Boston Red SoxThe deadline to ask for arbitration on free agents is midnight tonight and the Boston Red Sox have decided to offer arbitration to just two of their free agents, Jason Varitek and Paul Byrd.

Varitek is a Type A free agent and Byrd is a Type B free agent. This means that if Varitek declines arbitration and signs elsewhere, the Red Sox will receive two draft picks in the 2009 draft. The same thing goes for Byrd except that if he declines and signs with another team, the Red Sox will receive a supplemental first round pick in the draft.

Both players have until December 7th to accept the offer of arbitration from the Red Sox. It is expected that both players will not accept it.
