Way back at the beginning of Red Sox spring training, everybody’s eyes were focused on Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka and no one had their sights on the other Japanese player the Sox had signed, Hideki Okajima. Okajima didn’t seem to mind this at all and even came out and said “I’m willing to be a hero in the dark.”
A fellow blogger, Peter from Peter’s Red Sox Forever, came up with the idea of a nickname for Okajima, “Darkman”. He sent me an email asking me to help him try and get the name to stick. So when I write about Okajima, I always try to use “Darkman” in Okajima’s name. A week or so ago, Peter received an email from Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe about Peter’s idea of the “Darkman” nickname. So now I am trying to do my part a little more and give you this illustration.
