He’s got the same last name as the famous bloodline of Molina catchers. Unfortunately, he’s not related to any of them.
The Boston Red Sox have signed free agent catcher Gustavo Molina to a minor league deal for the 2010 season. He was also invited to spring training as a non-roster invitee.
Molina spent the 2009 season with the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs, an affiliate of the Washington Nationals. In 72 games, he hit .209 with two home runs and 24 RBIs.
He’s appeared in 17 big league games with three different teams, the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets. His last big league appearance came in 2008 as a member of the Mets.
