The Boston Red Sox 25-man roster is getting closer to completion as they announced some roster moves this afternoon.
The Red Sox have optioned Clay Buchholz to Triple-A Pawtucket, leaving him with just one minor league option. They have also placed five players on the disabled list. They are:
- John Smoltz, retroactive to March 27 with right shoulder surgery
- Mark Kotsay, retroactive to March 27 with back surgery
- Julio Lugo, retroactive to March 27 with right knee surgery
- Jonathan Van Every, retroactive to March 27 with right ankle sprain
- Miguel Gonzalez, retroactive to March 27 with Tommy John surgery
Kotsay is expected to be back by May 1st while Smoltz should make his Red Sox debut in early June. Lugo will be out until mid-April and Van Every will be optioned to Pawtucket when he returns from the disabled list around April 19th which is the PawSox home opener. Gonzalez is out for the year.
Nick Green will be added to the 40-man roster by Monday and will take the place of Julio Lugo while Chris Carter will take Kotsay’s spot on the roster.
