The revolving door in the Boston Red Sox continues this afternoon as the Boston Red Sox announced they have called up Pawtucket Red Sox closer Fernando Cabrera. To make room on the 25-man and 40-man rosters, they have designated pitcher Enrique Gonzalez for assignment.
In 38 games with the PawSox, Cabrera has an 0-3 record with 20 saves and an 1.69 ERA. He last pitched in the big leagues with the Baltimore Orioles in 2008, where he compiled a 2-1 record with a 5.40 ERA. He has also spent time in the big leagues with the Cleveland Indians.
Gonzalez made his Red Sox debut in yesterday’s loss when Ramon Ramirez was ejected for hitting Alex Rodriguez. He allowed 2 runs in 1 2/3 innings.
