After getting roughed up in his last start, the Boston Red Sox have decided to let Junichi Tazawa finish the season with the GCL Red Sox as he was sent down before tonight’s game. Taking his place on the 25-man roster will be Marcus McBeth.

McBeth will most likely be designated for assignment on Sunday to make room for Paul Byrd on the 40-man and 25-man rosters. Byrd is scheduled to make the start tomorrow afternoon in place of Jon Lester who was bumped to Tuesday due to Tim Wakefield’s back issues again.

Tazawa appeared in five games (four starts) and was 2-3 with a 6.65 ERA. He gave up nine earned runs in just four innings on Thursday night against the Chicago White Sox.

McBeth has been with the Red Sox once this season as he was called up when Justin Masterson was traded to the Cleveland Indians for Victor Martinez. He didn’t appear in the game and was optioned back to Pawtucket after the game.

Tazawa cannot be recalled for ten days unless another pitcher goes on the disabled list or when the Gulf Coast Red Sox end their season which I believe is on August 31st.

And in another move, the Red Sox have acquired Joey Gathright from the Baltimore Orioles for a player to be named later. Gathright will be sent to Pawtucket.
