The trade talks between the Rockies and the Red Sox have a hit a little snag right now. The Red Sox have offered up Mike Lowell and Julian Tavarez to the Rockies in exchange for Todd Helton and cash. Right now, the Rockies also want one of the Red Sox younger prospects from the group Jacob Ellsbury, Craig Hansen, Manny Delcarmen, Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard and Jon Lester.
I am pretty sure that Daniel Bard can’t be traded since he was just drafted and signed last year. However that being said, I still think the Red Sox should part with ONE of them, but preferably not one of the starting pitching prospects. Currently, the Red Sox have 6 arms competing for 5 spots. The reason why I don’t think the Sox should trade a starter is because Wakefield and Schilling are approaching the end of their careers and will probably need to be replaced for the 2008 season.
Of course then again, trading anyone that is a bullpen prospect could be detriemental too because right now our bullpen isn’t exactly one of the best right now. I also wouldn’t trade Ellsbury either. So who would I trade. Honestly, I don’t know. If it came down to it, I would probably trade Delcarmen. Hansen is the “future closer” of the Red Sox, and they have Bryce Cox who could step up into Delcarmen’s role.
Money wise this deal could make sense for the Red Sox especially if the Rockies are going to pay half of what Helton is owed. A Gold Glove first baseman for around $10 million a year. Why not? Lowell is a free agent after the season and Tavarez is too. However, Tavarez has an option for 2008 based on how many appearances he makes in 2007.
The Red Sox are usually quiet in the media when it comes to trades or anything that has to do with the front office. So it will be interesting too see what transpires over the next few days. Helton has publicly said that he would like the trade to get done quickly. And as pointed out the other day, Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd is away til Tuesday tending to a family matter.
I wonder if I should call the Director of Player Development from the Rockies, Marc Gustafson, to see if I can get any scoop. He always told me if I ever needed anything to give him a call.
