On Monday, there was report that Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek was going to exercise his player option after the Red Sox had declined their team option.
Although the article stated he was going to exercise his player option, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein and his agent, Scott Boras, stated that they didn’t know his intentions.
But on Wednesday, Varitek made it official that he’ll be returning to the Red Sox.
“We’re happy to have Jason back and we look forward to a good year from him in 2010,” Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. “He means an awful lot to the organization on and off the field. He helps solidify our catching position also and is a big asset to the pitching staff.
He’ll have a different role in 2010 as Victor Martinez will be the Red Sox everyday catcher.
