According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox and Japanese pitcher, Daisuke Matsuzaka, are very far apart in their negotiation’s. The Red Sox are offering $7 million a year, while Matsuzaka’s agent, Scott Boras, is looking for $15 million a year. They still have 3 weeks to get the deal done.
Where have we seen this before? If you were thinking last year with Johnny Damon, you are correct. It seems as though the Sox have valued him at the $7 million mark while Bora’s client wants more. The good thing is at least the Sox can’t lose him to the Yankees just yet. They do run that risk though if they are unable to sign him. He would then be returned to the Seibu Lions and probably placed back out to bid at the end of the 2007 Japanese league season.
All I know is the Red Sox better not screw this up. He is the real deal from all accounts. Hopefully both sides can find a happy medium so the fans of Red Sox Nation can see Daisuke in the #18 Red Sox uniform. Ironically, that was Damon’s number when he played in Boston.
