Not even “Touchdown Jesus” could have saved the Notre Dame Fighting Irish against the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team on Tuesday night in Nashville, TN.
The Fighting Irish were supposed to be the team that was going to challenge the Huskies and prevent them from winning a record 9th NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship.
UConn got out of the gates like a thoroughbred in both halves and went on to a relatively easy 78-59 win over Notre Dame to win the 2014 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship.
The Huskies finish their season at a school-record and NCAA-tying record of 40-0. It’s also the second straight championship for them. The Fighting Irish finish at 37-1.
Tournament Most Outstanding Player Breanna Stewart led the way for UConn with 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 18 rebounds and seven rebounds.
Stefanie Dolson had a monster game in her final one as a member of the UConn women’s basketball team with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Bria Hartley had 13 points in her final game as well.
Kayla McBride led the Irish with 21 points and had five rebounds. Jewell Loyd added 13 points and a team-high six rebounds. Michaela Mabrey chipped in with 10 points.
