Arkeel Newsome

UConn RB #22 Arkeel Newsome looks up field after catching a screen pass on September 27, 2014 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. Newsome would take it 74 yards for a touchdown.

When the season started for the UConn Huskies football team, Ansonia, CT native Arkeel Newsome wasn’t even on the two-deep depth chart. But as the season has gone on, he’s worked his way into the rotation not only at running back but also as the primary kick returner.

And as we go forward through the final seven games, we can expect to see more of Newsome as well as Ron Johnson according to UConn head coach Bob Diaco.

“You are going to see Arkeel and Ron Johnson a lot more,” Diaco said on Tuesday. “Arkeel and Ron still don’t know in great detail the protections and different things. There’s still some growing that needs to happen with those guys. We can help manage that a bit for them.”

In the loss against Temple, Newsome finally got a chance to show what he could do when he caught a screen pass from Chandler Whitmer and took it to the house for a 74 yard touchdown pass.

Watch and listen below as Diaco talks about the speed of Newsome.
