While it’s been an emotional time this weekend for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and to a lesser degree, the Boston Red Sox, the game of baseball has gone on.
Yesterday the Red Sox finally showed some signs of life at the plate as Jason Bay smacked two home runs and Mike Lowell added one as well. They also got a decent outing from Brad Penny who was making his debut in a Red Sox uniform.
Speaking of debuts, the Red Sox also wore their new gray road uniforms for the first time. Personally, I liked them. They had that old time feel to them.
Jed Lowrie’s struggles continue at the plate as he now 1-for-18 (.056). The tribulations at the plate aren’t effecting his game on the field though. Lowrie did hit .343 during spring training but as we all know, spring training numbers don’t mean squat. By the way, does anyone remember a certain Red Sox second baseman who had a rough April before going on to win the AL Rookie of the Year in 2007 and the AL MVP in 2008?
“It almost never fails, but the guy that’s swinging the bat the best in spring training [struggles early in the season],” Francona said. “He hit that last ball [Friday night] real good, which is good to see. He’s actually had pretty good at-bats. He’s gotten in deep counts.”
