacks in a game Saturday. (5 at Pittsburgh and 5 at New York Jets).

After not having allowed a 100-yard rusher all season New England has allowed a back to get 100 yards or more in two of the last three weeks.

On Monday the team released S Ross Ventrone from the 53-man roster and DL Cedric McKinley from the practice squad.

Patriots 2nd Half Comeback Keys Win Over Dolphins, 27-24

The first half was ugly.

It was ugly offensively. It was ugly defensively. It was ugly on special teams and coaching. It was so ugly this is all I will say about it.

The second half though was entirely different story as the New England Patriots rallied from 17 points down to defeat the pesky Miami Dolphins 27-24 Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro MA.

Some Patriots players had second half stats that would equal a good full game for most players in the NFL. I just hope heading into the playoffs this team doesn’t think they can turn it on when they need to. With a defense as bad as the one patrolling “The Razor” these days it’s the last thing they need.

They are built to build a lead and hope the prayers of Patriots fan everywhere pull them through to the victory.

The 17-point comeback is so unique in Patriots history in the Belichick/Brady era it was the first time all season they were behind by 17 points. They hadn’t been behind by 17 points since November 7, 2010 when they lost at Cleveland 34-14.

And more so they hadn’t overcome a deficit that large since 2002, that’s 9 years ago. The reason for this is they haven’t been behind by 17 many times in that time period.

The big keys to Saturday’s turnaround was the second half play of QB Tom Brady, who got his balls off of the turf as well as WR Wes Welker and WR Deion Branch who were manhandled by the Miami defenders most of the game finally being able to wiggle free. Rookie RB Stevan Ridley who is quickly becoming a favorite along with TE Aaron Hernandez and TE Rob Gronkowski, who proved once again, they are there when the going gets tough.

Brady actually ran for two TD’s and Branch caught one and K Stephen Gostkowski added a pair of field goals for the scoring.

Defensively DT Vince Wilfork continues to be the man in the middle. He along with LB Jerod Mayo may not be spectacular or pound their chests like players on other teams but in many ways they are better and they show it in the effort.

Just a shout out to Miami WR Brandon Marshall, that dude killed them, especially CB Devin McCourty nearly the entire game. Great game for a great player. He has the skills to be an all-time great and he sure is fun to watch regardless of what uniform he is wearing.

Next Sunday, New Years Day, New England hosts Buffalo in the regular season finale. They then will have a week off because they clinched a bye and they will start the AFC Playoffs the weekend of January 14-15 at home in Gillette Stadium.
