Jonathan Papelbon’s Comments Creating A Buzz

** FILE ** This is a March 8, 2009 file photo showing Los Angeles Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez tossing his helmet after batting practice before a spring training baseball game against the Chicago White Sox in Phoenix. Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon compared former teammate Manny Ramirez to cancer, saying Boston made the right decision when it traded the slugging left fielder to the Los Angeles Dodgers last summer. "He was on a different train! And you saw what happened with that. We got rid of him, and we moved on without him," Papelbon was quoted in the April issue of Esquire. The story was posted on the magazine's Web site Thursday March 12, 2009. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson, File)

The internets have been going a little crazy today with the comments Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon made in the April edition of Esquire magazine about former Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez.

“The beautiful thing about our team is, we don’t let anybody get above the team. He wasn’t on the same train as the rest of us.” And here Papelbon starts banging his kitchen table for emphasis, the punctuation marks in his sentences changing: “He was on a different train! And you saw what happened with that. We got rid of him, and we moved on without him. That comes from the manager, and it comes from guys like Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield and David Ortiz. Nobody is ever going to be allowed to do that. Even a guy like me, just heading into my fourth year in the big leagues — if David Ortiz gets a little, you know — I’ll tell him what’s up! I’m not afraid to do that. I’m not afraid to put him in his place, because I think everybody needs that. And if somebody does it to me, I understand that. I most certainly understand that. Varitek tells me all the time, ‘Just shut up. Do what you’re supposed to do.’ So Manny was tough for us. You have somebody like him, you know at any point in the ball game, he can dictate the outcome of the game. And for him not to be on the same page as the rest of the team was a killer, man! It just takes one guy to bring an entire team down, and that’s exactly what was happening. Once we saw that, we weren’t afraid to get rid of him. It’s like cancer. That’s what he was. Cancer. He had to go. It sucked, but that was the only scenario that was going to work. That was it for us. And after, you could feel it in the air in the clubhouse. We got Jason Bay — Johnny Ballgame, plays the game right, plays through broken knees, runs out every ground ball — and it was like a breath of fresh air, man! Awesome! No question.”

I think we as Red Sox fans all saw the difference in the team when Manny was finally traded away. They had finally looked like they were enjoying the game again.

Update: Papelbon sent a text to Comcast SportsNet and said he won’t be taking back his statement.

“That old news story was 4 months ago. I’m not saying anything else, but I’m also not taking back anything I have said already.” – Jonathan Papelbon

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 3/12

Kevin Youkilis #21 of the USA reacts after he flied out to end the inning during the 2009 World Baseball Classic Pool C match at the Rogers Centre March 11, 2009 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Venezuela defeated the USA 5-3. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

My apologies for the lack of posts yesterday. I had to head down to where I used to live take care of some odds and ends. But I’m back today and ready to go.

The Boston Red Sox enjoyed a day off yesterday from Grapefruit League action  and today they head across the state to Jupiter to take on the St. Louis Cardinals. There is no television coverage and the only radio coverage will be on KTRS 550-AM in St. Louis.

Some of the players from the Red Sox participating in the World Baseball Classic were in action yesterday.

Dustin Pedroia (0-for-5) and Kevin Youkilis (0-for-4) were held hitless in Team USA’s 5-3 loss to Venezuela. Both squads do advance to the 2nd round in Miami where Team USA will play Puerto Rico on Saturday. Speaking of Puerto Rico, Javier Lopez pitched an inning of one hit ball in their 5-0 win over The Netherlands. Sox farm hand Mitch Dening and his Australian squad were eliminated by Mexico 16-1. Dening went 0-for-1 in the game.

Before today’s games, Rob over at The Bottom Line took a look at the stats of the Red Sox players participating in the WBC. Here are the links to the hitters stats and pitchers stats. Be sure to check them out.

Machida To Replace Rampage At UFC 98

Lyoto Machida (L), Rampage Jackson (C), Rashad Evans (R)

You may have noticed the presence of a few MMA posts over the course of the past few months as it’s been something that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching.

After beating Keith Jardine on Saturday night in UFC 96, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was seen verbally jarring with “Sugar” Rashad Evans about getting his belt back. Now Rampage is backing out of a title chance in UFC 98 as he has injuries to his jaw and hand.

This now opens up a chance for one the top contenders in the light heavyweight division in Lyoto Machida as he will take on Evans in UFC 98 on May 23rd. In his last bout, Machida knocked out Thiago Silva with a vicious punch.

It should be an interesting match as both fighters are undefeated and feature different fighting styles. Rumor is that Rampage will get the winner of this bout.

Heat Use Big Run To Get Past Injury Depleted Celtics

Boston Celtics: The Miami Heat used a 16-4 run in the third quarter and then held off the injury depleted Boston Celtics to win 107-99 in Miami. It’s the second straight loss for the Celtics. Dwyane Wade continued his great run over the past few games by hitting a three pointer to ensure a Heat win. Wade finished with 32 points and 7 assists while Jamario Moon had 13 points. Ray Allen led the Celtics with 27 points and Leon Powe had a great game with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Paul Pierce chipped in with 16 points. The Celtics return home to take on former UConn Husky Rudy Gay and the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. [ESPN.com]

Introducing The A-Roid Cocktail

I can tell you one thing, when I head to a Boston Red Sox game this season, I will definitely be checking this out.

The fine folks at Bonfire, located in the Boston Park Plaza Hotel, have come up with a new drink for the 2009 season as part of their Red Sox menu. It celebrates Alex Rodriguez and his use of steroids.

It’s my pleasure to introduce to you, The A-Roid:

The ARoid at Bonfire

The A-Roid starts with a shot of El Mejor Tequila, served straight up. To give the shot a little something extra; a spicy smoky splash is served on the side in a convenient syringe…minus the needle. Inject the Performance-Enhancing Boost of Spicy Tomato “Juice” right into the shot or use it as a chaser. However you use it, come clean and acknowledge it…don’t deny it.

Enjoy The A-Roid ($11) with any of Bonfire’s new Red Sox inspired menu items. Available on opening day, April 6th, served throughout the Red Sox season.

  • Shot: El Mejor Tequila (Silver, Reposado, Anejo)
  • Performance-Enhancing Boost of Spicy Tomato “Juice”: Bonfire’s House Smoked Tomatoes, Tomato juice, Lemon juice, Tabasco sauce, Jalapeños

At $11, ARod may be the only one able to afford the cocktail in this economy. Great idea though by Bonfire. Why not exploit ARod’s faults with the perfect drink. Yuri Sucart not included.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 3/11

Boston Red Sox Mike Lowell connects for a single against the Baltimore Orioles during the seventh inning of their spring training baseball game in Fort Myers, Fla., Tuesday March 10, 2009. Lowell, who had hip surgery in the off season, had one hit in his first game back this season. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

Although the Boston Red Sox lost to the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon, the news wasn’t all bad as Mike Lowell made his first appearance in a game and Clay Buchholz threw the ball well again.

For Lowell, it was his first at-bats in a game since the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays. Lowell was originally supposed to get two AB’s in the game but ended up getting a third and lacing a single to finish 1-for-3 with a strikeout and a popout.

Buchholz continued his domination of the Orioles and his excellent spring training as he threw three perfect innings, striking out two in the process. Jonathan Papelbon followed him with an inning of one-hit ball and Daniel Bard finally allowed his first hit of the spring in his inning of work.  Kris Johnson took the loss for the Sox, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk in 2 innings of work. Felix Doubront gave up 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 1 in an inning.

Jed Lowrie put aside his fielding problems from Monday and went 2-for-2 with a triple. He was thrown out trying to stretch the triple into an inside-the-park home run. Rocco Baldelli added the only RBI for the Sox going 1-for-3. Jacoby Ellsbury had the other hit for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox also made two more moves after the game as they reassigned pitchers Dustin Richardson and Kris Johnson to the minor league development complex. That brings the total players sent down yesterday to 5.

The Red Sox get the day off from games on Wednesday and will be back in action on Thursday afternoon when they head across the state to Jupiter to take on the St. Louis Cardinals. There is no television coverage and the only radio coverage will be on KTRS 550-AM in St. Louis.

Patriots Sign Bodden and Hodel

Leigh Bodden and Nathan Hodel: One of the offseason concerns for the New England Patriots was to revamp their defensive secondary. On Monday, they signed another piece of the puzzle as they agreed to terms with free agent cornerback Leigh Bodden, who had been recently released by the Detroit Lions. Bodden also has played in Cleveland under former Patriots assistant coach Romeo Crennel. [Reiss’ Pieces] With Lonnie Paxton taking off with Josh McDaniels, the Patriots needed a new long snapper. Well now they won’t have to worry about that as they have signed free agent long snapper Nathan Hodel who had previously played for the Super Bowl runnerup Arizona Cardinals. [Reiss’ Pieces]
