There must be something in the water in Ireland as it appears former UConn Huskies women’s basketball player Mel Thomas has taken a liking to basketball in Ireland.
In just her second professional game for the Bausch & Lomb Waterford Wildcats, she led all scorers with 32 points to help her team to a 86-72 win over Leisureworld Churchfield Iona.
Bausch & Lomb Wildcats led from start to finish in tonight’s game against the newly promoted Cork side, Leisureworld Churchfield Iona. That doesn’t tell the story of the game though, as the home side had to work hard for their victory and could only afford to relax with three or four minutes left on the clock. Mel Thomas and Michelle Aspell again combined to make life tough for the opposition with Thomas scoring 32 and Aspell adding 19. Jillian Hayes played a huge part in tonight’s win also. Her presence and experience under the basket and her 12 points contribution were telling. Cathy Kavanagh continues to improve with every outing while Kristin Zompetti, Jenny Coady and Christine O’Gorman all played important parts in the victory.
In two games with the Wildcats, Mel has now scored 65 points and her team has won both games. On the season, Waterford is 3-1.
Mel and the Wildcats are back in action next Saturday when they venture out to take on UL Aughinish at 7:45 PM local time in Ireland.
Keep it going Mel. We’re all rooting for you back here in the states.
And don’t forget, you can check out her website, MelThomas.com, where you will be able to purchase her new book “Heart of A Husky” in the near future. More details on that when they become available.
