It was first reported yesterday that UConn Huskies sophomore Michala Johnson would be leaving the UConn Huskies women’s basketball program to transfer somewhere closer to home. And now on Wednesday, it’s official.

Here’s the release from UConn:

STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore forward Michala Johnson has informed head women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma of her intention to transfer from the University of Connecticut.

UConn's Michala Johnson takes the ball to the basket against Fairfield's Taryn Johnson “I have really enjoyed getting to know Michala over the last two years,” Auriemma said. “She is a great kid who works really hard in the classroom and on the court. Recently, she came to us and expressed an interest in being closer to home and I can respect that. I wish Michala nothing but the best in the future.”

Johnson will complete the spring academic semester at UConn.

Johnson, a native of Bellwood, Ill., saw time in 56 games during her two years at UConn. She averaged 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 5.1 minutes per game.
