SOX & Dawgs - Tidbits From the College Gridiron

Things aren’t looking good for Notre Dame as they were shutout 38-0 by Michigan to fall to 0-3. And things got worse as backup quarterback Demetrius Jones didn’t show up for the bus on Friday. The reason he didn’t show up is he decided to transfer to Northern Illinois. He cited comments from Charlie Weis about Jimmy Clausen being the top QB throughout spring practice and into the start of the season. Clausen wasn’t named the starter for the season opener because of elbow surgery to remove bone chips.

The University of Kentucky was fined $25,000 by the SEC because they violated the league’s policy about fans rushing the field. The Kentucky faithful rushed the field after the Wildcats beat their in-state rivals, the Louisville Cardinals 40-34.

Arkansas defensive tackle Ernest Mitchell was thrown out of Saturday’s game against Alabama for grabbing a ‘Bama player’s helmet and hitting him with it. Well, he was suspended by head coach Houston Nutt for one game for his actions in the game.

The Gamecocks of South Carolina have lost one of their defensive starters, Nathan Pepper, to an ACL injury. He suffered it in the team’s 38-3 win over South Carolina State. He will miss the rest of the regular season.

Gamecocks starting safety Emanuel Cook is due in court January 24th of next year to face gun charges after he was arrested on August 24th. He had been suspended from the team and the school but was reinstated. He then underwent an emergency appendectomy before the start of the season and recovered to regain his starting spot this past Saturday.

The Miami Hurricanes were not so surprised to hear that Texas A&M player Martellus Bennett honored former Hurricane and injured Buffalo Bills player Kevin Everett by wearing Everett’s #85 in the Aggies game on Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe. Bennett had been recruited by the U but scorned them for the Aggies. The two teams will meet up this Thursday night at the Orange Bowl.

If you’re a Temple Owls football fan (come on, I know there’s millions of you out there), you have every right to be upset with the call at the end of the game against UCONN on Saturday, ruling the receiver out of bounds even though it appears he was inbounds. I have seen so many angles that I thought he was out on Sunday and then today I thought he was in. Here’s a look at the video courtesy of Awful Announcing.
